*is SO doing this shiznit*
Name: Striders (formally known as the Cra'ill) Lifespan: Unknown, though the oldest living Strider is 278 years of age Appearance: The Cra'ill are very bird-like in appearance. Their heads are often adorned with a crest of feathers, and they do have beaks that vary in size and shape depending on species. There are four sub-species of Cra'ill, each with unique characteristics to tell each other apart at first glance. But there are a few rules that apply to all of the breeds. One is that they are hairless. Having feathers, they don't need hair. The second is that the males will always be brighter in color than the females. Interspecies breeding is common, but it will not create hybrids of the species. The children will either be one or the other, or--in the case of multiple children--there will be an assortment of each. The children of Striders are born, not hatched as most believe. The Cra'ill have never put down these rumors however, not caring enough of human thinking for it to matter. With the exception of the Quea, all of the sub-species have colored eyes, tending towards blues and greens more than browns or ambers. Tael'oll - By far the most intelligent of the Cra'ill, the Tael'oll species are the most bird-like in appearance. They walk upright like humans, but instead of the usual four limb configuration, the Tael'oll have six. There are no exceptions to this rule. The two extra limbs are actually wings that sprout from their shoulders, and most Cra'ill are able to sustain an easy, true flight with them, though there are some rare few who can only perform a powered glide with spurts of true flight. The coloration of this species is often very rich. Not bright, rich. Their plumage vary from shades of the deepest crimson to royal and midnight blues, to amber and chocolate browns. It all depends on the parentage of the Tael'oll that determines their coloring. Never are their seen the bright, flashy colors of some of the other sub-species, and their plumage is never dull in appearance. The female tend to be a little darker than the males, taking more crimson, garnet, and brown colors than blues, scarlet, or amber. Their feet have deadly talons adorning their toes, and can sometimes be used as weapons, but the Cra'ill prefer the more civilized methods of sword and bow now-a-days. The head crests of the Tael'oll are by far the most extravagant, often reaching nearly a foot from the top of their head. These feathers continue down the head and begin to shorten across the shoulders where the wings meet. They do have a tail, but it is more for display than actual function. Their entire bodies are covered in fine feathers that resemble down, except in areas such as their back, chest, and elbows, where the feathers are slightly larger and show more color. A Tael'oll Cra'ill will often turn to a livlihood of law or order, preferring to philosophize than anything else. Rarely will one see a Tael'oll out and about where humans live, as they know that their appearance can frighten some, and they are saddened by this. Kasol The Kasol of the Cra'ill are the next in line in the intelligence game, not being as smart as the Tael'oll but not being stupid either. They just think in a different manner. Where the Tael'oll are very abstract, the Kasol are very litteral, taking things at face value. This makes them very good problem solvers, and they can 'think outside the box' when they put their minds to it. They tend to leave that type of thinking to Tael'oll or the next level of sub-species, the Craeol. The easiest way to tell a Kasol from a Tael'oll, is that the Kasol do not have beaks. Their faces are more human in this regard, though their features are sharp and angular, giving them a hawkish appearance. Their eyes are more human in shape, as well, though their keen eyesight (by far the best among the Cra'ill) is not hindered in the least by this fact. They are taller than their Tael'oll cousins, being a bit leaner and lighter of limb. They do posess wings, and about half of them are capable of true flight, while the rest a mere power glide. Their headcrests are not as prominant, tending to be only up to 8 inches tall when fully erect. Their colors tend to be on the darker side, midnight blues, purples, blacks with white highlights, dark browns and greens. They make exceptional hunters and stalkers, and these Cra'ill are usually the ones who turn into loners. Their keen senses are the strongest of any Strider's, and they make the best fighters of any of their kind. Thus they drift more towards weapon-making and armor smithing and ranging than any other profession. Craeol These Cra'ill are even more human-like in build. They do not have beaks, nor do they have tails, and their crests only grow to about 6 inches when erected. Their faces are a little softer in features, and they are about as tall as their Tael'oll cousins. Also like their cousins, the Craeol tend to think in a more abstract manner, though they do not turn their attentions to philosophy and law. Instead, they focus on the arts such as painting, music, and weaving. Their long-fingered hands--which have very tiny feathers on them--are deft with whatever they pick up, be it an instrument, a brush or pencil, or a skeen of wool. Their wings are rather small, and can only support them in short glides. They are mostly for display, and they never cover them with cloth to hide them from the world. These are the most sociable of Cra'ill with humans and other species, even though they are obviously different from humans. Many Craeol sport very bright plumage, being of scarlet, orange, yellow, green, sky blue, royal blue, white, and anything in between. Their colors are never dull to the eye, always seeming to shine even on the darkest of days. Their feet do not possess the talons of the Tael'oll and Kasol, but they do still have the second joint below their knee and walk on their toes, the second joint actually being their ankle and heel. They have virtually no tail, though some do sport feathers there, and their body feathers tend to be soft and downy, not the rich colorations of the Tael'oll or even the sturdy protective feathers of the Kasol. Their bodies appear fuzzy because of this, though the feathers actually shed water quite well. Quea By far the most human-like in appearance, the