Time for a rebound game and more importantly, payback after the opener.

Don't worry Nick, the whole team is flat.

This season I said the hell with center ice, I've got NHL live. Big deal, NHL is telling me there is no live feed for this game, thank god for the free 1 month preview of center ice or I would really be pissed.

Ever get the feeling the whole world is out to get ya.

Now I even hate this place more than ever.

Thank goodness for out PP tonight or we'd be down 2-0.

Nice shift by Grabs-KO-Franz line right after the FLA second goal to earn that PP and create scoring chances.

Still too much standing around and not enough skating and taking the body.

I think we've been on the PP a total of 28 seconds tonight and have 2 goals

What the FFFF is this organizations hard on with Franz???? Get him the FFFF off the PP. Are you kidding me? Get him off the PP. He's our point man? Didn't this work horribly last year?

Islander4cups - October 23, 2011 01:59 AM (GMT)
I understand the juggling of the reg lines with the efforts the last 2 nights, but out PP has been good. Why have we added Franz on the point of the PP?

Does Butch actually know the rules? He's saying he doesn't think a Fla player can get a penalty for clipping Franz face with the stick.

It isn't how high the player holds the stick...it is where on the opposing player it hits. The player is responsible for what his stick does.

And Franz proves again why he has NO BUSINESS being on the point on the PP.

We have a 5 on 3 and Franz takes his time reversing positions with Streit so we can get Streit on his off side for one timers. Franz took FOREVER to make this very BASIC move to get Streit's forehand to the center of the ice...wasted a good 20 seconds and Streit had 3 touches where he couldn't blast a one timer because he handn't switched yet.

Just a brutal effort tonight. We only play hard on the PP tonight. Just crappy.

Isles had a boatload of powerplays in the closing minutes and still couldn't capitalize

Franz's gash kept him off the ice during the PP so you got your wish.

Watchout 3-5 is just around the corner before having to play the Sharks next Saturday…Isles are very close to being 3-6…same crap different year, same old isles.

Dr. Generosity - October 23, 2011 02:51 AM (GMT)
We didn't deserve to win this one. But we were in a position to steal it thanks to Nabakov and a hot power play.

The power play clicked all night. So why pull the goalie for the two-man advantage at the close of the game? Personally I thought that was a mistake at the time, and the Isles seemed to prove it on the ice. Pulling the goalie required the Isles to scramble to defend their net from a hundred feet away each time the puck was near a Panther down low. It would have been better to keep the unit playing as it was, and if there was a turnover, force the Panthers to dump the puck into our zone and allow the PP to regroup. The PP unit never was able to regroup when it temporarily lost the puck. Now, pulling the goalie for a 5-on-3 when your powerplay isn't clicking makes abundant sense. But pulling him tonite threw a hot powerplay unit totally out of whack.

If there's a goat in this game, someone who stands out as having had just a brutal game, it's Trevor Gillies. Guy has like four freaking shifts in the entire game, one in the third period, and it's the third period shift that killed us. If you've got a DVR, watch it again at 3:28 (16:32 remaining). About 30 seconds in, the Panthers are pressing to score the game-winning goal. The puck comes around to Gillies, who can clear it out of the zone and readily relieve the pressure. But is he watching the play? No, he's too busy playing macho man to play hockey. So he ignores the puck to administer a meaningless bodycheck. I go "ulp!," and about ten seconds later the puck is down low again and behind Nabokov. Man, they invented the ECHL for guys like this.

The officiating crew had an off-night, too. Mr. Magoo saw that high-stick to Nielsen late in the third, but somehow four zebras missed it.

I have some bigger-picture concerns about this team and its direction, but I think I'll put away the acid pen for tonight.

No. He was right back out there after 20 seconds and couldn't pull a simple switch with Streit to get Streit's forehand on the inside for one timers.

This is a basic move pointmen make on the PP. You will see teams pass the puck for 5 seconds so the point men can rotate but no, not us because while Streit is looking to do it Franz is pulling icecapades.

stevedepot - October 23, 2011 01:00 PM (GMT)
Sorry, that NON call on facial cuts on Nielsen was the right call.

He fell forward and a foot and a half over the ice his face makes contact
with a stick and it's supposed to be called a "high" stick?

You're supposed to be responsible for your stick but not when a player falls
toward or into it below well below the waist.

