Title: Sand in hair

Aargh! Someone took my 2yo to the park, where the playground has a sandpit surface. They didn't notice that she filled her cap with sand and dumped it on her head until too late.
This child hates having her hair washed. She is just getting over a phobia of the bath (she would cry so hard she'd gag, just at the mention of the bath) and it seems that the phobia was triggered by a hair wash that got a lot of water in her face.
Combine that with long, thick, curly hair that has cradle cap at the scalp (still - my kids seem to go from that to dandruff).
I just can't get all the sand out, even with brushing (which is hard to do because she won't stay still) and vigorous washing isn't going to happen. DH did manage to do some rubbing with a washcloth and rinsing with a cup on Friday, but there's still sand in the bed every morning from where she tosses and turns and it comes out of her hair.

Any ideas what I can do to get the sand out?

A dunk in the water (which I understand she won't want) and time are the only remedies I know of for sand. Can one o you hold her while the other pours the water on her hair (i.e. with he head tilted back so it won't get in her eyes)? Otherwise, just wait it out.

what about takingher to hair salon wher they have a sink that you can lean back into (i.e. melon heads on eglington)

how bout a bath and some rescue remedy after. maybe a movie to calm her down (gasp!) or some wine? if not for her than for you?

Thanks for the ideas. I think that she'd be too nervous about going to a salon and being touched by strangers. Maybe a bath with the added distraction of a big sister and bubbles to play with, would get more shampoo massaged into the scalp and more water poured on to wash it out?
I found rice cake in her hair this morning (and I have no idea when she last ate that? I suspect she got it stuck in her hair in the car, where the boys had been eating them). And one little rats-tail (dreadlock-thing) in the middle of the back. B"H she's started asking for me to brush her hair and put it up, so we might avoid a haircut!

I like the wine idea, but not sure I should indulge without my midwife's OK! Although maybe it would help prevent stress-induced contractions?!

My british MW was a big fan of red wine late in pg.

I do love her for so many reasons, and that was not the least of them. (OMG, I just discovered that we do not have a wine drinking smiley!! This is a SMILEY EMERGENCY!! Elisheva, rescue us!!).

I found that when my dd fought baths after the hospital, putting her in with her older sisters relaxed her, and after a week or two she asked them to wash her hair just like they washed theirs! Worth a shot...

A half a glass of red wine can be very relaxing during pregnancy. I have done so and my MW confirms that there's nothing wrong with that. (and even better if you combine it with a bath for YOU after the stressful bath for your dd!)

IIRC, my midwife did suggest I drink a half-glass of wine in the bath while I was having suspected pre-term labour contractions.
But, even when not pregnant, a half-glass of low-alcohol wine is sufficient to make me feel tipsy - I have such a low tolerance for alcohol!

Hmm. I like this one if we imagine we're drinking wine by the bottle:

I had a fear of hair washing, and butt=length hair, when I was little. My father had a system that worked for me. He put a big pot in the kitchen sink, and layed out a towel on the counter. I'd lie on the counter and rest my head on the pot, and he'd use the sprayer thingy to wash my hair.

It seems like the sand is all (finally) washed out - yippee!
And when I told dd that the sand was all gone because Abba washed her hair, she seemed quite pleased. Here's hoping that this week she will protest a little less about having her hair washed!
