Title: Front Yard
Description: Welcome to our home.
Tevin - September 7, 2009 06:43 PM (GMT)
Corbin - September 7, 2009 07:08 PM (GMT)
Corbin's eyes were all over the place, still very much concentrating on the road but the sights around him were incredible. It amazed him how much beauty still existed even after his numerous visits to check the progress of their house. The trees huge over the road, sweeping the air with its long branches, bountiful green leaves and colorful blooms along them. Even the air was simply delightful; fresh and smelling of morning dew.
Looking over to his beautiful girlfriend, Corbin reached over and swept his fingers along her jaw. Sure, their relationship was rocky and challenging but when he didn't think of that, all he needed to know was that he loved her, everything; even her stubbornness.
He lowered his hand to her rounded, seven month bump and marveled at how it'd grown so quickly in the last month. Soon, they will be welcoming their child into a loving home, surrounded by their dysfunctional family. He didn't want to think about the negative things; about her difficult pregnancy and worse, the cancer that was taking a toll on her.
Corbin pulled his hand back and placed it on the steering wheel, curving the car up to their house.
Demi - September 7, 2009 07:44 PM (GMT)
All throughout the trip, two hours long from the main village outside Metropolis Airport, the soon-to-be mother was unable to keep her eyes open. She tried to stay awake and talk with Corbin about everything except their impending troubles concerning her health and the wellbeing of the baby she carried. But with the gentle humming of Corbin's car and the beautiful calming sights around them, even Demi could not stay awake and soon drifted off in the midst of Corbin's talking.
Soon though, Demi stirred from sleep when she felt the gentle touch of her companion on her stomach and the baby kicked lightly at her tummy. She shifted her eyes to Corbin's face to greet him when a large house at the corner of her eye caught her attention. Her eyes widened and she jerked her gaze to gape at the house. "Where is this place?" she asked.
Tevin - September 7, 2009 07:50 PM (GMT)
Deciding to drive separately, Tevin laughed at Victoria's light humming at the music playing in their car. His spirits were slowly uplifting ever since Alani declined to ride with them and instead with her 'friend' who she was yet to introduce fully to him. Still, Victoria begged him to be kinder about it and he tried his best, worried about his younger sister's well-being.
He kept glancing at the rear-view mirror to see if she was on her way but he had no idea what vehicle she was using. They exited the highway and drove down a long, winding tar road that was framed on each side with tall and grand redwood trees.
Tevin was quite excited to reveal he and Corbin's long secret to the ladies and hoped that they would like it. He hoped the two ladies could raise the babies here safely and well.
Corbin - September 7, 2009 07:51 PM (GMT)
A smile widened on his face as he turned once more and began to slow the car slowly to a stop in the long driveway leading to the grand house.
He knew the ladies would love this place. It was stylish, modern and there were lots of room so everyone wouldn't be crowded in the space like their last small house. Everyone would have their own bedroom and bathroom, two living rooms, studies, a large backyard for the kids. He smiled at that thought, wanting to see what their child would look like.
"7051 Dragonfly Terrace ... this is it. Welcome Home," he announced stopping the car and placing it in park.
Demi - September 7, 2009 07:55 PM (GMT)
Demi was now wide awake and her eyes focused on the beautiful stylish place that Corbin now named home. "Oh... my... goodness!!!" she exclaimed, startling herself and the baby who kicked against her stomach, causing her to become a bit breathless.
She laughed when Corbin gave her an alarmed expression. "Don't worry. I'll stay calm." Then she reached out a hand and smacked his arm. "Corbin, how did you do this? Is this really ours?" Her eyes remained on the grounds, inspecting and marveling it from the rooftop to the glistening pond at the front of the driveway.
Victoria - September 7, 2009 07:57 PM (GMT)
The song came to an end and Victoria stopped humming, also ceasing to rub her belly. Music seemed to calm the little creation in her belly and she smiled. "She fell asleep. Thank goodness," said Victoria, reaching over and touching Tevin's hand. "She's super, super active Tevin. I wish you could feel how much she moves around. Well, I'm sure you do when my belly is pressed against your back."
