Cynder's bright hair whipped at her face as she took a seat at "America's Drive in". She attempted to push her hair out of her face, but it was no use as the wind just kept blowing. Contemplating on what to order, she started scraping some of the dirt out from under her fingernails. Finally, she pressed the red button. "Welcome to Sonic. What can I get you?" "I'll just have a strawberry peach slushie." she replied. When the woman responded with the price, it was too staticy to understand. She pulled a five dollar bill from her pocket, figuring that would cover it. Waiting, Cynder started to think about her old home in Texas. She and her friends would go to sonic almost everyday for Strawberry Peach slushies. She sighed, missing them. Cynder was sure she'd never make any friends in this town. But that was fine with her, she liked being a loner, and generally didn't want to let anyone know her well enough to be her friend anyways. "Ma'am?" a woman wearing a sonic uniform broke her thoughts. "Your slush.." she continued. "Oh, right. here ya go. Keep the change.." Cynder handed her the five dollar bill as the woman gave her the slush. Biting the straw as she sucked the sweet flavor up, she continued missing Texas.

It hadn't even been half way into Chris' summer vacation and he could tell it was going to be a long one. Boredom was never anything Chris could deal with well, he rarely experienced it. So when it did descend on him, it pissed him the hell off. He felt like he was doomed to wander aimlessly till the fall

But he was optimistic today would be a good one. He'd gotten his mother's mnthly guilt money and was certain one brash expense would lighten his mood for at least a few days. But before he did anything he needed a slushie an ad had advised him, to prevent him from melting in the heat.

He had waited idly behind a red head, half watching her who had seemed just as distracted in her thoughts as he had been, though she probably had more on her mind than in a fight between a one legged cat and a half blind badger, who would emerge victorious. Yes he was sure of it because she was insisting that the cashier who had taken her time with her order keep the change. Chris couldn't stand for that...

"What she really means is, she wants another peach slushie for her good friend Chris," He chimed in as money was exchanging hands. Well if she was gonna waste money, why no do so on him?

Cynder was caught by surprise when she heard his voice. She jumped a little, but then decided to play it cool and nodded to the cashier when she looked from the attractive guy to her, as if asking if she really should go get another slush. When the woman walked off, she turned her head and just stared for a moment. Then, she couldn't help but give a smart remark. "Glad we're such good friends, *scoff* Chris." But she couldn't help but smile, just a little.

He gave a sly wave as the lady disappeared into the back room to spit in his drink for cheating her out of cigarettes then turned to survey the girl who had saved him from shrivelling up in the heat. He, being partial to anything bright, automatically fell in love with her vibrant red hair.

"I'm glad you concur that we are in fact good friends so you don't mind if I...yoink!" he playfully took her cup away from her and took a long sip. "Was that too far? It was wasn't it? We're not that close yet are we?" He frowned but took another sip casually anyway. He handed it back to her. That scar could mean that he shouldn't mess with her. "Sorry, I don't know what peach strawberry slushies tasted like," He explained. "You got a name good friend?" He asked, assuming they still were and she didn't feel the urge to fly kick him. Even if she did think he was a weirdo, he was still claiming his drink.

Acting as if she hadn't seen the wave, she just giggled when he stole her slush and started to ramble. At first she wanted to get up and punch him in the face, but Cynder was feeling rather gentle today. Instead she replied, "nah it's not too far if you don't mind the straw being all chewed on." She paused for a moment and looked up at him, "Cynder's my name, but uh, my friends used to call me Cyn." She kept her eyes locked on him for another second, then continued to scrape and bite at her nails.

Despite being a colour that hardly exuded manliness, the slushie was good enough for him to not have to start an argument in attempts to get a blueberry one instead. He was going to make a comment on the mangled straw but it seemed as a no good thief, he couldn't really complain if things weren't to his standard.

He involuntary raised an eyebrow at her name. She was bullshitting him right? "Cynders? That's a weird name..." He said, then was quiet for a second while he contemplated. "I like it," He said with a warm smile and held out his hand for a more formal introduction. His drink arrived and he beamed with the thought of refreshment at last. He held his hand out expectantly for change to which the lady frowned irritably and began to count out.

