He stood, once again, on a dark beach, between a slow boat on a still river, and a place where there once was an open door. The boatman stopped at the shore, and the bars that had prevented Nathan from taking the ferry rose once again, blocking his path. He could not return to the world, nor could he pass on. The boatman stood, waiting.

Rusty, fragile chains shook as a being of fire and malice roared. Nathan knew it well. Its name was Badril, and it was who he had been. Who he still was, but wasn't anymore. It wished to consume him. It wished to join him. It wished to die at his hand. The chains that bound it shattered, and Badril and Nathan met.

Their souls mixed, fire and ice swirling together, destroying each other, fleeing each other, becoming each other. The souls of each merged, and Nathan and Badril were gone.

A man stood on the beach, whole again. He looked at the path to the boatman, blocked by iron bars. He wished to travel with the boatman to where he was supposed to go. He would not be denied.

The bars that blocked his way to the boatman crumbled to dust and blew away into the void. The man walked to the ferry and took the boatman's hand.

The boat traveled down the river, the boatman and the passenger looking ahead to their destination, finally leaving the dark shores and bitter memories of chains and shackles behind.

Rin - end of year 2012

The End of the Beginning

Rin looked down at the little girl standing beside her “Well we’ll just have to find some food then,” She smiled at her, trying to reassure her that everything was alright “Come on,” She said, taking the girl’s hand and leading her off the battlefield and into the forest beyond.

“There should be a tavern nearby somewhere, I can smell wood burning,” They had been walking for hours, without food or water, and the little girl could barely stay on her feet. She stumbled a little and fell. “Rin-Rin I’m tired” she said.
“The Tavern is just up ahead, sweetie, we’re almost there. Only a little further, and then we can rest.”
“No,” protested the girl. “I’m tired; I’m staying here.”
Rin walked back to where she sat and knelt down beside her. “If we keep going, I’ll buy you all the chocolate cake you can eat” She hoped that wasn’t more than a couple pieces, that’s all the money she had and she wanted to keep some just in case, but it didn’t matter because the girl didn’t budge. She did, however, perk up a little more and Rin worked with that. She picked up the small girl, which was difficult, for the girl was almost as big as Rin. “What? Don’t you want any cake?” she teased, as she made her way toward the tavern, the girl safe in her arms.
“Rin-Rin! Put me down! I don wanna go.” She squealed, but didn’t squirm in Rin’s arms. They broke through the stand of trees that had separated them from the tavern. Then the girl did squirm and Rin let her down.
The tavern was completely destroyed. There were bits of wall and ceiling scattered all over the clearing. The main building had flames licking up the remaining wood that used to make the walls and there was pieces of flesh scattered around too, most of it around the original structure, although there was some farther away too. Rin looked around in horror “What happened here?” she thought. But she didn’t have time to come up with an answer because the little girl wasn’t next to her as she had assumed. She panicked running back into the woods. Her breath came in uneven mouthfuls as she ran feverishly through the forest. She heard screaming and pushed her-self to run faster.
I can’t lose her!
She entered a copse of birch trees and saw the little girl lying on the ground, in the grass.
“TRYSTAN!” Rin shouted and ran to the girl; she was covered in blood. As she approached she heard someone running through the trees. Rin’s head snapped away from the dying girl and to the goblin fleeing into the forest. She stood and hefted a knife she had picked up on the battle field, holding it by the point. Lining up the shot took a few second, and then the knife tore through the air as Rin threw it. The tip buried itself in the goblin’s back and he fell to the ground with a howl. Immediately Rin turned back to Trystan. There was a stab wound clear through her chest and blood had started to pool under her body, but she was still alive. Rin reached into her bag to find the life potion Nathan had given her, but when she pulled out the bottle it was empty. “No! no, no no” Tears started to run down her face “NO!” she threw her hand against the ground next to Trystan, smashing the bottle and slashing her palm to shreds. She paid it no attention however. The girl’s wound was beyond her ability to heal, but she would try, she wouldn’t give up, not on this, not on Trystan. Reaching into her bag once again she pulled out some bandages and pressed them over the wound in Trystan’s chest. The pressure caused the girl to cough up blood and become conscious once again. She screamed and started crying. Rin cradled Trystan’s head in her lap and stroked her face “Shhhhh, it’ll be alright. You’ll be alright” she lied.
As her energy dwindled she stopped crying and looked up at Rin. “Rin-Rin?”
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Take care of Al” Rin nodded and laughed a little through the tears. Then Trystan closed her eyes and stopped moving; stopped breathing.
“Trystan? Trystan?” Rin shook her lifeless body. For a little while she had believed her own lie. Rin’s tears were renewed as she came to the realization that Trystan was eternally gone. She hugged the body to her, then set it down in the grass, under the shade of the birch trees, whose leaves cast a green light down to the forest floor. It was the most beautiful place; Rin wished she could have had the time to enjoy it.

