It is the year 2510 and a war between the known and the unknown had just caused the complete annihilation of a city. For days, you could hear the desolate cries of the residents who could not leave even with the thick smog and rubble littering the streets. Many people died especially the adults who sacrificed their own life to save their children. They heard of a place, a refuge to take their children. It was an abandoned warehouse, in the middle of the city – now known as the slums.
Among the massive amounts of children ranging from newborn to teenager were five special thinkers who could not bear the thought of ever leaving. All of them, somehow, were connected – mind, body and soul. Night after night, they would commune together in the hallway drawing along the paint chipped walls, with an old box of crayons, a vision of their future home would be. The buildings were taller, the homes more lavish and people of all races, all ethnicities, of all cultures would be welcome.
Ten years later … The headline on the Daily Metro read: Metropolis Cove, a city rebuilt, a society restored.

After her interview, Katiya scuffled into her house, running a hand through her short hair. It had been a long day, but her hard work had paid off--she was going to be a teacher.
"I'm going to be a teacher," she echoed in wonder, her chocolate eyes wide with excitement. "A teacher!"
The very idea of it pleased her to death, and she sighed in content. "Mama...Papa...look at me. Don't you wish you still had a daughter?" Kati said aloud, smiling self-satisfactorily at her ceiling. "Don't you wish that you could see me succeeding?"
Katiya sobered after awhile. They probably didn't, Her brothers had married and brought new daughters to the family, so they wouldn't miss her a bit. "Mama...I got a job now," she continued in a small voice. "As a teacher. you always said that I was good with children. You were right, Mama. You were right."

Later that night, Katiya attempted to sleep, but her family was on her mind, which was unusual for her to do.
She was the only daughter of the Tschenko, automatically making her Daddy's little girl. Kati's father was pretty strict, but when it came to his baby girl, anything in the world was possible, and vice versa. But when Daddy had asked her to marry Olek Litvin, she had to refuse his wishes. How could she marry someone with no sense of humor, adventure, or fun? Someone who only worried about making money?
Katiya made a face as she remembered staring into her fiancee's green eyes, thinking about how much her feet hurt at the times. It was almost as if it were yesterday, her lifting her skirts and sprinting towards the door in that heavy dress.
But it was all a memory now. The wedding, the family, the running. It was all the past. Katiya Tschenko had no family left, and she was never going to get married again.

The weekend had finally arrived, and Katiya was beat. As soon as she'd gotten home last night, she'd fallen asleep on her couch.
In the morning, she found that her head hurt. "Why does it feel like I have a hangover?" Kati groaned.
The doorbell rang, startling her off of the couch. "Coming, coming," she scowled, rubbing her forehead tiredly. "Hold your horses. When she did open the door, she found herself staring in Olek's green eyes.
"It's you again."

He grinned, holding up a bag that emitted a delicious aroma from its confines. "Here's breakfast if you want it."
Inviting himself in, Olek took a seat on the couch before turning to look at Katiya with a frown. "Were you going somewhere?" he questioned, taking in her clothes from last night.

Katiya sighed and closed the door. "If I say I was, will you leave?" she knew the answer already. No, he wouldn't.
"I somehow managed to collapse on the couch last night," Katiya offered him an explanation without knowing why she did so. "I was tired."

Olek clicked his tongue in disapproval. "That's no good, Kati," he shook his head, opening the bag with breakfast in it. "Was it a long day?"

"Yeah, actually, it was. You see, one of the students---" Katiya stopped talking when she realized what they were doing. She and Olek, having a friendly conversation in her apartment?
"Get up," she said quickly, taking the bag and pulling him to his feet. "You have to leave."

He frowned and tugged himself from her surprisingly tough grip. "What did I do?" Olek asked, looking down at Katiya in confusion. "I didn't even say anything."
