To Be A Thief.

(A/L/V - anything goes, as long as it’s sensible and reasonable. Remember members can be as young as 13)

---

Genre : medieval (same timeline as RedWall - swords/arrow/cross-bows) ... with some fantasy thrown in there.

Backing Story : After a fire breaks out, Selena is forced to go into the trade of thieves along with her family at a very young age.
After twelve years of stealing for their survival, Selena is a very good and cunning thief and has learned every trick in the book … well almost all the tricks.
Now living on her own, away from her family, she doesn’t have to worry about her family and only steals for herself.

Character(s) : Selena is an eight-teen year old young lady, living on her own and stealing from everyone to survive. Striking mostly at night, her black hair and clothes adding to her advantage. Her deep blue eyes, having adapted to the darkness of night.

( add in you’re character. Everyone is up for grabs ... cept Selena)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a beautiful summer’s night. One could see the stars for miles and the moon was so bright in the sky to light one’s way.
That one was Selena, dressed in loose black clothing to conceal herself. Breaking into a shop to steal some food. By now it was routine for her, but something was off tonight for some reason. Something in the air didn’t feel right at all, but she had to go on with her plan if she wanted to eat.
Looking around, all is still and all that can be heard is the crickets in the grass, but she could swear that someone was watching her. Maybe it was just her nerves although this would have been the first time she was so nervous that she felt this odd sensation.
Creeping up to the shop’s door, Selena takes out a small pouch of pick-locks. Picking one, she puts the rest back and starts on breaking the lock.
"Again, tell me what the hell we're doing here?" A harsh, gruff voice asked its companions.
"Well, we just need supplies," A strong but nice, almost bore voice answered.
A third, obvoiously younger from its pitch, yawned, "Well, let's hope they've got a good place to sleep." It yawned again.
A fourth and final voice laughed, "Well then, we'd better hurry!" This voice was also youthful, but not as young as the previous, but it was soft and pleasent.
"Then MOVE!" The first shouted.
--
Savorak Myor rubed at his temples. He was getting tired too, as well as the rest of his party.
He stopped at raised his torch, taking a good look at everyone.
Two human, himself included, and a duo of squirrels, one of them clinging on the other.
Quite odd.
He first checked the other human. He was only slightly younger than himself, but from the tears and raggedness from his clothes he was a very well seasoned adventurer. Savorak nodded. This was one of the few men he respected, and his respect was almost impossible to gain.
The other human's name was Durran Orro, an adventuerer, lending his skills whenever, and to whomever he wanted. Thankfully, he was kind and benevolent, and such, earned the title "Errant", and bards and villagers everywhere knew him.
He didn't wear as much armor as Savorak did, only an old breastplate, and his only weapon was his spear. If Durran needed anything else, he was skilled enough to get it. He could make, steal, or buy almost anything.
'The king of all trades' the bards would say.
One wouldn't think that if they first laid eyes on him. His burgundy was hair cut and hung almost lazily over his eyes with the rest tied back. His torso completly covered by his armor, while the sleeves from his shirt (which was colored the same as his hair) trailed out, the cuffs frayed off completly.
His trousers were also as worn as the rest of his possessions; the only thing being relatively new was his boots.
His brown eyes caught Savorak's own deep blue ones staring at him, "Well, what's the matter?"
Savorak huffed, "Its nothing. It's obvious we rest. Hurry up now."
and with that, he turned on his heel and began walking.
---
Korro, the owner of the most youthful voice, and the one clinging to the other squirrel almost fell flat giggling. "He's...so...weird!" He managed between bouts of laughter.
Marr, the other squirrel, hushed his friend, "Now, don't be so mean Korro."
Korro took a few deep breaths, then calmed down, "Haha..ha....Okay."
Durran laughed, "How do you do that young friend? I understand that you do care for him now, seeing his family is gone, but, hahaha, not even I listened to my own with such zeal!"
Marr blushed at the comment, "Thank you."
Korro was considered the most annoying of the group, but he did have his uses.
Dispite having no family for quite some time, he managed to survive on his own, and would often impart some of his knowlage to the others when they were in a fix.
And, he had a talent with magik, something the others did not.
