Hi Guys! I’ve always loved FS2, but I am considering the closure of my site, I can keep a static site with information & statistics, but the script style website is expensive and I’m not sure it’s worth it anymore.

I’ve been thinking this for a while, early next year fees are due again, I’ve just lost the enthusiasm of coding (getting old, working too much, just life) I hate to close (because one day I will regret it), give me a reason… Ok debate… Go

We need a way to breathe life back into FS2, if only there was a way.

Stevie

By the way (or as the new ‘txt’ generation says "BTW") I haven't updated my profile pic ever since I joined, (2005) I will post an updated pic as of now in this thread.

Also, I want to say I'm sorry and I know I have ruffled some feathers along the way, I’ve irritated and frustrated a few (maybe more) simmers, but I’ve had and still do have such a great passion for this simulation.

I see what you mean Stevie.

If you look at the number of regular contributors to CAE3, the numbers are obviously much lower than they used to be.
I think we also have the problem now of fewer volunteers contributing to keep things going.
Roy is pretty busy and gets no help with validation, this leads to frustration when creators want to submit new venues. I don't blame Roy of course, we wouldn't be here now if it weren't for him and others over the years.
I myself have tried to keep things going by hosting "The Downer" that was originally set up by Lavaboy. If I look at the logs it is still being used. There were 14 downloads today but only by 2 different users.
However, now that Jase is not developing any updates, it can't last forever. We have to be grateful that he fixed the colour depth issue that made the program compatible with Windows 10, that at least gave us many more years (hopefully),
I still contribute to CAE3 all the time, currently trying to overtake the person in 6th place but really it's almost just a personal record rather than a fun community like things used to be.
Things move on, especially with IT and we are all getting older. lol
It would be sad to see your site go but I understand your thoughts.
How is mum?, I see that she no longer submits to the site?
All the best and thanks for your contribution to FS2 over the years, whatever you decide.

Mom is fine considering all that was going on with dad, she was stressed, but dad is doing better, cancer is a terrible thing, when mom was active in FS2 it was a no brainier I was going to continue but now she looks at life a little more serious and shes busy with her mom (my grandmaw) as well and she got a tablet that she uses now and not so much the PC.

Talking about IT, yes things are changing, I got a Oculus Rift to play around with, I tried my hardest to get FS2 to work but no luck with it looking good or the rift to recognize it.

What really bums me out is all the new fishing games are too "gamey", fismsim2 with DX12 would be the king of them all, still works thou as you said.

We will see, long time from now, thanks for responding SD, sometimes as long as one person is still interested, that's all that matters.

An idea that I have for FS2 that I may or may not have time to put together…

I want to put it here anyway, maybe someone can put into action and elaborate.

Here goes…

Take all validated venues (a list) and shuffle them, then assign a value to each, randomly 0 – 10 for example.

Do the same for species.

This can all be done programmatically, or maybe another way with limited entries…

Now when you submit (catchlog.dat or another way) a pair (species & venue) you get a score result of the two, at first you will not know the values, but if the competition lasted for a week you get the idea of venue and specie scores or points as you fish, and start to target them, and each week a new competition is created with new random values.

As a twist you could have a blitz or power-fishing, that last a day or an hour, whatever.

So, you fish anything and everything at first, not knowing what has the higher values, searching for the best pair (luck would be in your favor if you couldn’t fish much as others).

Could show anglers the point values and/or hide them if they are successful or frequent winners, to level the field.

My best, “off the head” name for this is “FS2 Hunter”

I really think it would work if put together properly, I know it can, very feasible, not sure anyone has tried yet.

Hope this all made since :)

Also, SD, thank you, and Roy and everyone else that does what they do for FS2, it is appreciated, I know our last conversation was about how can I keep my site up to date, I have slipped as well, it is just a lot of work sometimes, even the labor of love, sometimes needs a vacation. :)

StevieJack
That's a very nice idea for FS2. Would this be tied into the matches? or kept as a new approach to the actual FS2 ?

The idea looks good...
I always appreciate your work on CEA3 and I would mind if it closed the site. In Case of need I am available for help.
If I wanted to contact me my email is mattijudo@hotmail.com
PS: If the cost of the site was a problem, I think that all the most active participants could help you.

I have to agree with Mattia on the cost of hosting. If you need any help, hit the pm button. But just out of curiosity only, is it not possible to switch to a free web host?

I'm not asking for money, no worries, I just wanted to know if there was still interest in keeping it alive, I think I got my answer too, so it will go on for a while longer.

The score hunter idea is only an idea, I just got home, in 3 hours to bed, same everyday for a while, it didn't used to be this way (I used to go fishing every Friday :D). I would love some down time to play around with the idea.

So a score generator would assign a random score to each specie and each venue, I was thinking of doing all validated stuff, would take a while, if done by hand impossible to do frequently.

So another script base match is what I was thinking (not even I would know the scores so I could play too and eventually have it automated) but it could be done on regular matches or even a fun server, but the match organizer would have to take results and match scores, not sure yet, but I did think about this today, maybe Saturday I can mock something up.

If the fun server ran, and when over, then and only then ran the score generator once, it would work even for the organizer, if they were fair about it, would be a lot of manual work though.

Quick example, I have 25 venues and 25 species, randomly selected and the score for each randomly assigned.
Just as a visual, remember, in a match you will not know the score until you catch (submit catch clog etc..), or a buddy system is giving advice, team play here could be good.

In this example, venues and species not selected would be 0 score, but I would like to add all validated objects.

This is all random (0 - 15).

Venues...
Tithe Barn : Score = 14
Nice Ocean : Score = 10
Slow Water : Score = 13
Droitwitch Canal : Score = 0
Allandale : Score = 3
Up The Creek Without A Paddle : Score = 15
Hotspots Of New Zealand : Score = 2
Comoro Full Version : Score = 5
La Palma : Score = 8
Background See : Score = 4
A Golden Dream : Score = 1
Blond Tiber : Score = 4
Catfish River - South America : Score = 0
3 Different Rivers In Russia : Score = 3
Extinction Lake : Score = 6
Lowisko Specialne : Score = 9
Brynmill : Score = 4
Jezioro Srebrne : Score = 8
Plymouth Sound : Score = 11
Thai Holiday : Score = 14
Maud Foster Drain : Score = 9
Staw Europejski : Score = 2
De Lange Smalle : Score = 5
The Chatanika River, Alaska : Score = 3
The River Doubs : Score = 14
Tour Of Panama : Score = 1

Species...
Everglade Sunfish : Score = 4
Longfinned Gurnard : Score = 7
Chum Salmon : Score = 3
Hickory Shad : Score = 6
Pandora : Score = 9
Sooty Grunter : Score = 12
Mangrove Jack : Score = 8
Saithe : Score = 11
Trout Minnow : Score = 14
Black Chessa : Score = 1
Spotted Eagle Ray : Score = 13
Amberjack : Score = 0
Chromis : Score = 3
Hermit Crab : Score = 6
Blonde Ray : Score = 2
Flowery Cod : Score = 5
Mango Fish : Score = 8
Saddled Coral Trout : Score = 11
Hybrid Striped Bass : Score = 6
Piked Dogfish : Score = 9
Spotted Bream : Score = 13
Altai Osman : Score = 0
Scad : Score = 11
Vermilion Snapper : Score = 14
Blacktip Reef Shark : Score = 1
Florida Gar : Score = 5

The goal would be to find the highest scoring pair in a limited time, ties broken by weight.

Stevie

(Edit* I forgot to say this is random 0 - 15 not 0 - 10)