Rin walked back to the clearing with the destroyed tavern like the dead walked to their graves. She felt nothing, saw nothing. Her hands pushed the low hanging branches away without having to be told. Her feet moved of their own accord, working for an inner purpose that Rin had no knowledge of in her conscious mind. But, they didn’t do the best job. She tripped over a broken, charred piece of wood and fell. She stayed laying there, not having any reason to right herself.
The man that found her was the tavern keeper.
“Hello? Hello? Little girl, are you alright?” Rin barely heard him and didn’t respond. Growing more concerned the man bent down and shook Rin’s shoulder.
“Hey! Hello?”
Rin’s hand shot up and grasped the man’s throat. Jumping up, she pushed him against a nearby tree. Taken by surprise the man could not resist. “What are you doing here?! Do you work for him?!” Rin shouted at the man.
“What? Work for who? I’m just the tavern keeper,” he choked out from behind Rin’s hand on his throat. There was a long pause and then the hand on the man’s throat released him and Rin fell back to the ground and few feet away from the man, her head in her hands.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to do that, I thought you might be someone else.”
The man, trying to sympathize with the little girl who had just attacked him, said nothing. Rin looked up at him and, for the first time, really saw him. He was a slim man, wearing an apron; he did look like a tavern keeper. “What happened here?” she said looking around at all the broken wood and dead flesh scattered about the clearing.
“A goblin attack,” the man answered bluntly.
“Goblins destroyed the tavern like this?” she asked, surprised. Goblins didn’t seem like they could do that much damage.
The man hesitated “ Well…not exactly. There was a…demon I guess, that turned into an angel. He destroyed the tavern, but he was really nice about it, offered to have his men rebuild it for m-” He was rambling by the end of his explanation.
Rin jumped up and pushed the man back against the tree, interrupting him “A demon that turned into an angel? Are you sure?”
The man was frantic again “Yes! Yes I’m sure that’s what he was”
“Which way did he go?”
The man pointed off into the trees opposite where Rin had come from. Rin took off running, yelling thank you back to the very confused man as she went.

When she caught up to him it was night; three days since “The Tavern”. She walked through the empty rows of tents wondering if everyone was asleep, or if they were gone. Reaching the center of the encampment, she saw the big tent that was the temporary home of the Bandit King. There was a lit torch on one of the tent poles. She walked right in not caring about courtesy; she had a job to do. Pulling back the flap of fabric that served as a door, she discovered no one on the other side. There was just a large wooden table surrounded by chairs and a few small bookcases. Not knowing what else to do, Rin went in. She walked around the table a few times and hovered by one of the book cases. One of the books stood out to her; she took it off the shelf and let it fall open in her hands. The page it opened to had a picture of a man seemingly being propelled upward by some unknown force. The caption read The art of practical magic in use. Rin wondered what the book meant by “practical magic”. Before she could leaf through the book and find out, the flap of the tent opened and a man walked in, startling Rin so she dropped the book. She left it on the ground and looked the tall man in the eye “Hello Aaden” she said.
“Rin,” Aaden nodded, picking up the book she had dropped and replacing it on the shelf. “You should be more careful, these books belonged to my father and are precious to me.”
Aaden moved to the head of the table and sat down. “Please sit.” He motioned to the chair next to him. “So what brings you here?”
Rin slammed her hands down on the oak table. “You know why I’m here!” she yelled, angered that he was so calm about such a crucial matter. “He won! He brought down the wall; we failed…” She fell to the floor, her rage and anger depleted. “…and he killed Trystan…” Tears fell to floor, creating small dark patches in the dirt. Aaden got up from his chair and crouched next to Rin, putting a hand on her shoulder. She looked up at him. She felt like he understood her, more than anyone else had. He didn’t treat her like a child, like so many others had, or like something to fear, like her parents had. “She was just a child, Aaden. How could he do that to a child? She was my little sister…”
Aaden’s gaze drifted off Rin and onto something she couldn’t see. Rin recognized that look as the one she got when thinking of Ventrillos. “Because he is a vile and immoral fiend, that shall find no place to rest except in Hell.” Rin saw his other hand clench into a fist then relax as he focused back on her. “We’ll find him, Rin, and when we do I promise you, we will end him.”
