Amazon today has changed their price for the HD-A3 HD-DVD players to $125, which include 2 free in the box movies and 5 free mail-in movies, a $140 value for the movies alone, and it also includes free shipping.

Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HD-A3-720p-1...9&creative=9325

Now, I'm sure some people are going to even wonder if it's worth this, because of the warner announcement before CES 08. I suppose it's up to each and every person. If you like the movies available now and in the coming months, then I believe it's worth getting. The 5 free mail-in offer expires on 2/28/08. After that, you may not see any more promotions like this.

The prices of these players have decreased several times over the last few weeks. In the last week alone, the price went from around $149 to $129 to $128, and now, $125. Will it keep going down, or will amazon deplete its stock of players and just quit selling them any time soon? You can always wait and see if they put them on clearance for $99, but by the time it reaches that price, there will probably be thousands lined up to get them, because last time they had a 1-day $99 event, over 90,000 people bought one.

Or if you like the over 400 movies available in North America on HD-DVD, or would consider importing some of the 1000 movies from international sites, it may be a good deal for you then too. I can see movies getting cheaper and cheaper, at least for a short while.

I'm considering getting one in the next few weeks if they still have them in stock, not really because of the movies, which are falling in price, but to have a backup hd-dvd player for the future. Anything with moving parts or lasers eventually goes out.

C'mon dude. Everytime I ordered something from Amazon, they give me the wrong item.

i.e.
SNES controller- got a broken NES controller
SNES ac adapter- same bad result- a malfunctioning NES ac adapter

I'm through with them.

Costco still has HD DVD players for cheaper than Amazon does.
By the way, will they even read dual layer discs?

Hey, take it or leave it, I'm just making use of this board.

I've actually had a few minor problems with amazon orders as well, but all in all, not many. When I order from amazon, I try to order it directly from amazon and not through one of their many re-sellers. Any one can get an amazon reseller account, which can be unfortunate, because many people on various auction and re-seller sites just don't test stuff or don't make sure all of the accessories are complete or even for the right item.

Costco.... There aren't any costcos around here, although I've heard about it and futureshop often. Futureshop, from what I can tell, is actually the Canadian version of bestbuy. I went to the costco website, and they list their HD-D3 HD-DVD player at $139. The HD-D3 and HD-A3 players are the same player, but the D3 is the canadian version. So, I'm guessing their website is in Canada. Who knows how much the players are in the USA?

It really doesn't matter though. If you can get a player for any cheaper, with the 7 free HD-DVDs, it's all good. My main concern is that Toshiba may be flushing out their last remaining stock, and if we wait and wait for even more deals, there just may not be any left to buy.

I'm also leery of buying from a place like ebay, where people say "5 free dvd offer" or "7 free dvds" because it's very likely that Toshiba won't honor an ebay receipt for a mail-in offer.

dual layer discs: yes, this hd-a3 should play dual layer discs... I've got the HD-A2 and xbox 360 hd-dvd players, and they play them fine. Considering the HD-A3 is the newer generation, it should do just as good if not better than those two.

Just to give you a new option, I'll finish up on the subject of costco and then drop it.

I realize by your older posts that you live where you are often forced to shop online- costco is worldwide and perhaps you just saw the canadian model online. I saw one for $120 with two free HD DVDs at a Montgomery Costco that just opened, but I don't think the city a Costco is in makes any difference. It is a worldwide wholesaler, so they are all over the U.S. I think they have cheaper and better stuff than Sam's Club- including that player you've been mentioning. Where I am now, if I get a chance to, I"d have to drive an hour to the nearest one, but it's definitely worth it.

With that said, Amazon has been giving me problems because there are too many resellers trying to take Amazon's place, and that does not help them at all. I remember when it was a single company devoted to shipping the best products in the fastest time- pure efficiency- my how times are a changin'!

Like I said, if you can get one cheaper, that's great. I looked up store locations of costcos, and there is one about 50 miles from me. With the price of gas, it wouldn't be worth it for me personally, but if it were nearby, like many people, I'd definitely buy it at costco for $120, as long as I could get the 5 free mail-in ones as well.

Also, I found a 9 free promotion at bestbuy, but at $149, for the HD-A3. That includes the two in box items (300, bourne identity), any two hd-dvds under $35 on their website, and then the 5 free mail-in ones. Pretty much $25 more than the first promotion, but if you get some new releases that aren't on clearance anywhere else, then it may be worth it.

Yea, that was in there ad this week. I haven't really had problems with Amazon but I do think Amazon was MUCH better before the resellers were allowed. It kind of has deminished the quality of their business.

Just a note: the amazon price went back up to $129. So, it must have only been a one day sale or so.

The price of this hd-dvd player fluctuates but is around $126-127.

In other news, I've pretty much decided to not get a spare HD-DVD player right now. If you look at the coming hd-dvd releases in North America, early 2008, there are just a handful of them.

Importing HD-DVD movies is still viable, but for how long? I was really wanting to buy the RE Trilogy (RE Extinction coming out on the 14th of this month) on this format, but the movie would be around $43, while the blu-ray version is out now for $29.99.

Yes, it would suck having to come up with $400+ for a blu-ray player, but it'll eventually happen, and I can only hope that the players come down another $150+ by the time I purchase one.
