I've been thinking the same.
I used to communicate with Roy via Facebook but it seems that his account no longer accepts replies on messenger.

Hope he is ok.

Nothing we can do really.

As far as I am aware, the only people that can add venues to the official downloader is Roy and Jase.

I am a bit reluctant to host non-validated venues on the SD Downer really, the whole point of validation was to check for errors, duplicated names and more importantly to stop creators causing problems deliberately.

I know that Black Night can be trusted but we need someone to oversee the process and there doesn't seem to be any who will/can do it.
I do not have time myself as I am involve in other projects.

I'll send Jase a PM to see if a new tester can be appointed and have access to the downloader.

In fact also me and Lelio have 10 venues ready to be validated (already sent to Roy, in the last seven months).
I hope you can contact Jase to resolve this situation.

I sincerely hope Roy is well and all is OK with him and his family but looking on the realistic side are there any members remaining who have the knowledge, skill and inclination to take on the task of validation and if not does this mean the demise of FS2. I attempted to answer a query from a member by Frank the Man who posted in the Forum Help section which in my view is not the correct section for him to post this type of question and which not long ago would have been moved to the appropriate section also at one time this subject would have resulted in many members offering advice, not so today!. :(

First and foremost, as Algy says, we all hope all is okay with Roy.

Validation, is a good idea in principle, but it does depend on people spending time and effort in checking all the criteria, which is perhaps why it is better for a team of people, rather than just one or two, to be part of the process.

The validation process, over a period of time seems to have become less stringent, as there are species such as weever (greater and lesser) with weights of up to 30lb!!

This is an inherently small species weighing up to a maximum of 4lb

Yes, I know this is a sim, but Jase always took pride in making it as realistic as possible in terms of stocked species and weights.

Maybe there could be an unofficial downloader, where venues are downloaded at the users own risk and no records can be attained?

I was thinking about adding a new section to the SD Downer for un-validated venues with a disclaimer that download at your own risk.
Most people are sensible but there are always idiots about who try to spoil things for others.
The other thing is duplicated venue codes which can cause issues accidentally.
Bit busy today but I'll give some thought soon.

Sounds as if there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon!. I don't fish matches and use FS2 purely as a means of relaxing and turning this troubled world off for a short period, as the great bard once said "each unto his own", so to continue - I don't understand the technicalities of managing the validation of catches in the matches (oop's a poet and didn't know it), is it possible to build a filter into the match and records system whereby if some bent idiot attempted to add an illegal species or weight of acceptable species to their catch or record it would be automatically rejected. please forgive me if I am talking a load of twaddle but I thought it may be worth mentioning.

Stevie Jack wrote a very good utility to check things in match results.
I used it after every match but to be thourough was time consuming.

Hi Algy

Venue validation is not really about matches.

We had problems years ago with ficticious species, vastley oversized species and more importantly venues that once installed invalidated exiting species which in turn invalidate existing veniues and in some cases completely ruined the FS2 installation to the point where it would not load.

Taking those points in order
1. Local records were ruined, imaging being proud of a genuine large roach only for someone to create a 25lb one!
2. Ficticous species although were not causing harm, people were offended by these as they took away the authenitcity and realism of the simulator.
3. It goes without saying that people were angry if their FS2 was wrecked or wouln't load after installing a venue or add-on.

Hope that helps explain the main reasons for validation.

SD

There are venues being stocked with vastly oversized species even with validation, (my comment about the greater weever in my previous post.)

There are so few matches these days, dare I say that validation is possibly becoming unnecessary ?

There will also come a time when Jase no longer wishes to pay for his web subscription, on the fishsim.net site, so even the records will no longer matter..

Yes, I still love to use this fantastic sim, but if Jase decided he wanted to pull the plug, I would have more than had my moneys worth :)

Agreed that we will have had our money's worth.

I see what you mean about matches and records but nobody wants their installation to be ruined by a rogue venue so it's worth having a bot of a safety net.

My own quick opinion: slow the flood of new venues, “fish what we got”, we have so much, so much good stuff…
Make it easier on the guys lifting the weight around here.
