Miguel - June 8, 2009 03:53 PM (GMT)
Having already informed the boys of the few house rules he had, Miguel led them into the cabin. "This is it," he announced. "You guys pick your beds."
Jaleel - June 8, 2009 04:01 PM (GMT)
Although he didn't know most of the people in his cabin, Jaleel was alright, since Tre was with him.
"You can take top," Jaleel offered. "I know you're scared of heights and everything, but--"
He was silenced when Tre hit him with the duffel bag slung over his shoulder. "'Man, shut up," Tre laughed. "Bottom bunk for me."
Anwar - June 8, 2009 04:04 PM (GMT)
Anwar entered the room with his ipod still blasting. He was followed by the tall Hawk who was still annoyed that he had to be here with little kids. Strolling inside, he ignored the other guys and picked a vacant bed by the door, opposite the counselor's bed.
Grayson - June 8, 2009 04:08 PM (GMT)
Grayson, jamming to the reggae music blaring through his iPod, came in confidently, bopping his body along with the beat of the steel drums that played in the background.
Jaq - June 8, 2009 04:11 PM (GMT)
Jaq slung his back onto the top bunk of an empty bed and climbed up. He heard the sounds of a few people's ipods. Music fiends he could deal with. It could have been worse.
Hawk - June 8, 2009 04:14 PM (GMT)
Now this was ridiculous. He was far too old to be associating with kids three to five years older than him. What kind of foolishness was this? Could this be a ploy to make Hawk feel disgusted with himself for the condition he was in and force him to hurry and graduate?
"I heard you, old man..." he muttered, stung by the thought of it. He gritted his teeth. All the bottom bunks were taken. This was NOT cool. He stood in the middle of the room, scowling at the ceiling.
Tre - June 8, 2009 04:15 PM (GMT)
Once settled on his bed, Tre's attention was directed to the center of the room, where a pale, tall kid was standing in the middle of the room, looking pissed.
"What's his issue?" Jaleel asked Tre curiously.
"Who knows?"
Grayson - June 8, 2009 04:18 PM (GMT)
Grayson strode past the angry, tall guy, shrugging his shoulder nonchalantly. "Ain't dat bad man," he said in a Trinidadian accent. "Ya got ta look on da bright side."
After he said that, he picked one of the top bunks out near a bunch of other guys he didn't know.
Jaq - June 8, 2009 04:28 PM (GMT)
Jaq laughed at the redhead kid's words and doubted the angry kid below would appreciate them. He was a little relieved to see someone who wasn't from America. He hadn't adjusted really and to hear another accent was reassuring. "Sometimes there isn't always a bright side."
Jaleel - June 8, 2009 04:38 PM (GMT)
Jaleel turned away to start unpacking. "So what's with you and Keziah, man? You feeling her or what?"
"Later, Jay," Tre smiled. "I'll talk to you about it later."
"Wow. I guess that means yes. Are you going to tell her?"
"Chill, bro. Later."
Hawk - June 8, 2009 05:10 PM (GMT)
Hawk gritted his teeth and scanned the room for the counselor. He walked over to the shaggy-haired young man who didn't look that much older than him. "No..." he said simply. "I need another bed."
Miguel - June 8, 2009 05:12 PM (GMT)
Miguel blinked at the camper who just stared at him. "What's the problem?" he questioned, confused.
Hawk - June 8, 2009 05:12 PM (GMT)
Hawk pointed to the beds. "There are only top bunks and I don't do top bunks. I want another bed." He could've easily stared hard at someone to make them get up but he didn't want another call from his uncle.
Miguel - June 8, 2009 05:15 PM (GMT)
"Well," Miguel started. "Why don't you ask someone to trade with you? I'm sure they would, if you just asked."
Hawk - June 8, 2009 05:16 PM (GMT)
"I have to ask someone to get their bed from them?" Hawk repeated incredulously. "Is it not obvious that I cannot stay on a top bunk?" he asked without raising his voice.
Grayson - June 8, 2009 05:30 PM (GMT)
"True," answered Grayson. "I guess juss in my world dere is." Grayson held out his hand to the boy with tossled black hair. "I'm Grayson."
Jaq - June 8, 2009 05:34 PM (GMT)
"Jaq," he said returning the introduction as he shook Grayson's hand. "So is this camp thing any good? This was last minute for me."
