Title: Who is the Captain?

gdprof27 - July 13, 2011 01:12 PM (GMT)
If it's not already, it will soon be time to name the Islanders Captain for 2011-2012. I want to know your thoughts about who you think should be the on-ice and locker room leader for this franchise.

I am including JT in this because it just seems natural and, assuming the four alternates are considered...

Webb20 - July 13, 2011 02:27 PM (GMT)
Tough questions.

Do you give it JT? He's young, but he'll most certainly be a leader on this team for a long long time. Pitt gave it to Crosby early on.

Streit? Another tough call. Not here for an entire year last season. Has 2 years left on his contract. Soft spoken, but does lead by example. Would he be the first swiss born nhl capt?

KO. Look at by everyone as a leader, but is he truly someone everyone will respect and listen too, including the officials?

I don't think Frans will be captain, doesn't seem to me to be that outspoken type who can fire up the troops if needed.

MacDonald, maybe in a couple of years he'd be a good one, same can be said about Hamonic (I think he'll turn out to be a better choice than AMac.)

What about Moulson?

stevedepot - July 13, 2011 02:39 PM (GMT)
Everyone knows I have an issue with Okposo.
Not because I don;t respect his talent/potential.
It's timing + pressure.
In pressure situations he tends to over handle the puck and play with head down
often times missing guys wide open for a pass.
You cannot have a leader leading by example that way. With added pressure of a C he might regress vs improve his all around game which he did last season as he became a BETTER ALL AROUND player.

Frans Nielsen? That is I4C's job to explain why he shouldn't.

No disrespect to anyone else on that list but f Streit wouldn't mind it for one year, maybe
making Tavares the captain is the right move...
after they announce his contract extension.

OlTimeHockey - July 13, 2011 03:29 PM (GMT)
Whoever steps it up a couple of notched when we're late in a game down by one, they belong on the list.

Then ask who appears hard nosed vs. soft/mellow (eliminated Moulson).

Then who does the team most visually run after every goal or at game's end.

Then and finally, who shows the most during practices?

I like Hamonic down the line but Tavares also qualifies. Streit could be a good short term one. I think the best one isn't on this list yet. I want it to be someone who gets the most respect in practice.

Bexlyspeed - July 13, 2011 03:40 PM (GMT)
there is going to be enough pressure on the youngsters this year, give it to Streit and in 2 or three years Mr. T or Okposo will be ready/

Probably the best short term solution right there!

If recent history is a guide, let's find someone who'll be dealt at the deadline. Therefore it'll be Jurcina this year and Streit next year if there's no lockout/strike.

Or injured all the time.

I second / third / whatever.

Let the young guys show a little more then transition from Streit IF one of them is ready.

Or maybe we'll have a blockbuster, C-worthy addition in a year or two to take over....

THEDRIVE4FIVE - July 13, 2011 05:35 PM (GMT)
Give it to Streit now. Let Okposo find his game, and show that he is willing to physically defend his teammates. It will be Okposo once Streit leaves. Tavares isn't the right guy.

They usually announce it right after camp.

Mulefan - July 13, 2011 09:07 PM (GMT)
I would give it to Okposo.

3POTI - July 13, 2011 09:15 PM (GMT)
I've touted kyle for the C..so, ofcourse I voted for streit to get the C..hmm, makes sense...I'm thinking also along the lines with some that maybe JT will eventually be captain of the team...unless ofcourse if he leaves then its kyle...or bailey...unless they give up on him..then amac...though he might be involved in a major deal in two years..then I go with doug weight..

THEDRIVE4FIVE - July 14, 2011 01:24 AM (GMT)
I think Travis Hamonic will be in the running when Streit leaves. Dark horse.

OlTimeHockey - July 14, 2011 06:33 AM (GMT)
E from Entourage. First captain to war sneakers on the bench.

Second...Forgot, Doug Weight last year was on the bench for a spell.

stevedepot - July 14, 2011 02:01 PM (GMT)
Whoever they get to wear the C better play like an A or our final grade will be an F.

Teams in transition and young, I think the committee works and gives you time to see which steps into the role naturally.

I keep going back to Detroit with Yzerman and Pittsburgh with Crosby. It worked out pretty well in both instances (minus the concussion).

Whatever the case, it promotes stability and reinforces the idea that we will be here for a long time. With that in mind, I voted for JT. He is our superstar. If he signs long-term he will be our leader.

I'd go with JT if he signs here long term...There's been way too much turnover in the Captancy over the last few years. Whoever the next Captain is has to be here for more than 2-3 years.

I guess if he signs a long term deal like Sid did before they gave him the C thats fine.

However there are a few successful teams that rote the A's Sabers, Devils and Blues but also there are some unsuccessful teams.

rifleman22 - July 15, 2011 04:26 PM (GMT)
Give it to Tavares. Make it HIS team. Not now, RIGHT NOW. Fits the mold of a young, up and coming team. Shows young available talent this is a place to consider. Gives him the chance to step up in the room and be the leader. As a long term captain, I believe it will influence his decison (when it comes) to choose to stay here. Nothing bad about it.

Streit? Is he even gonna be ready? And what if he blows a tire again? Not a strong enough voice in the room. "A" at best.

KO? Cannot be invisible for stretches and is more suited to the "A" as well. No strong voice, either.

The rest: Hamonic, McDonald etc. have enough to worry about to get their games to the next level. Too much pressure.

JT is the current and long term solution, IMHO.

Islander4cups - July 15, 2011 11:04 PM (GMT)
No Captain.

Has anyone on this roster done anything to deserve a C yet?

Streit needs to worry about showing he can still play.

Okposo needs to start living up to expectations without having more heaped on him.

Baily--- uh, no.

AMac...nope. Not for another 5 years and he can have an A.

JT- not close. Let him worry about developing his game without carrying a team.

Just have three guys wear an "A" each night. No need for a designated captain.

Keep it that way the entire season and see how it plays out.

If we have a true captain amongst the bunch, they will emerge this season and earn a C

I'm guessing you want Franzy?

OlTimeHockey - July 16, 2011 05:49 PM (GMT)
Worrying about the "C" stitching is a little foolish, now, anyways.

We can worry about C's when we take care of W's first.

Or UFA's, RFA's, DP's, D, 1LRW's, CEO's and GAA's.
