hm... I've been thinking about how Rei-chan's name is spelled. We're used to seeing it spelled as "Rei" in subtitles, but is that way really the "correct" way?
The reason I'm even bringing this up is because of how Rei's name is written in Japanese. Naoko-sensei used Katakana rather than Hiragana or Kanji. As some of you may know, Katakana is used for pronunciation of names or words not used by the Japanese (e.g. フレイ=Frey).

レイ is how Rei's name is written. Because it's in Katakana, wouldn't the proper spelling be "Raye", as it was in the English dub or "Ray"?

This has been bugging me for a while, so I just wanted to hear everyone else's thoughts about this.

Rei is a japanese name. The Japanese use katakana to write out the sounds of foreign words and to emphasis on japanese words. Once, I seen kirei written in katakana. If they wrote it as raye or ray, they wouldn't be able to pronounce it.

It was her name of Ray, like Amuro Ray. Or Rai or somethings like that...

But Ray, or even her real name is Rei??

If it were literally spelled Raye, the Japanese would probably pronounce it "Rah-yay", and not "Ray-ee" like Rei is pronounced.

I read somewhere (The Sailor Moon Oracle, I think) that Rei's ƒŒƒC name was spelled in Katakana instead of hiragana, to make it more exotic and adding to her colorful personality. But it is a traditional japanese name, and I think it's meant to be seen that way.