She laughed softly and began to pay attention to the surroundings. The lush green sparkling beyond them, the warm sun against the windows, a few sparse but large houses along the same road.
"I know I asked like ten minutes ago but are we there yet? I have to pee really badly."
Corbin - September 7, 2009 08:01 PM (GMT)
He laughed softly and rubbed her belly, hoping his touch would calm the excited baby within her. "A little harder and you might have left a bruise." he teased and reached over to kiss her perked lips.
"And yes, this is ours ... our home. Tevin and I are officially proud owners of this gorgeous house." Of course they were proud. They had somehow pulled off this grand piece of architecture together, hiring the best construction company at the best price since Corbin, of course, pulled his strings. Together the men designed the house, wanting it to be comfortable and grow with them and their expanding family.
"So .... what do you think?"
Tevin - September 7, 2009 08:01 PM (GMT)
He couldn't see Corbin's car since they'd left a little later to load up all of Victoria's luggage so he had no doubt that the first car had already seen the house. Tevin grinned when Victoria spoke to him gently. He was thankful that they'd cleared up all the trouble between them. Of course they had their arguments but for now, he hoped that this gift would ease things more for both.
"In a bit, ladybug..." Tevin smiled, fingers drumming at the steering wheel as he tried to hold in his excitement although he'd been there a few times to oversee the settling of furniture into the house.
The air was welcoming, the wonderful sight of the grand trees marking the road and leading them up a little hill to where the house's rooftops peeked over some redwood. He maneuvered the car up the hill until the whole house came into sight. "Here we are... 7051 Dragonfly Terrace."
Victoria - September 7, 2009 08:06 PM (GMT)
Victoria placed a hand over her chest, breathless for a few seconds and finally exhaling. Her sky blue eyes began to glisten from the tears that gathered. She was overwhelmed with happiness. Everything had been going so well with her and Tevin, able to work out their differences. And sure, nothing was perfect but the fact that he went through all this to provide her with a good life, showed what a wonderful man he was.
Although he was driving, she reached over and wrapped her arms around him loosely. Her tears dripped on his cheek and she laughed at her silly emotional show.
"Tevin, really, I am speechless," she responded.
Demi - September 7, 2009 08:07 PM (GMT)
"What do I think?" Demi laughed delightfully. "It's more than beautiful, Corbin. I can't believe I never suspected you were doing something like this." She shook her head incredulously. Actually, now that she thought about it, he did travel more often these last six months. "Wow, Corbin, you've officially floored me." She prided herself in not being surprised by whatever Corbin did but she had to admit that he'd pulled a fast one on her.
She waited until the car engine turned off before she unbuckled her seatbelt. "Wow..."
Tevin - September 7, 2009 08:09 PM (GMT)
Tevin laughed, keeping his hold on the steering wheel while parking the car right next to Corbin's car. He waited until he'd turned off the engine before he shifted his head and accepted a kiss from his girlfriend. "No problem, my ladybug. I'm glad that you like it."
Corbin - September 7, 2009 08:13 PM (GMT)
"Yes," he cheered and then began to tease her, "I've succeeded in finally surprising you. You have no idea how happy I am about that." He threw a mocking grin in her direction before getting out of the car and stuffing the keys in his pocket.
And then, like a gentleman, he went over to her side of the car and opened the door, helping his pregnant girlfriend out. It was harder for her to do things on her own so she was a little more dependent on him. Ousting her out easily, he placed a hand against her back while closing the door to the car.
"Yeah, it was really hard for Tevin and I to keep this from you and Victoria. We were worried we were going to get caught or accused of something else. But in the end, it all worked out and now, we have a place of our own." He brushed his stubbly jaw against her cheek.
Victoria - September 7, 2009 08:16 PM (GMT)
"You're such a sneak but I'm so glad ... were you and Corbin in this together? Oh man, you two are so going to get it." She laughed again and spotted her best friend by Corbin's car. She was so excited to see Demi, although it was just a few hours since they last saw each other. Still, she wanted to just scream and jump with her bestie. Without knowing, their quirky dreams had come true.
