I have been given command of the newly commissioned Type IXB U-712. We have been ordered to leave Wilhelmshaven by 1700 hours. We are to head out of port and head towards the British northern coastline. We will receive more orders in route. All commutations will now go thru the newly installed Enigma Machines.

All supplies have been stored, munitions loaded, and the crew is standing by. The Boat has been cleared for sea.

The German attack on Poland has now been going on for two days and Britain and France haven’t yet honored their promises. Can it be that Chamberlain and Bonnet are going to try to sneak out of them?

The British demand that German withdraw all her troops out of Poland. If German does not withdraw, Britain and France will come to that ad of Poland. For this reason, the U-boat fleet is being sent out to watch the English coast.

As we continue towards the English coast to wait for further orders from BdU. Today we received orders to make best speed to map grid AM33, and stand by for further orders.

It is still a very odd feeling, as I look out over the deck of the U-712. The sea is calm, and the spray of the sea over the bow is cool and feels good against the face. There is a slight wind which as just a hint that fall is coming. The sun has just come up over the horizon. Yet behind us there is war. People are fighting and dieing. Looking out over the sea, I am still not sure I grasp it all…We are at War.