We got beat. Comeau welcomed himself back by having an awful 1st shift, passing up a check but later playing much better than he has. Bailey finished zero hits but was decent on faceoffs, broke up some plays and made some nice passes.
All in all, not enough effort, will.

Matt "I play soft" Moulson finished ZERO checks again. One time hitting the brakes to stick check Kulikov.
What a pussy play, I was screaming at the TV.
This stuff has to be corrected if these guys want better success. I don't want to hear anyone saying we had chances on the powerplay. The bottom line is. We were outshot, outplayed and outworked.
Spinning this to a bright side argument relying on special teams when overall effort
wasn't good enough doesn't hide sh!t for me.

Hats off to Nabakov for some solid saves.

Shame on Garth Snow and everyone else for allowing DiPietro on this trip when there were never any plans to start him thereby making the decision to have him fly after a concussion a dumber one than originally thought.

3-5 record here we come.
I don't see this team beating the Pens unless the Pens play like crap and give it away.

Our 5 on 5 play sucks, and we need lines 2 and 3 go score.

KO = 1 pt

Bailey
Martin
Pandolofo
Hamonic
MacDonald
Comeau

I hate to say, "I told you so", but......there is reason not to get too excited over a 3-1 record in the first week of oct...its like as islander fans, we just never learn.

I said this road trip would be a test..and it sure was...this team has nothing, nothing but one line team...now that opp, have discovered that..poor jt, will suffer through another long stretch of goalless season..just like last year..

this team big mistake, getting rid of someone that actually had a backbone...how Zenon looking now?

oh wait, we still have haley, um, in b'port...yeah, thats a good place for him...

don't worry gillies will hold down the fort.

so, when do make the trade to get zenon back..or bring up haley....when the season is half done, and we are buried in last...

and to think my rep called me this week and ask if I was thinking about coming on board again, er, I gave him the wait another week talk...YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

CANADA - October 23, 2011 05:01 PM (GMT)
I'm not gonna freak out until we've played at least 10 games.

In my opinion, we need to have a winning record at the 10 game mark to avoid a complete disappointment.

On the bright side, we're only 2 points out of a playoff spot with 76 games left and some valuable games in hand on the teams we'll be battling with. :P

Having said that, there are still 4 games left in this teams honeymoon. ;)

Just as you were quick to claim that the first week shouldn't be taken as an indication of anything, neither should 2 games.

It is pretty funny the overreactions we've seen in the past week.

We've had the sky is falling because DiPietro is doing whatever it is he's doing.
Now we've got you playing the "I told you so" card because of back to back bad games.

Strictly speaking from statistics, over the past decade 80% of the teams in a playoff position by Thanksgiving have made the playoffs. I'll wait until that point to see the following...

1- do we look like we have a shot at the playoffs or are we still a developing team. (Honestly, my assessment was at the beginning of the year that we are more likely fighting for the 8-11 spots than we are the 12-16 or 1-7. I think we are an improved team, but still not deep enough and still young and young teams have the ups and downs you've witnessed in 2 weeks of play)

2- Do we need to make a move for a dman? By T-giving, we will see what we have on the blueline (Will Staios be enough or do we need more? Will DeHaan progress at the Bridge to be ready to join [no need to rush] like Travis did or not?)

3- Does this team play like a typical "young team"? What I mean by that is do they:
*play to the level of their competition rather than play to their potential consistently? So far, I've seen them playing to their competition. That is common amongst young teams and it is something good teams outgrow. We've seen good games v. the Rags and Wild and Tampa...better teams. We've seen pitiful efforts v. Florida twice (they suck) and a poor one against Tampa in Tampa...didn't look ready to play.
*Make the same mistakes? Tough to tell. The other day v. the Rags I asked if that was Travis H's worst game as a pro. I haven't seen him make those same mistakes since so it looks like it was just an outlier which is what I hoped. But Comeau doesn't seem to learn.

Those are some of the things I'm looking to see from this team. We've gotten solid goaltending so far and with the exception of opening night and the Tampa game, we were in every game. Even with the piss poor effort in Fla, they could have stolen that game. Another sign that Florida is still a bad team and those "pundits" who claimed Fla would make a run for the playoffs must be on crack. They have no legit goalie, no forwards to speak of and an aging D. Then to boot, they traded Booth and got nothing for him. LOL I wish we had dealt for him. I would have given Fla Comeau for Booth in a heartbeat and they still would have gotten more than they got from Vancouver.
