"No, I don't suppose I can do much more than hang on and enjoy the ride. The pantheon's plan worked out, and no reasonable person could complain about the results. That's the way things work in this domain of ours, I guess."
RackO'Reefe looked at Taidrick, then at the capital building. For a moment, he looked concerned, but then shrugged and smiled.
"Well Taidrick, I've been doing some thinking, and I've come to a conclusion. I think I've done my part in influencing this world. It's time for me to just watch how you and the others do things, for better or for worse. Time to let things progress without my influence."
The trickster imp's voice wavered for a moment.
"This world of ours has been a major part of my life for a long time now, but to continue to give leadership when there are other capable folks out there would just be selfish. I'm ready to retire my position as one of the movers and shakers of the multiverse, Taidrick. It's not my place to tell you guys how I want things to happen anymore."
RackO'Reefe sniffed and wiped his eyes before speaking again, and looked at Taidrick with a happy (though mournful) expression.
"But don't you think for a second that you'll never see me again. This place is too important for me to just forget about it. No sir, I intend to stick around for as long as possible. Who knows? I might find myself playing the part of one of these mortal folk every now and then. It all depends on what the world needs. Just take good care of things like I know you will, all right?
"It's been a blast over the course of these years, my friend. And I know that you'll do fine with this world of ours. I'll be seeing you."
With a loud POP!, a series of fireworks launched themselves into the air, making the shape of a smiling face in the sky. When the smoke cleared, RackO'Reefe was gone, off on his next adventure. A refreshing breeze blew by, and his voice was heard once more.
"Goodbye everyone... and thank you for everything."