Korro's magik was not destructive like the sorrcerers, nor was it grand and purposefull as wizardy. His were little tricks and ablities that made everyone's life easier. Like for now, for instance.
A small globe of light was following his closely, serving as a light for the rear, which could also flare brightly to blind attackers, giving the others a few precious seconds to attack freely.
And, in Savorak's case, a single second meant death for all.
Durran was almost as skilled as Savorak, but he favored grace and subtly, relying on his skill and faith, rather than Savoraks fierce brutal rushes, swinging both mace and shield, protected by armor which no man outside the Church of Myor, a neutral scet of warriors purposed for the art of slaying, would bother wearing.
Marr is a classic knight in armor...well...before the incident which took his old castle. Now, Marr sells his blade to those who needed it.
Or blades, to be more correct.
Marr used agility and skill, weaving in and out, striking the most vital areas, then neatly ducking out of harm's way.
Korro, to be frank, was not a fighter. For now, his feet were his best friends. While Marr did purchace a bow for him to use, he wasn't anywere as good as him.
Korro frowned, he was just...dead weight now. He couldn't do anything, anything really usefull. In a fight, the others would just tell him to get behind them, and let them take care of it. He's...useless.
Tears began to form in his ocean eyes. Marr instantly noticed, "Ah! Korro, you're crying! What's wrong?" Korro did nothing but wrap him arms around his friend.
Marr was so friendly to him, almost brotherly. He was a squirrel too, but Marr's fur was redish, opposed to Korro's brown. Marr had orange eyes, and black hair, while Korro's were blue and brown.
Durran took notice too, "Hey, something wrong there little guy?"
Korro sniffled a few times, "no" he managed after a few hiccups.
Durran offered him his scarf, "Here, take this and quiet down."
"?"
Savorak grunted and readied his mace, "Someone's there."
He pointed toward a shadowy figure near a door, "Hey! What do you think you're doing!!"
(sorry for cutting it like this)
Sighing to himself as he scribbled away at a peice of parchment in the dim light from a lantern Faclan went over his list again. He knew that by now the shopkeeper had long gone off to his big house and his large dinner. Where he had to stay overnight taking inventory and cleaning the shop just to make enough coin for his young brother and sister to eat. But the thought of them kept him going through all the long sleepless nights. He was all they had left after all after those raiders had murdered his parents when they were out on a walk...Sniffing slightly he wiped his eyes on the back of his paw as his long hairless tail swished slowly behind him.
Mumbling curses to himself as the lantern light flickered and then went off Fac fumbled around in the darkness trying to find the lantern again. But then he froze. A small kind of scratching sound was coming from the main store room. Slowly opening the backroom door a tad Fac peaked out from behind the crack between the door and the frame. The moonlight lit up the shop floor nicely...But no-one was here. Staying completely still he could still hear the scratching, and it sounded like it was coming from the door......Thieves!
Biting his lip he quickly weighed his options. If he let the thief(s) take anything...the shop owner would fire him for sure and he doubted he could find another job in time. But if these turned out to be more then theives and they didn't care who was in there way...Then his sibilings would have no-one to help them. But he had to at least try, theives were normally cautious and would hopefully run if they knew somone was here...most of the time. Picking up the broom he had been using earlier he gulped and took a few deep breathes to steady his nerves before opening his mouth. But strangely his words seemed to come from outside the shop before he could even say them. Blinking he slowly walked toward the window just as four figures came into view. Staring wide eyed at them he looked down at the door and could see the thief, only black blot on the ground. Gulping again he stood at the window, looking from the group to the thief.
(Hes a rat if you couldn't guess smile.gif )
Biting her lip, Selena picked the lock. She hated picking locks, depends on the lock and what she would have to do to break it, it could get quite noisy … Noisy enough for her anyway. She hated noise. The quieter she was the better. But sometimes it had to get noisy.
Smiling to herself she put away her picks and just stood there looking at her achievement. It was then that she heard faint noise, that wasn’t coming from her. There was at least two of them … Or one person having a conversation with themselves.
