A boys story

A Boys Story

A young boy stands in his class with a box on the seat,
its show and tell the young boy brought in some thing neat.
The teacher smiled and said "what have you there?"
The boy looked down without despair.

The boy said

"What I have here is the last thing my dad had, before he died."
The classmates just sat and watched, for the boy didn't cry.
"It was his job, as you can see,
that took his life away from me."

"Though I can not see him, I know he is the there,
for he is an angel, floating in air.
We used to go out and eat ice cream each day,
we used to shoot some hoops, or even just play."

"We went shopping in downtown stores,
and even going to beaches and shores.
We went trick or treating,
and boy we always made a beating"

"When Christmas came around,
we would put decorations on the grounds."

"He took me to his job, and let me play with his gear,
and when he had to go, he left with out any fear."

The boy then hesitated,

"But, like all stories, his came to an end,
fate is not flexible, for it can not bend."
And from the box came a helmet made of leather,
though it was heavy, the kid made it look light as a feather.

The boy began to speak loudly,
not as to be heard, but to say it proudly.
"My father was in a group of brothers,
a group that would risk everything to save the life of others."

"He was a fire fighter, a true American hero,
he did "it" for nothing, being paid zero."

"He went into that fire that august day,
not realizing he would pass away.
Though he saved those children in room 44,
the building collapsed, he was crushed from ceiling to floor."

The teacher and students sat there with tears in their eyes,
what more could they do but sit there and cry.
His love for his father was so great it had no price,
for he was proud of his father's ultimate sacrifice.

He put the helmet back in the box, and walked to his seat,
for he really had shown his class something that was neat.

maybe in like september-november time frame. i wrote this in the summer

Ah, I have a pretty bad memory... so that might be why I don't completely remember it.

Had three snow days in a row. I was grossly unprepared to present.
