rifle, this won't make sense at all on the heels of my last post.
But, IMO< if you're keeping Strome here for a week or beyond or till he has 9 games
or cutoff date for sending back to JR's,

you have to play him at some point. just practicing with the team isn't enough.
This is a rink rat who thrives on competition. I think we have a winner (long term with this kid) which is probably why I'm over analyzing this anyway.

wink.gif

Sorry, but to those who say it is good for him to learn even if he stays up here but doesn't play...he isn't learning.

Sure, he'll learn what the best places to eat are in other cities the day of a game, and experiences like that, but we want him learning on the ice.

The whole point would be to show him nhl comp so he sees what he needs to go to get with the parent club and contribute asap. He isn't going to get that by sitting next to Garth and our 3rd goalie in the sky box.

Even if he stays up, plays 5 games and goes back down, that is far better than staying up and not playing. Otherwise, give him an internship in the sales dept.

The have ice rented for practices I've gathered....and there are NHL players practicing, scrimmaging, training, etc. between games. I would MUCH prefer he be given 9 games later, like after his season ends, but if he's going to practice and learn and train and improve his chances, he's got weeks of doing it with the pro team and it could culminate, when he's MORE reasonably ready, with 9 games where he'll fit in better. Maybe a smart move is to rear him in practice and with the guys and Weight and Tavares a bit so he can be solid his first NHL game as if he's not got it right now NHL-wise.

So.....I would like to believe he's almost ready and they're making sure he can play an NHL game without a high risk of being hurt or falling flat on his face.

Hey, it beats what we did with Bailey already!

STROME ASSIGNED TO NIAGARA
Islanders’ fifth-overall selection in the 2011 Entry Draft returned to OHL club

UNIONDALE, NY (October 13, 2011) – The New York Islanders announced today that Ryan Strome has been assigned to the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

The Islanders selected Strome in the first round, fifth overall, of the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The Mississauga, ON, native played in three preseason games for the Islanders.

Strome finished third in Ontario Hockey League scoring last season with 106 points (33 goals 73 assists) in 65 games, helping lead Niagara to a franchise-best 45 wins and 96 points. He was voted the Most Improved Player and Best Playmaker in the OHL Eastern Conference Coaches Poll. Strome also added 12 points (6g/6a) in 14 playoff games with Niagara and was named to the OHL Second All-Star Team.

Strome split his first OHL season between the Barrie Colts and Niagara, totaling 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) in 61 games. The 6’0, 177-pound forward won a silver medal with Team Ontario at the 2010 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge in Timmins. On the international stage, he attended the 2011 Canadian Junior Evaluation Camp.

Smart move, and really, the only acceptable move. Kid clearly wasn't ready. Not playing on an RNH, Jeff Skinner, or John Tavares rookie year level. Hope he dominates this year much the way Nino did last season.

That line was fun to watch. Huberdeau is another great young player and Stone is a big, strong guy who drives the net and has good hands. Strome fit in perfectly in the middle.

Strome's hands are magical. He needs to improve his skating though to make it on this level. And obviously his strength is a concern, but will improve with age. If he can improve his skating he's going to be a special player. I'm hoping he's here in 2013-14. One more year in junior and one more WJC will be beneficial to him.

OHL: Injury will leave Strome a caged ‘Dog; Dougie Hamilton faces suspension
By Neate Sager | Buzzing The Net – 17 hours ago

In a season as injury-riddled as this, having star centre Ryan Strome suffer facial fractures holds no terror for Marty Williamson.

Strome will undergo surgery on Wednesday in St. Catharines to repair what Williamson, in elaborating on an earlier report, called "a couple cracks in his cheekbone" that he sustained Friday when he was punched during a scrum by the Sudbury Wolves' Brody Silk. The New York Islanders first-round will miss at least two weeks. It's just the latest bump in the road for the contending IceDogs, who can count the number of times they have iced a full lineup this season on one hand.

"The main thing is it's not an out-for-the-season type of injury, you know, gone," Williamson said on Tuesday afternoon. "He'll get a couple weeks off and who knows? Ryan's been through an awful lot with the NHL [sticking with the New York Islanders into early October] and the world juniors. Sometimes there is a blessing in disguise with these things. It will allow him to refresh a bit and come back hungry and that's a good thing. We've seen that with [right wing Tom] Kühnhackl, he's obviously very fresh right now after the long layoff.

"We're possibly looking at a suspension to [star defenceman] Dougie Hamilton," Williamson added dryly. "So he'll probably get a rest, too."