Demi - September 7, 2009 08:16 PM (GMT)
Demi smiled and wrapped an arm around his back. "Gosh, Corbin... I don't even know what else to say except wow." She turned her head and placed a kiss on the corner of his mouth. "Thank you so much." Her eyes lifted to gaze at the house from the side of his head, shaking hers incredulously. "Insane..."
When she realized that Tevin's car was on the other side of her, Demi released Corbin and bent over Tevin's window, pointing at him menacingly. "I can't believe you two were successful in tricking both of us!" she accused her brother-in-law lightly.
Tevin - September 7, 2009 08:19 PM (GMT)
Tevin smirked. "Of course, of course." He rubbed her stomach lightly, still marveling that they were about to be parents. It was exciting and scary at the same time but it was the drive he needed to cooperate with Corbin and create this dream home for all four of them.
At the tap of his window, Tevin turned to see Demi talking to him and accusing him. He laughed and shook his head. "Take that up with Corbin." He winked in Victoria's direction and waited for Corbin to steer Demi from the door so he could get out to help Victoria.
Victoria - September 7, 2009 08:24 PM (GMT)
But Victoria was already getting out of the car, using the door as her leverage and finally lifting up, her round belly peeking beneath her shirt that was too small to fit over her bump anyway. She walked briskly, trying to get closer to the house. She wiped her eyes again and turned around, a bright smile on her face.
"Dem, oh my gosh, do you believe this? Look at this place ... it's made for us. It's incredible," she said, tears falling down her face still. Victoria would have never dreamed she would end up here. Her life meant more to her now than before ... She had so much to live for.
Corbin - September 7, 2009 08:27 PM (GMT)
Corbin pulled Demi away from Tevin's door and strode over to Victoria who was holding the underside of her belly as she hopped in place.
"Look who swallowed a mexican jumping bean," teased Corbin.
Victoria smacked his arm and then proceeded to give him a hug but her arms couldn't quite reach around him. She laughed softly, cheeks red from all the emotion.
"Your welcome," he said quietly to her.
Demi - September 7, 2009 08:30 PM (GMT)
Demi smiled warmly at her brother-in-law who was now able to exit the car and she walked over to him, falling into his arms. "I'm so proud of you, Tevin. This is the most amazing thing you've ever done." She pulled away from him and gazed up at his face before ruffling his hair. "Thank you."
Tevin - September 7, 2009 08:32 PM (GMT)
Tevin chuckled as the two women hugged each other and squealed over how beautiful the house was. "I'm glad you like it," he said once Demi came over and embraced him. He supported her back while steering her back to her boyfriend. "It's really big and we'd give you a tour once we're all rested up." He glanced over at Corbin. "Whadyou say?"
Corbin - September 7, 2009 08:37 PM (GMT)
"I totally agree. That was a bit of a drive. I guess I never realized how long it is from the city of Metropolis to here because I wasn't that excited like today. I just wanted to be here and surprise the heck out of Demi." He kissed her cheek and looked to the house. "But yeah, we should get the mommy's inside to rest, maybe get something to eat. Are any of you hungry? I have enough energy to throw something together."
Victoria - September 7, 2009 08:38 PM (GMT)
"The only thing I really want to do is pee," said Victoria, crossing one leg over the other. "Either my bladder is full or the baby is just laying against it. But yeah, I'm actually starving so that would be nice for the men to cook us dinner too."
Victoria turned her head to Tevin, her eyes glowing from her extreme happiness. "I just want spaghetti ... again."
Demi - September 7, 2009 08:41 PM (GMT)
Demi cast her eyes heavenward at Corbin's light jab and she shook her head. "I have a feeling I'm not going to live it down that you successfully tricked us." She scooted close to him, hooking her arm under his elbow. "And I want some fettucini alfredo with tuna." She licked her lips and smiled up at Corbin. "Lead us inside, Mr. Warrington."
Drew - September 7, 2009 08:42 PM (GMT)
It was always good to take a long ride on his bike but even better because he could feel her presence around him; her long arms locked around his torso while the wind blew her hair in a thousand directions.
