Since the Wii U is set to debut later this year, Sony recently announced that it wasn't a good idea for it to be the 'last' console to enter the next gen race. What does this actually mean? We still don't know much about the PS4. It's also rumored that Bethesda (bugthesda) is trying to hire out new programmers for next-gen consoles.

The XBOX 720's cpu and processing is most likely already set in stone. However, Microsoft recently announced that it may be possible that it wouldn't even have a disc drive, that it could go digital download and/or a flash type system like the DS, 3DS, and PS Vita are using.

Flash ram/memory has come a long way from the Sega Saturn (action replay, batteryless ram carts) days, where flash was so slow that it wouldn't be fast enough to run a game. Now days, it seems like flash carts can not only have non-writable areas but also writable areas, not only for save games but for downloadable updates.

We all know sony and microsoft have had overheating issues in their systems, and flash would probably be the way to instantly take out a lot of heat, from the dvd-rom. Any mechanical moving part, like dvd drives, not only wears out gears and lasers but also creates heat.

What I'm wondering about is whether or not flash is really at an affordable price level for games that require a lot of space. IMO, they need to have at least 25gb carts to start and as high as 50gb in the console's future.

If the XBOX 720 is digital download only, I will be the first to bow out of getting one at all. That would push many people to the PS4.

Not sure if being last is a bad thing, normally you have more time to get a powerful system with new components and more time to work on a launch library.

Well, Steve, as you know, most rumors, speculation, or ideas don't ever make it into the final design when it comes to the video gaming industry. It's luck to get even ten percent of the information correct. I don't think the information is always actually false but rather ideas are shot around with the design and development teams, and information goes viral. It doesn't matter if the scenario is just, "what if," or "let's think about doing it this way."

There are also a lot of people, many claiming to be insiders and knowing how the gaming industry works, making predictions based on the so-called 'in the know' knowledge, but in many cases, it's the lack thereof.

Microsoft just announced that there will be no XBOX 720 announcements at next E3, which means that the 720 probably will not be released until 2014. They're probably going to focus on Halo 4.

With The Wii U coming out this year, Microsoft's recent announcement, and Sony's announcements that they didn't want to release the next gen console last, we can only conclude that the XBOX 720 will be the last this time. What does this mean for Microsoft? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Sony's PS3 finally sold more consoles than the 360, despite the 360 coming out a year before the PS3. If the PS4 comes out a year before the 720, most likely the 720 will lose the console wars the next round.

To be on top between 2005 and 2012 is a huge honor for Microsoft, whether they know it or not. A combination of red ring of death problems and the obsolete pay-to-play online system is really what plagued the 360 and lost Microsoft's credibility in the gaming market. For those of us who loved the original XBOX, it's also hard to have invested so much time and money into the original games, be promised backwards compatibility support, only to have it dropped and have only half of the games working.

I believe 2011 was the first year the 360 outsold everyone globally.

CNN today (3pm EST) had a report about the PS4, saying that the system will be released most likely in 2013 and the big kicker, will not play used games. They say it could use codes that would be tied to your PSN account. I hope that fans hear this and have a massive outcry over it. If this is the way the 720 and ps4 is going, I guess I'll end up with a Wii U.

Even more 'bleak' news about the future of console systems.

say hello to the brave new world of consoles

This could be the end of game rental shops, game mail-in companies, ebay game re-selling, and of course small-town video game trading businesses. In the above article, it states that game resellers (like gamestop) may actually refuse to sell new PS4/720 games, which would mean only big-box companies (best buy, wally world, target) would sell next-gen games. In this scenario, those companies would probably do well in the market, something that best buy may need to actually stay afloat at all.

I'm not a fan of best buy (any more) or gamestop, but in these scenarios, there is no happy medium. With the TV technology we have now, I'll revert back to 100% PC gaming and send a big F'U to both systems. There are just too many fans that aren't in the IPOD/IPAD/IPHONE/KINDLE-era way of thinking.

Despite Wii U's optional game download feature, I still think they will come out on top in the next round, in part because of their ability to play "high density" discs. Also, this system is finally labeled for the hardcore gamers- the opposite of Wii's appeal to casual gamers. Good for the big N. This is on my "maybe" list. I'm watching for how they market their game library by the time of launch.

I must say- Batman, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, Skyrim expansion, Darksiders expansion, Assassin's Creed 3, Mass Effect 3, and the rest of the Wii U launch titles seem very impressive.

Some would probably argue that Nintendo is just now catching up to PS3 and 360 specs and in regards to online play.

I would argue that I really don't care.

Nintendo's devotion to making games fun and not worrying about being the "baddest mofo on the planet" still resonates with their fans (besides me) to this day. Wii U should be a monster hit, especially for its hardcore-oriented approach to entering the eighth generation.

e3.nintendo.com has the ongoing details of what's in store for Wii U later this year and what they will do to expand on 3DS. Both units are showing a lot of promise as of now. Check it out. Share your input.