Silk's punch, along with the check to the head penalty Hamilton received for a hit later in Friday's game that left Wolves captain Michael MacDonald with concussion-like symptoms, are each being reviewed by the OHL. (No video of either incident appears to have made it to YouTube.)

As Williamson noted, Strome has had a hectic few months between his extended stay in the fall with the Islanders and his focus on the world junior, where he helped Canada win the bronze medal. Despite being a year older and wiser, he's actually scoring at a lower rate than a year ago, with 40 points in 28 games after putting up 106 in 63 a year ago.

"It could be a couple weeks, it could be four weeks, somewhere in that range," Williamson said. "Ryan's having the surgery [Wednesday] and then we'll see where it goes from there. He has a couple cracks in his cheekbone and the nose is bunched up a little bit. It's kind of like, a couple weeks for sure and then we'll see what the pain is like and put a cage on him. He'll have to wear a cage for the rest of the year."

The IceDogs (26-13-0-3), who also have are hardly the only OHL team to be ravaged by injuries. With 12 NHL draft picks on the roster after loading up by adding Kühnhackl and defenceman Jamie Oleksiak, perhaps they're in less of a position to complain. The combination of having stars away at NHL camps and the world junior, along with Kühnhackl's recently completed suspension received for a head hit on Kitchener Rangers defenceman Ryan Murphy on Nov. 4 has meant they have seldom dressed a full lineup. They have won five in a row since the world junior ended, which could be a harbinger of what they might do if they ever get healthy.

"We've been able to hold our head in the standings even though we haven't had a complete team very often," Williamson said. "We've been doing it all year ... Most of the main guys were dressed the past two weekends and we looked pretty good, though.

Strome, 18, often mans a point spot on the IceDogs' league-leading power play. That's where his absence could be felt most, especially if it's doubled by a suspension to Dougie Hamilton, who leads OHL defencemen in scoring and has a cannon shot.

"Strome's a big part of our power play and those are the little things that matter a lot," Williamson said. "When you start losing depth you start worrying about injuries and maxing out other players."

The rest will definitely do him well. The Ice Dogs are a team that can go far in the playoffs, maybe even the Memorial Cup. He's going to play a lot more hockey this year.

Wolves' Silk suspended 12 games for punch

Postmedia News January 20, 2012

Sudbury Wolves centre Brody Silk has been suspended 12 games by the Ontario Hockey League for punching Niagara IceDogs' Ryan Strome during their game last week.

The two players were involved in a scrum after the whistle during Niagara’s 5-2 victory on Jan. 13. While Strome appeared to be off-balance, Silk caught him with a right jab to the face. Both players received fighting majors, while Silk received an extra two minutes for roughing.

The OHL ruled Friday that Silk deserved supplemental discipline for his blow to the head of Strome, in the league’s mind an unsuspecting player who was also injured on the play.

Silk, a 17-year-old from Iroquois Falls, Ont., will be eligible to return Feb. 15 against Sault Ste. Marie.

The above article doesn't quit do the story justice. STrome apparently had surgery for a broken cheekbone due to the suckerpunch. Silk jumped Strome and a scrum ensued. Before Strome could even drop gloves, Silk threw a big right hand into Strome's face.

tsn.ca
TORONTO -- The Ontario Hockey League suspended Brody Silk of the Sudbury Wolves 12 games Friday for his punch to the head on Ryan Strome of the Niagara IceDogs.

In a video of the Jan. 13 incident posted on the OHL's website, Silk pulls Strome from a scrum in front of the Sudbury net and lands a right hand that sends the Niagara centre to the ice.

Strome reportedly underwent surgery for multiple facial fractures and a broken nose.

In handing down its decision, the OHL said it took into account the exchange involved a blow to the head on an unsuspecting player and caused injury.

Strome was selected by the New York Islanders with the fifth pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft.

The 18-year-old has 18 goals and 22 assists for the IceDogs in 28 games this season, having missed a large chunk of the campaign while representing Canada at the world junior hockey championship.

Silk has 13 goals and 10 assists to go along with 69 penalty minutes in 36 games.

If you want to see the incident, here it is from the OHL's website
http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/article...y-action/114422

He will apparently be out 2-3 weeks

What a f#@king plug. Have fun riding the pine your whole career, dirtbag. thumbdown.gif

Man, Strome is doing well. Glad we gave him another year. One can only hope we don't pull a Nino next year and make him play 3rd line.

Reasoner will be here for another year. He will be 4th line center, so its obvious that one of Bailey and Nielsen won't be brought back if they plan on Strome playing.

I'm hoping you're looking at Tavares-Strome-Nielsen-Reasoner down the middle, if Reasoner isn't moved.

Ideally Tavares-Strome-Nielsen-Bailey.
