i agreed to be interviewed for a really stupid tv show. they are doing a segment on attachement parenting and contacted me through melbourne babywearers, which i coordinate.
they've already interviewed people who will say stupid stuff about how responding to children is damaging. i need to come across as normal, not too hippy and out there. i've already said i won't discuss homebirth or vax, because those are too emotive. i do want to talk about why no cio, full term bf, bw is good for baby, co-sleeping is safe and appropriate. please help me out with links to anything i should remember to say, or not say. i have 12 hours till they get here. |

First of all, be yourself, and be honest.
Remember, Vax is not an AP issue - even though many APers choose to educate themselves about it and make unconventional choices in this area. 2nd, Why don't you remind yourself - why do you do this? It's instinctive, the baby is happy, and it makes sense for you and your family. Study after study has shown that CIO is damaging - babies who are left to cry alone have increased cortisol levels, and do not soothe easier. Studies also show that skin-to-skin contact and close contact between mom & babe (and babe and other caregivers) promote temperature regulation, reduced stress, increased breastfeeding, and generally helps create smoother relationships between the mom & babe. |

Emphasize that this is what works for YOUR family.
It's not about following rules from a book. It's about your babies being happy, which in turn makes you happy! Do you have any pictures of yourself hiking while babywearing or otherwise doing something that would be hard to do with a stroller? Travelling around Australia and New Zealand was far easier for us because we had a good baby carrier and I was breastfeeding. I'd pop my 2 mo old in the carrier, put some diapers in a daypack, and go through airports, streams, mountains, etc. easily, with my hands free. The baby was happy (she had mommy, lots of movement and a great view). When she got hungry, I just fed her wherever we were and didn't have to worry about bringing food with me. We met a lot of people who had never seen a baby being worn before (this was 9 years ago). Some were quite alarmed and asked us if she was okay, and some were even scared by the fact that she was quite quiet and didn't cry. We just needed to show them that she was comfortable, she had some mobility and wasn't being suffocated, and she wasn't crying because she was quite happy. |

Its done. They are showing it Monday. I have no idea how much they'll use. I think I was more eloquent off camera than on. But I'm pretty sure I managed to sound sensible and balanced.
This show did a dismal job of discussing hb last year. And I don't doubt they will all agree that attachment parenting is evil. But maybe at least one person will see and do some research. And at least we got them to take some wrapping pics, and a shot of DH wearing our 4 yr old. |
