Prologue
The sky was a deep blue, in sharp contrast to the red battlefield below. Bodies covered in armor were laid on the ground. Weapons were scattered across the land. There was not a living breath among them.
A single man wandered amidst the corpses. He was dressed in a large, black suit of armor, not unlike the ones worn by the soldiers below him. On his back was a large silver sword, tied around his body. There was a helmet obscuring his face.
The man paused, and looked around. He walked toward one of the bodies, one of a brown-haired man with a similar sword.
“General…” the man mumbled. He rummaged through the dead man’s things until he found a small brown notebook. The pages were stained red with blood. The man turned to the last page.
My name is General Styx. Or rather, that’s the name I took when I came here… I am about to head out into what may be my final battle. I am writing this as a brief record of my life, as I feel that it shall be important later on…
I am not of this world. I was from a land called Earth, where I served as a soldier in a pointless war for several years with my best friend…
The man paused. The name of the friend was covered in blood.
We were both hoping to someday go back to our home and start a normal life. However, we did not get the chance…
One day, a scientist arrived at our base. He needed a volunteer for an experiment he had been working on. My friend and I volunteered.
I was the first one experimented on. They gave me a serum…it didn’t work. At least, that’s what I had thought. Discouraged, they sent me back to my base. They kept my friend for when they tried again. Once more, they had apparently failed.
Several years later, we returned home. We both found wonderful women and married, and eventually began raising children of our own. But I kept remembering that experiment…
One day, my wife had gone to take our daughter to a doctor’s appointment. A drunk driver crashed into their car. My daughter survived. My wife wasn’t so lucky.
I was angry and filled with grief. I temporarily sent my daughter to live with my friend; I couldn’t take care of her like this. And through my suffering, I unlocked a power, a power that had been given to me that day several years ago…the power to control water.
I began experimenting with my powers. I could pull water vapor out of the air and move it without touching it. I could pull water from faucets. I could even humidify the air.
I suddenly remembered that my friend had also taken the serum. When I went to pick up my daughter I had meant to ask him, but he wasn’t home. That day changed the course of my life forever…
My sister offered to baby-sit for me as I went off to look for him. Eventually, I found him…destroying a building with the power of lightning.
He had gone totally insane. The serum had drained away his sanity. I tried to stop him. He kept saying something about “Earth’s other side”…he had a crystal in his hands. He said he could use it to get there…
I geared up for one last attack. He countered with an attack of his own. They both hit the crystal.
And the next thing I knew I was here…in the world of Avalon. The other side.
I just wish that I could have seen my daughter again…she must be eighteen by now.
My wonderful daughter, Nara…
The man removed his helmet, revealing green-ish hair and cat ears. “General…” he muttered again, before departing from the battlefield.

“All make way for General Ares!”
The man walked through the castle walls and entered the throne room. On his sides were lines of soldiers saluting him. On the throne itself was Queen Nevi V, the reigning monarch of the Holy Kingdom of Vess. She had long, black hair, tied in a bun. She was wearing a white, extravagant dress. Her eyes were a bright green.
“Your majesty.” Ares knelt in front of her. “Styx is…”
“I know,” she responded, “as of now, you are the commanding general of the Vessian armies, General Ares. And I have a question for you.”
Ares rose. “What is it, your majesty?”
“What exactly were our men fighting against?” Nevi sat forward. “Vess has no real enemies, and we’re not involved in any wars.”
“That’s just it, your majesty. We have no idea.” Ares responded. “They were strange, dark creatures, with long claws. They seemed to be made of shadows. They just appeared out of the eastern ocean one day.”
“The eastern ocean…Ares, are there any islands beyond the eastern ocean?”
“Well, your majesty.” Ares paced around. “Legend has it that there is actually an entire continent beyond the ocean. I believe it is called ‘Avrus’.”
Nevi thought for a minute or so, and then once again began to speak. “Ares, I want you to take a small band of elite soldiers with you on an expedition to the eastern ocean. Head as far out as you can, and come back once you find something.”
“It shall be done, your majesty.” And with that, Ares left.
Next Chapter: The Magic Man

I figure I'll talk a bit about the three characters introduced here. Yes, the dead guy is important too. Those of you who know anything about what I've been talking about for a while know that Nara is the main character of the story. His full name is General Jeremy Tresdale. So...yeah.
The next character is General Ares Darian. He is extremely important...later on. We won't get back to him for a long time, but I might throw in a few of his adventures on the high seas into random chapters.
Ares is notable because he was one of the last characters to be created, even though he's so crucial. In fact, his wife and little sister were created ages before him. Now that I think of it, his little sister, Nyte Darian, was the first in the group to be created. She's eight.
Ares is kind of a brooding person to most, although you can't really see it here.
Finally, there's Queen Shiria Nevi V. She used to be much more important to the story; in fact, she was originally Nara's mother. She was the second-to-last character to be made.
Random fact: Her first name was just made by me right now. Crazy, huh?
This prologue also introduces the world of Avalon. Unfortunately, you won't see it for quite some time. For now, we go back to Earth.