Grayson - June 8, 2009 05:45 PM (GMT)
"It should be. We'll just have ta see when da time comes," said Grayson, nodding his head at Jaq. "Where ya from? Ya gots a cool accent."
Jaq - June 8, 2009 05:47 PM (GMT)
"Thanks, I'm from France," Jaq answered with a smile. He missed his country. "That's not an American accent you've got yourself. Where are you from?"
Miguel - June 8, 2009 05:49 PM (GMT)
Miguel smiled, despite the seriousness of the situation. "I guess it's not, at least to them. I can only suggest you asking somebody."
His phone vibrated in his pocket, and Miguel nearly reached for it, but seeing the look on the campers face, stopped.
Grayson - June 8, 2009 05:54 PM (GMT)
Grayson smiled. "I'm from Trinidad," he said, taking the top bunk so Jaq could have the bottom. "My beautiful home; a small lush island in the West Indies."
Jaq - June 8, 2009 06:56 PM (GMT)
"Sounds nice," Jaq said honestly. He had a thing for water and loved swimming so an island sounded perfect. "How long have you been here?"
Hawk - June 8, 2009 07:20 PM (GMT)
Hawk frowned. "Is this somehow funny to you?"
Miguel - June 8, 2009 07:24 PM (GMT)
"No," Miguel straightened. This guy was intense. "But seriously, go ask someone. They'll probably give it to you."
Hawk - June 8, 2009 07:25 PM (GMT)
Hawk was not about to ask some little kid to switch places with him. In fact, this whole trip was degrading. "I'll just talk with the director then." With that, he stalked out the door, slamming it after him.
Miguel - June 8, 2009 07:27 PM (GMT)
What was the point of all that? "Do you want me to ask someone for you?" Miguel questioned, not sure of what to make of this kid who was acting like an adult.
Grayson - June 8, 2009 07:28 PM (GMT)
"Like 'bout four years ago. My 'rents moved juss before da high school started. How about you?" Grayson pulled out his little flag of Trinidad and tied it around the bedpost.
Jaq - June 8, 2009 07:32 PM (GMT)
"Couple of weeks. Our dad figured we should just wait for summer to start before moving. This is my first real experience in America."
Tre - June 8, 2009 07:42 PM (GMT)
Tre looked at his phone and smiled, seeing a text from Keziah. "Morgan and Mariah? Yeah, they're cool people. How do you like camp so far?"
Grayson - June 8, 2009 07:43 PM (GMT)
"Good ole' American experiences," he chuckled softly. "You might like this camp thing. There's lots to do and a lot of pretty girls around."
Jaq - June 8, 2009 07:45 PM (GMT)
He smirked. He could definitely get behind the pretty girls idea. "It might be alright," he agreed. He was a lot more open to America than his brother was but he still had some reservations.
Tre - June 8, 2009 07:47 PM (GMT)
"I only know Jaleel, but the other guys seem pretty chill. No problems." he texted that.
Grayson - June 8, 2009 08:00 PM (GMT)
"But of course ... and anyway, we'll be stuck tagether. You seem pretty cool," said Grayson with a smile. "So do you have brothas and sistas?"
Jaq - June 8, 2009 08:04 PM (GMT)
Jaq chuckled. "True, you're not too bad yourself. And yeah, I've got both a brother and sister. They're around her somewhere." Which reminded him he should probably check in on the brat as Ric affectionately called her and see how she was doing. "Any siblings on your end?"
Grayson - June 8, 2009 08:14 PM (GMT)
"Just one older brother. He's 25, already married and two kids on da way," he said, proud that his brother had found his happiness and settled down.
Jaq - June 8, 2009 08:20 PM (GMT)
"Proud uncle huh?," Jaq said with a smile as he glanced out the window. He saw people heading out of their cabins. "Looks like we're supposed to be going somewhere."
Grayson - June 8, 2009 08:24 PM (GMT)
"Guess we should fallow dem, then," said Grayson, grabbing his iPod and phone, sticking them in the pockets of his cargo pants.
Jaq - June 8, 2009 08:35 PM (GMT)
Jaq got up as well, sliding his phone into his pocket and following Grayson out the door.
