Here are some notes on Written Roleplaying Etiquette for the Written roleplaying section of the board (i.e., Local Tavern and other such boards).
1. Mechanics Count. Be considerate and make your posts legible. A spelling error or two is ok, but try to fix any glaring errors before posting. If spelling and grammar aren't your forte, type it up in a word document and run spell check. This works the same as the rest of the board.
2. Tense. Please write in third person past tense. He jumped. She said. Not I jumped, or she says.
3. No Godmodding. Do not post other people's actions. This is the biggy. Never anticipate how someone else's character will respond. Sometimes people will give you permission, but this is rare. Never post someone else's dialogue (unless you're reposting what they've already posts with your character's reactions), their reactions to your actions, or their taking damage. For instance:
"Mallowyn punched Fren in the face, knocking a tooth loose,"
would be incorrect.
"Mallowyn swung her fist towards Fren's face,"
is much better, then the other character could respond with,
"The force of her fist against his jaw was concussive, leading Fren to spit out a tooth knocked loose by the impact."
Always give the other person a chance to react by leaving it to them to specify whether or not an attack lands. On the other hand, when someone attacks you and is courteous enough not to say they stabbed you, but rather that they lunged towards you, don't take advantage of it and be invincible. The point of written RPing is to tell a story, and sometimes losing can be more interesting. Thou art not special. (Unless you're Sibbie - he's very special.)
4. Frequency. You don't have to post in a thread every time someone new posts, especially if there are numerous people in the thread. If there's nothing new for you to react to, well, there's nothing really for you to post. Likewise, if you're in a fight and your opponent hasn't posted, don't post again until they have. If you're in a thread with just one other person, then yes, it's nice to try to post as frequently as you can so they don't have to wait, but quality is valued over quantity, and I know as a roleplayer I'd rather that someone waited a few hours to write a decent post, than whip off a sentence on their way to school. It's really a judgement thing of can you versus should you.
