You have to understand the time period, the world is basicly in a state of chaos when the game starts. Of course formations are going to mean less in this game, the type of warfare is much different then the warfare in RTW. For instance units are heavier, especialy mounted knights, to tell the truth, a group of fully armored mounted knights could probaly destory a spartan phalanx, so think of what it does to a bunch of untrained peasants who picked up a spear and a shield. I see this game as more of a Satire on this time period because nothing really made sense durring this time. I dunno, I enjoyed it, I played the Turks first, using hordes of horse archers then eventualy using organised lines of janissaries and cannons. I also took over the world with the mongols which was entertaining. anyways, i enjoyed it, it was fun and good for the time period it was in.
peace.

the swiss pikemen put the knights of the period to sleep forever...
Pike = phalanx like = no cavalry stands a chance....
cataphracts and armoured knights are development starting with the cavalty revolution 4 - 2 BC (Alexanders companions for instance)
besides the pikemen the british longbow did the rest to abolish knights from the battlefields... --> Check battle of Agrigourt

true the swiss pikemen were pretty badass. They stand up to early knights pretty well but once plate mail is invented no way, Take Gothic heavy horsemen for instance, the only thing really invented next to take on armor like that is gun powder. In early medevil times the long bows could take out knights but this game goes to late medevil early ren. which means bows become more and more useless as better armor comes out. Even a row of wooden pikes couldnt stand to a group of charging angry germans in full plate mail. Crossbows put down heavy armor decently but only at short range. If you guys want hardcore medevil war play Medevil 1 but this is advanced pre-rennessaince warfare which is different, you cant rely on archers, even upgraded archers to take on full plate. if you took a pike and tried to stab full plate it wouldn't peirce to the point of deadly penetration so of course your spear walls are gonna get trampled by armored horses. Anyways I love Medevil 2 its brilliant for the time period.

just give them a starting settlement such as baghdad and put them on the unlocked list. I love the mongols, Ever since Shogon I have played them in every strategy game. Though I would love to see a TW game focused on the mongols, they took over so much land and basicly brought guns and eastern philosophy to the underdeveloped europeans. You envy your spartans in how they train and are the ultimate warriors, if you want a highly trained multi-functional warrior that never runs its your basic mongolian horseman. Trained to fight on Horseback with bow, sword, lance and mace and on foot with bow, sword, lance and mace. On the ground acting as both archery and Infanty troops and on horse acting as both heavy and missle...
peace
