After my latest purchases at the weekend (including FOG Rise of Rome) I can now put my Romans into a formed list as shown below

C-C Inspired Commander 80pts

Sub-Commander Field Commander 50pts

Legionaries 1st Battle Group - Veterans (8 Bases) 136pts
2nd Battle Group - Legionaries (8 Bases) 112pts
3rd Battle Group - Legionaries (6 Bases) 84pts

Javelinmen 1st Battlegroup (7 bases) 28pts

Heavy Cavalry 1st Battlegroup - Armoured Superior (2 Bases) 32pts

Cretan Archers 1st Battlegroup (6 Bases) 36pts

Thracian Foot 1st Battlegroup (6 Bases) 42pts

Total 600pts

So gents what I need to know is how many points should I be aiming at? Obviously another General, more legionaries (can't have to many legionaries) and some more cavalry are in order.

The absolute max points you'll ever need is 1000. That size needs 4 generals and I;ve noticed most players have an allied contingent in such an army size. I don't think you can have too many legionaries and I would go for the max no of superiors in bgs of 4 or 6 and the rest as average in 6s and 8s. Another MF BG would be good, and 2 x 4 BGs of horse.

I look forward to crossing swords with them, well, I think on my part it will be pikes!

After last nights lesson I have been thinking about my list and have come with version 2 below. The question I ask myself is, are two Troop Commanders enough? do I need a 3rd and if so where does he come from.

Any way the list is as follows

C-C - Field Commander - 35pts
Sub-commander - 35pts

1st Legionary BG - 6 bases - Superior - 84pts *
2nd Legionary BG - 6 bases - Superior - 84pts *
3rd Legionary BG - 6 bases - Superior - 84pts
4th Legionary BG - 6 bases - Average - 60pts
5th Legionary BG - 6 bases - Average - 60pts
Javelinmen BG - 6 bases - 24pts *
1st Heavy Cavalry - 4 bases - Protected Average - 36pts *
2nd Heavy Cavalry - 4 bases - Protected Average - 36pts
Fortified Camp - 24pts *
Spanish Scutarii - Impact Foot, Swordsmen - 42pts
Thracian Foot - Heavy weapon - 42pts

The ones asterixed are compulsary, for most of last night only 4 out of 6 javelinmen were any use, the other two bases never seemed to be able to get a shot in! but have no points to increase them and 6 bases is the minimum size. The cavalry are as cheep/poor as they can get but hopefully still effective, the Spanish Impact foot should make them a handfull, not sure about the Thracian Foot, not used Heavy weapons before might replace them with Illyrians making them Offensive spearmen with not change in points.

So what do you think, what if anything should be changed?