As he zipped down the winding paths, shifting the bike from side to side, Drew tilted his head back. "We're almost there," he told her, peering at his GPS that hung near the speedometer. "Then you'll be home with your family."
Drew was happy that Alani finally found her brother. It was what she wanted for a long time and he had supported through it all. It was just hard knowing that they wouldn't see each other much. Drew found a place in Metropolis, which was a good one to one and a half hours depending on the traffic. He hated that they would be apart that way but what mattered was her happiness.
Tevin - September 7, 2009 08:42 PM (GMT)
"You and spaghetti," he muttered and his brow furrowed when she mentioned that her bladder was being affected by the baby's weight. He was not an ob-gyn but he had enough sense to know that their baby was growing quite well, putting some pressure on Victoria than normal. Walking over to her, he braced her hips and led her toward the door. "Then let's get you inside so you can use the toilet." He glanced back at Corbin. "Got the key, man?"
Alani - September 7, 2009 08:47 PM (GMT)
Alani leaned her head against the broad and strong expanse of Drew's shoulder. She breathed in the husky scent of Drew's cologne plus his leather jacket and the clean air and decided to hold on to this memory for as long as she could. She sighed softly, wrapping her arms around him tighter, not wanting to let go.
Her heart was in heaven, loving the rush this motorcycle ride gave her as well as the company of her boyfriend. She closed her eyes and just reveled in this solitary moment. Inside she battled with her thoughts, hating that she would have to be separated from Drew... But she couldn't very well ask her brother, who she had just met a few months ago, to let a stranger stay with them.
Maybe later, when they'd gotten closer, she could ask him. Holding a wistful smile on her face when he announced they were almost there, Alani snuggled closer to his back, wishing the ride would never end.
Corbin - September 7, 2009 08:54 PM (GMT)
"Oh yeah, the key," he said, digging through his pocket but not finding them their. "I must have left them in my briefcase which is in the car. Give me a minute." He let go of Demi and rushed back to the car, popping the trunk open with his control. Corbin dug through his bag, finding the solitary key on a ring.
"Found them," he announced, closing the trunk. He began to head back and turned around when he heard the noise of a motorcycle a distance away. It was like he recognized the sound; like he knew who it was. He shook his head.
It had been months since he heard from Drew, his best friend. After saying goodbye in the hospital, they lost touch. It'd really been six months. Corbin simply shrugged it off. He had more concerns on his plate and it wasn't the first time Drew hadn't called him anyway.
Victoria - September 7, 2009 08:58 PM (GMT)
"Hey, what's the hold up Corbi? I really have to go," said Victoria walking toward the house when she also heard the noise of a motorcycle. It was rather annoying and she pouted her lips.
Demi - September 7, 2009 08:59 PM (GMT)
For Demi, however, the sound of the motorcycle brought a smile to her face. She knew that it would cause all three to frown disapprovingly but she was rather fond of who it would bring to the side of the house. "Alani and Drew are here!" she announced and turned around to wait for them.
Tevin - September 7, 2009 09:01 PM (GMT)
Tevin's ears perked at the sound of the motorcycle and his jaw clenched, turning to wait for who it could possibly be. He knew it had to be Alani and since Demi announced the 'friend,' his shoulders stiffened. "Are they dating or something?" he muttered, forgetting what the guy had done to keep Alani safe all these months.
Drew - September 7, 2009 09:02 PM (GMT)
"Hey, are you alright baby? You feeling okay? You've been really quite most of the ride," noted Drew, bringing her hand up to his mouth and kissing her palm. "It's going to be alright. This is where you need to be ... with your family. I can't give you much. I can barely keep a roof over my head sometimes. I don't want to have to worry that I'm not fulfilling your needs." He tried not to frown but it was true.
He wasn't the smartest or the type to keep a job for long. Deep down inside, Drew knew he couldn't provide for Alani. It tore him to shreds to know this and made him want to work harder. But despite his drive, he just couldn't get it together.
"Anyway, this will be good for you," he said encouragingly. "And I'll come and visit you as many times a week as I can."
