The Black Lake The first-year students are met at the station by Hagrid (or another teacher), who carries a lantern and escorts them down a dark, steep, narrow path that ends at the lake, where they get their first glimpse of Hogwarts. A fleet of little boats takes the students across the lake. As the boats near the cliff on which Hogwarts stands, they sail through an ivy curtain that hides a wide opening in the towering cliff. The boats then sail along a dark tunnel right underneath the castle to an underground harbor with a shore full of rocks and pebbles (SS6).

The Forbidden Forest The Forbidden Forest lies east of Hogwarts castle. The forest has thick groves of trees that block out the light. Beech, oak, pine, sycamore, and yew trees are found in the forest, along with underbrush such as knotgrass and thorns (SS13, 15; CS15; OP21, 28, 30). There are brooks, clearings, and wide paths to follow, but dense vegetation grows on both sides of the paths.

Qudditch Pitch To get to the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch, the students have to cross the lawn and pass the lake. The Quidditch pitch is a large, grassy, oval field, 500 feet long by 180 feet wide. Three 50-foot-tall poles with hoops on the ends stand at both ends of the field, and a scoring area is also marked off at each end. The center of the pitch has a circle where the Quidditch balls are thrown into the air when the match begins. The Golden Snitch and the Bludgers are enchanted to stay within the boundaries of the pitch (QA).

The Whomping Willow This is to the south of the castle, next to the Forbidden Forest. It was planted when Remus Lupin attended the school, to cover for his lycanthropy. It is a particularly dangerous plant, and will attack anyone who comes near it, especially if they crash their car into it. According to Professor Snape, it is also rather valuable.
