Gents,
As my FOW armies are nearing completion, at least the purchasing of them! I'm looking at sorting my Caesarean Romans out for use in FOG. Apart from my Legionaries, some armoured some not (The armoured ones will count as veterans I believe) and are a straight forward conversion, could someone confirm the basing and possible the class of the following

Peltasts - These can either count as Peltasts or Thracian foot, in DBM the first are Reg Ax(S) whilst the 2nd are Irr Ax(S)

Spanish Cavalry - Again in DBM they count as Irr Cv(O)

Also the DBM list does not differentiate between Gallic, German, Spanish, Italian or Macedonian Cavalry, does FOG
The same question for Numidian, Spanish, Thracian, Illyrian or Kappadokian Cavalry, which in DBM are Irr LH(O)

Finally is there much point in taking Bolt Shooters in FOG

Colin,

I have just stated putting together my Caesarean Romans for FoG and wondered about how the rules deal with the Armoured/unarmoured legionaries.

I was also unsure about basing of the other infantry.

I think Martin seems the best person to ask or go onto the FoG Furum that seems very good.

Regards,

Ralph

The late period peltasts with spear and javelins, aka thureophoroi, in FOG count as MF protected drilled average offensive spear, with the option to be heavy foot, at the same cost. If they don chainmail shirts they become thorakitoi, which makes them armoured. The unarmoured guys run at 8pts, the armoured at 10pts.

Thracians of the period when they are Roman allies count as MF protected undrilled average heavy weapon, at 7pts a throw.

Both the above are useful in a FOG Roman army as they are not penalised in any way in uneven or rough terrain and only suffer sligtly in difficult stuff like forests!

Caesar's cavalry, be it Gallic, Spanish or German can count as armoured superior undrilled light spear swordsman, though it can downgrade to protected and average.

The legionaries are armoured, by and large, what with mail and other styles and a huge shield. They can be any level of quality, but by and large will be superor skilled swordsmen...the business!

Does that mean the cavalry are mounted two to a base then? Are then any options for heavy cavalry? or even slightly heavy cavalry (straws grasping comes to mind)

The cavalry counts as heavy so gets mounted three to a base, it's only light horse that goes two to a base, like Moors or Numidians, maybe some Spaniards.

Having said that, because some 28mm figs are so large and also possibly to save money/painting time, some people do one per base for LH, two per base for Cav and only three per base for Cataphracts!