Alani - September 7, 2009 09:11 PM (GMT)
Alani squeezed her eyes, not wanting to hear what he was saying if it wasn't sweet nothings in her ear about his feelings for her. It annoyed her that he would think he wasn't worthy to have her just because her brother was a doctor and the people he associated with would frown on her relationship with him. She was old enough to love and be with whoever she wanted. And no matter how rough Drew was on the outside, she had confidence that he was a good and honest man. He just needed more people to have faith in him.
She shook her head and sighed. "It better be more than just a few times a week, Drew... Do you think we can go somewhere else for a few minutes. I don't want to leave you just yet."
Corbin - September 7, 2009 09:12 PM (GMT)
Corbin turned back to Demi, scratching his head in confusion. "Wait, you mean Drew, my best friend Drew, is still with Alani? I thought they broke it off or whatever. I don't understand."
Corbin probably wasn't in tune with all the new developments because he was always away either working on the house or off on a business trip or convention. He really didn't know much about anything except for Demi's condition and making sure the doctors visits were being kept. He was really out of the loop.
"Before they drive into the driveway, someone needs to tell me what's going on. I mean, Drew hasn't even called me in a few months. Not even to ask me for some ridiculous loan." Corbin crossed his arms over his chest and peered at Demi, mostly cause there was no displeasure on her face.
Victoria - September 7, 2009 09:13 PM (GMT)
"Ugh, I really don't like him. I think he's still a dirtball," said Victoria, rolling her eyes heavily. "Now please give me the key to the house before I have a puddle at my feet."
Tevin - September 7, 2009 09:15 PM (GMT)
Tevin frowned, not liking that his younger sister would be stubborn enough to date this guy when she could do so much better. Yes he had a lot to be grateful to Corbin's best friend for, but as far as dating his sister--he was not so generous. "Yeah, Demi, how about you tell us what's going on between them?"
They were now entering the house although Tevin continued glancing over his shoulder for any sign of the motorcycle that chartered his sister and her not-so-welcome boyfriend.
He walked to the door and pushed the key into the doorhole before stepping aside to let Victoria in. "Be careful ladybug. It's marble floor right up front. Don't run."
Demi - September 7, 2009 09:17 PM (GMT)
Demi rolled her eyes in exasperation. "You guys can be such snobs, it's annoying... And yes, from what she told me, they are still dating." She folded her arms across her chest and smirked. "What's so bad about your little sister dating him? He's a manly man, so what?" she directed this question at her brother-in-law, amused by the protective expression on his face.
Drew - September 7, 2009 09:18 PM (GMT)
"Sure, I'd like that. I don't know how welcome I'll be at your new house. And I only plan on staying until I know you're okay and settled into your room. Then I'm gone," he said without holding back his mouth.
Ahead, Drew saw little park just before having to turn into the house. He skillfully swerved the bike off the asphalt road and parked in the gravel. His feet touched the ground as he waited for Alani to climb off the bike. Once she did, he took off his helmet and hooked it on the handlebars. Shaking a leather gloved hand in his hair, he loosed it from his head. It was refreshing to feel the breeze across his face which had beads of sweat across his forehead.
"You look hot with that jacket," he said, admiring the black leather jacket he bought her from a thrift store.
Victoria - September 7, 2009 09:20 PM (GMT)
"Even if I wanted to run, I couldn't," she responded, looking from left to the right, wanting time to admire all the fine details on the walls but her bladder was pulsating. "Uh Tev, what direction? Left, right ... " She squeezed her legs together.
Tevin - September 7, 2009 09:22 PM (GMT)
"Left, Victoria..." He sighed and walked around Demi to assist Victoria down the hall to the guest bathroom.
Corbin - September 7, 2009 09:23 PM (GMT)
"I'm not being a snob. Drew has been my friend for a long time and I know him well. He's not boyfriend material ... he was much like me but worse. I just don't want to see her hurt because he screws up, which he will. It never fails, Drew cannot stay on the right path. He falters. Besides, what kind of life can he give the girl? He doesn't even have a job."
Corbin shook his head and looked up to Victoria. "The first door on your left Vic."