"Thanks Cyn," he said as he pressed his drink to his forehead before having a sip. He handed her the change. "I'd offer to buy you a drink later as thanks I know that its demeaning to girls to have their drinks bought right? GIrl power and all that crap," He grinned devilishly.

"I guess weird is just my style," she more so said to herself than to Chris when he mentioned the oddity of her name. Even though his smile was tender, she scowled at his hand when he pushed it towards her. Cynder watched as the irritated sonic lady gave change for the extra slush she bought.

She smiled at the fact of him thanking her, but the use of her old nickname stung somewhere deep inside her, so her smile faded quickly. "sure thing, man." Taking in the statement about girl power, she remembered her mother, so independent and strong. After a moment of contemplating about her, she responded. "Yeah, all that traditional guy-pays-as-if-the-girl-shouldn't-have-to-because-she's-a-snooty-whore kinda thing is retarded." She grinned back at a smile that flashed across his face, and this time the smile didn't fade so quickly.

Cynder didn't strike Chris as particularly strange but it would be rude to accuse her of being a liar after only just meeting her. He had to stop being so impatient, maybe if he gave her two minutes, she'd exhibit some behaviour worthy of the title strange. And she didn't disappoint. The way she recoiled away from his simple act of pretty standard politeness. Its not like he went to stick his tongue down her throat, though still that didn't warrant that sort of reaction in his book, he was too pretty for that.

He nodded along whole heartedly. "It wouldn't be a proper thank you anyway if I did buy you a drink seeing as it would be my mum paying, kinda ruins the sentiment, I feel," He grinned.

Though she had no particular reason, Cynder always felt the need to fiddle with her fingers or bite/clean her nails. She usually had to be doing something with her hands. It was odd but it had always been that way.

"Well, Yeah. That does kind of take the whole point out of it I guess," she replied. But Cynder's mind wondered back to her mother, and how much she missed her, starting to involuntarily play with her fingers. She wondered how long it would be before she could go home. And if her mother would call her like she promised.

"Maybe I can repay your kindness another way?" He suggested then smacked his hand to his forehead. "... I didn't mean it like that," He chuckled. For once he hadn't meant to make a sexual innuendo and yet it had snuck out anyway.

"You new around here? I haven't seen you around," Not that Chris was particularly observant but it was a small town, faces got familiar quickly. "I could show you around or something."

Cynders left brow shot up when she heard the suggestion, though she wasn't really offended. She began laughing in her head.

"Yeah, well, I just moved over from Texas. We were having some family issues, I guess you could say." Even though it was far more than 'family issues', Cynder didn't really feel up to talking about it. "You don't really have to repay me, but I really don't know where anything is.." what am I getting myself into? She thought, then she smiled, not really caring what she was getting into. Honestly, Cynder was always the type to "get into things". She was always in trouble and it never stopped her.

He looked at her inquisitively. "Must be pretty bad family issues to make you pack up and leave," He said sympathetically. "Like my mum left my dad for a little bit because he decided that he could no longer hide his fetish for dressing up like a school girl and get hit with a paddle. Like he got outfits and weird videos and stuff. So she moved up the road because she was so disgusted but only for 3 weeks because she invested too much into the garden to let his sick fantasies drive her out," He shared with an amused glint in his eye. "You don't have to share what made you leave by the way I just love telling that story."

"That's got to be the strangest thing I've ever heard," she commented, deciding not to drag on the topic of her family "issues". Even though she looked like a total bad ass with no feelings, it was a sensitive subject. Cynder wasn't sure if she should sympathize or laugh, so she just smiled as warmly as she could, hoping her smile didn't reflect the way she felt.

He could see the repressed glint in her eyes. "You can laugh, I wouldn't told you all of that if it cut me up inside," He snickered. Anything his dad did that was unsavoury had to be laughed at by as many people as possible, it was an unwritten rule in Chris' world.

He took the lid off his drink and drank the rest of his slushie down. His impatience was rewarded with the mother of all brainfreezes. He groaned but shook it off. "Erm so anywhere you wanna go first?"

Cynder let out a small giggle. She couldn't really laugh when she had so much going on in her mind. Then she felt angry with herself. Suck it up, Cynder, she thought to herself.

"Hmmm..." she thought for a moment. "There's nowhere in particular I want to go," She said. Since she didn't even want to be here in the first place, she could care less where they went first, or second, or third...
