Title: Claymation Question
Description: This seemed like the best place for it..

Filipe Monteiro - July 7, 2008 08:59 AM (GMT)
Hi, everybody. Well, I have a small Claymation question and that is: How do I make my Character jump/be on the air?

Thank you.

Hey-hello thar!

To have something jumping or floating you'll have to either attach it to a little podest, stick, contraption, string, anything you can easily erase out later with Photoshop or such. Because that's what you'll have to do for every single shot while a character is in the air.

Unless you find a way to actually neutralize gravity for a bit. Or throw the character and hope you can make a photo of it the right moment. Or cheat in some clever way where the character actually IS touching something somewhere to be held up by it.

They said there'd be a third game and there wasn't. D: Dirty liars.
(... assuming they're not talking about Boombots which doesn't count in the slighest)

Thank you both for your replies... I have seen those skullmonkey's things. But If I use a holder of any kind, won't that deform the figure?

Good question.. For the most part they used foam latex with a solid skeleton for the figures in The Neverhood, so that would be quite a bit more stable. You'll just have to try and see what's best with whatever you use, I guess.

Either that or he's walking around and saving the Neverhood while getting a lumbar puncture. What a guy!

Or, you could just animate the figure on its side. That would be pretty limited, though.

Filipe Monteiro - July 12, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
In what way would the fact that the figure being animated from its side could be helpful?

You wouldn't need a support of any kind. Like I said, though, its movement would be limited because it would be confined to one directional plane (whatever it's lying on).

Not to mention the lighting might get thrown off by the change in perspective... Which might look a bit weird in the final video, depending on how different it is.
