Just curious About Simon.... the NHLPA page says Simon was signed for 475K. TSN reports he signed 1 year at 800K... I'm confused! :blink: :blink: :blink:

To answer my own question I found this on NHL.com.

In case anyone else is interested....
Simon Re-Signs with Islanders Article from NHL.COM

QUOTE
Simon had 27 points (10-17) and 75 penalty minutes in 67 games last season. The base salary in the deal is $475,000 but Simon will get another $325,000 in a games played bonus he will easily reach. He can also earn more in performance bonuses.

Question for Webby - Why do retirement years count against the cap? :dontknow:

aries44475 - September 8, 2007 02:08 PM (GMT)
While I'm not Webby I can help you out there Lax - If a player retires during a contract after age 35 and its not due to a major injury the contract counts against the cap. It was part of the last players agreement. Garth tried to apply for the injury thing since he had the knee problems at the end of the 05-06 season but was denied.

Webb20 - September 9, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
You are correct aries. :applaud:

It was done so teams wouldnt sign ridiculous long term contracts with aging stars.

If the player signs the contract AFTER age 35 that applies.

If the player signs the contract BEFORE age 35 it does not apply.

The cap hit for Yashin in 2010/11 is absolutely BRUTAL at 4.7m.

Actually I think its a good thing, it allows us to keep the kids at low cost. We don't HAVE to sig someone to a big contract cause we get that extra yashin cushion. Now if it was preventing us from signing someone I would totally agree that it'd be killer. By total mistakeI think it helps us.

At the quarter pole for the year, I think its a good time to see where we are with respect to the rebuild and who will stay next year vs. those we could live without.

Salary Cap Outlook

RFA's:
* Bergenheim (keeper)
* Tambellini (borderline)
* Schremp (jury is out)
* Moulson (keeper)
* Thompson (probably staying if Gordon stays)
* Andy Macdonald (PLEASE! Have him replace turnover Gervais)

UFA's:
* Weight (jury is out - needs to actually play for a stretch)
* Sim (good riddance)
* Jackman (expendable if we can find a productive 4th liner that can also fight)
* Park (borderline - I would cut ties because he's not the same defensively)
* Sutton (borerline - injury prone)
* Meyer (de Haan replaces him)
* Biron (trade bait at deadline)

Here is where we stand by next season:
Bergie and Moulson stay
Macdonald and de Haan replace Brutal Gervais and Meyers
Goodbye, Sim
Tamby and Schremp have to prove something over the course of the season still.
Same can be said for Weight, Park and Sutton
Bates deal comes off the cap after this year.

***** Note that Bailey and Okposo hit restricted free agency at the same time - after next season.