Quea are the most likely Cra'ill to be seen living among humans. Because their crests are only about 4 inches long at the most, they can blend in very well. They have virtually no wings or tail, and their feathering is sporadic at best. Their skin tends to be of dark coloration, darker than most 'white' humans can get. Their feathers tend to be of duller colors, dull green, dull brown, dull red. A few feathers on their crests and stubby wings can be bright for display purposes, but most are a dull color. Their body feathers, what few they have, anyway, are nearly white, being very, very downy and holding water. They are the shortest of the Cra'ill, though their legs are still the same configuration as the other species. Their faces are softer still, appearing almost human save for their unusually dark eyes. It is because of these dark eyes that they are not as sociable outside of their own kind. Humans tend to get uncomfortable when faced with their gaze. The Quea are often found in domestic trades such as business, baking, and cobbling. Though just because they are domestic crafts, does not mean the Quea skimp out. The bread made by a Quea is renowned for its taste, texture, and color, the Cra'ill constantly coming up with new recipes and things to try. It is said that the first cinnamon roll was actually made by a Quea nearly 400 years ago. General personality: Most Cra'ill have very social personalities, preferring to be in large crowds as opposed to solitary homes. Thus, they tend to congregate into large groups known as Quaren, these groups rarely being less than 50 Striders. They have a very civilized society, and are very fond of order and justice, even if some views within individual members may vary slightly. As always, there are exceptions to every rule, and there will be the occasional lone Cra'ill, most of whom act as rangers or border patrols. But every Strider has an insatiable love of learning and near endless curiosities, and most find solace in learning a craft and then mastering it to absolute perfection. The weapons of Cra'ill make are some of the best in the world, and their art is likewise renowned. They are also very well known for their philosophy, the greatest of minds tending to be those of the Cra'ill. The Cra'ill tend to be very peaceful amongst each other, the only weapons of war being made for the defense of their Quaren or their race as a whole. They tend to get along with nearly every race, with very few exceptions, and those only because they pose a threat to the Cra'ill or the Quaren. The leaders of each Quaren are determined by superiority and common agreement. Age does not always count, and it tends to be males who lead, though a couple females have been noted in history for leading a Quaren. These leaders are called the Quar, plural being Que (kway). Their language is very similar to that of birds, including chirps, clicks, and trills in addition to lyrical syllables. A common love among Cra'ill is music, and often when multiple Quaren's meet, there is much singing and dancing, and more than a little alcohol. But Cra'ill have strong stomachs for the stuff, and it is very hard to out-drink a Strider. But where did the common name Striders come from? That is a relatively simple question with a complicated answer. For a long time before they settled and founded their own city, the Cra'ill were a wandering people. Living as nomads, they would roam form place to place, never staying in any one spot for very long. The nickname came from the long, loaping strides the Cra'ill would develop in order to travel faster and more efficiently. Today, the name is generally referring to the rare lone Cra'ill, as they have dedicated themselves to a perfection of tracking and stealth, and rarely will prey hear them until too late. They 'stride upon the shadows' as some have been known to say. With the exception of the Quea, most Striders do not live within human-built cities. They find the stone confining and cold, prefering the warmth of trees and growing things. And even the city-dwelling Quea have some sort of garden by their dwelling, though they will often choose to live on the outskirts of a city rather than within the stone walls. All Cra'ill have an affinity for nature, and in that sense their art is focused mainly in that area, and their weapons and armor is often decorated with trees, animals, or leaf shapes, though they are rather abstract in nature. In essence, the Quaren is a tribe, made of every species, the Craeol being the most common in any Quaren with the Tael'ill being the rarest, often with only one or two per Quaren. Special Abilities: They learn things very quickly, and will perfect whatever trade they take, often advancing the technology associated with that trade. It is not well known, but modern sword-making techniques were actually developed ages ago by the Cra'ill. Strengths: Wickedly intelligent, keen eyesight, good problem solvers, fast, agile Weaknesses: Stronger elementals than themselves; being split up; their connection can be a point of leverage within a Quaren, an enemy taking a valued member and threatening to kill them, thus making the entire group feel fear, and nearly unbearable pain if said member is killed. Abilities: Most can speak in more than one language, usually the common tongue of the area and their own unique language. They can fly. Every Cra'ill has a 'connection' with the rest of their Quaren, able to feel general emotions like fear, 'bad feelings,' and joy. They cannot send these feelings, nor can they speak mind to mind. It's like a sixth sense to them. Elemental (Y/N): Yes Which elements? It depends on the 'species.' The higher species are able to use elements such as light, shadow, and air, while the lower species often use the baser elements of fire, water, and earth. Very few have been known to wield more than one element; the most famous of Cra'ill was able to wield air and water. ((Oh hey! Two bird-like species! Cool! And I finally get a chance to use these guys! They have been bugging me for so long now. And I finally get to share them with people and not have everyone think I'm insane! And as soon as I get a new sketchbook--or my dad some more printer paper--I am SO drawing these guys for a reference of their differences, since I'm sure this is a bit rambling.)) |
