Portugal turns red as Benfica fans rejoice

QUOTE

LISBON, May 22 (Reuters) - Portugal was covered in red on Sunday as Benfica supporters celebrated a first Portuguese Premier League crown in 11 years after the Lisbon side clinched it's 31st title with a 1-1 draw at Boavista.

Fans of the nation's most popular club converged on central squares throughout the country, carrying red flags to honour victory in one of the most closely contested championships in the league's 67-year history.

Benfica finished the season on 65 points, three clear of defending champions Porto and four ahead of third-placed Sporting Lisbon.

In Lisbon, thousands of flag-waving fans shouted, "Benfica, Benfica" and "We are champions!" as they converged on Marques do Pombal square, one of the main roadways in the capital.

"I'm going to party all night. Tomorrow I don't have to work," said one fan, Francisco de Lemos. "Benfica is a nation. If you don't support Benfica, you're not Portuguese."

Another celebrating fan, Hernani Lucas, added: "I am very happy with Benfica's victory. It is the first of many victories that the club is going to have.

"Next Sunday we are going to win the Portuguese Cup, I am certain. Benfica is the best club in Portugal."

Cars streamed down main roads in cities and towns throughout the country, passengers enthusiastically waving flags out the windows as the drivers honked their horns.

Congrats. Doesn't this get them into the Champions league next year?

And, given their 5th place standing, that means Liverpool, who could win it, will be excluded!!! Best of luck to Benfica next year.

By the way, did you hear the Benfica offered 5 million $ for Eddie Johnson and MLS turned them down?