Slowly looking around with her adapted sight she could see four figures walking closer to her. One seemed upset for some reason or another.
Then silence for a moment.
She shook her head and went back to work.
Jumping as one of the figures called out to her, to turned around to look at them once more, wonder how they could have noticed her, and just what they’re intentions were.
“I am of no importance to you. I simply forgot my key inside and lock them in. I’m trying to get them out before morning so I can open up.” Selena lied to them.
“Now be on your way now. Thank you.” She said turning back around to the door. Wanting to be in and out before anything else happened, totally unaware that there was someone on the inside.
The party of four quickly examined this new person.
They all silently agreed, whomever she was, she was lying.
That little light that was following Korro seemed to take an interest in her itself, and floated in and around her, revealing that she was wearing pure black clothing, and her stance was a dead give-away.
She was a thief.
Durran was the first to speak, "Well then, if you are not a theif, then would you kindly explain why you are so deft in the art of lockpicking?"
Savorak and Marr quickly took positions around Selena, blocking all means of excape for her.
Savorak nodded, "No no no, dear soldier, if she says she needs entry, so desperatly as she says so, then why not, pray, help this young women?"
He withdrew his mace, still unwashed with blood from a previous battle.
"Dear soldier, kindly move this young one away, I'm afraid this could be a little...heh..messy."
Durran wrapped his arms around her and pulled her away from the door, trying to be as gentel as he could. He spoke in a low voice, so no one would hear him, "Now don't struggle, it'll just make things worse. You don't want to give him more of a reason to doubt you now."
He flashed a friendly smile, "I can tell you've been at this for a while, but you still have a bit to learn."
"Yeah, for example, try wearing normal clothes when trying to pose as a nobody."
Marr chipped in.
'What? They were giving her advice!' Korro thought, 'Such rouges!'
He shrugged. It was exactly what he'd say.
Savorak twirled his mace, "Now, if you need entry," he lifted his mace high, "THEN I SHALL MAKE IT SO!!" He jumped back a pace, then sent his mace crashing through the wooden door, easily broken in to pieces.
Savorak 'huffed' and returned his mace to its belt. He made quick note of a scant little rat shakily wielding a broom, and bowed, "Well then, entry is at hand...theif."
Following the little light thing that was with the group of four, and what she assumed to be a twisted little fire-fly with her eyes, trying to shoo it away. Selena had a feeling this was going to be a long night.
“I am so deft in the art of lock picking because … my father forgets the keys a lot.” She answered and without another word she was surrounded.
I do not need any help, thank you. Now will you just leave me to my business and you four go on to you own…” She said with a sigh, looking back and forth between Savorak and Marr.
“Hey hey heyy….Do not touch me. I did nothing to you” Selena hissed at Durran then rolled her eyes. “Yes of course I have been at this for a while, my father owns the place.” She said then turned to Marr, “Ya well maybe black is my favourite colour.”
Closing her eyes as Savorak broke the door down, Selena quietly cursed to herself. “Ya thank you for that…I hope you’re going to pay for the repair!” She yell at him. “I’m not of thief!” She yelled again at him as she pushed past Durran and walked to the now broken door and Savorak, continuing with her lie.
Having a quick peek inside, Selena had missed the broom wielding rat as she was more focused on getting rid of these four clowns before they wake everyone up and blow her cover. “Great, you helped me with the door, now will you please go! Now!”
She has been in trouble before, has done some things, stolen from people that she shouldn’t have. Selena couldn’t afford to get caught again. And she wasn’t about to let some clowns screw it up on her.
Watching as the party surrounded the thief Faclan finally allowed himself to breath and smile. at least some people were still decent it seemed. Letting the broom clatter to the floor he looked down at his paws, still shaking. Rubbing them together as he watched one of them lead her away by force he smiled again...But wait, what was that one doing with th*CRASH*
Staring with wide eyes and open mouth Fac couldn't belive what had just happened. There people weren't friendly..they were probably working with this thief! Diving behind a stack of shelves he clamped a paw over his mouth to keep himself from shouting in fear. Doing that would just make them want him out of the way more.....But what had he done now. He was trapped in this place with a band of thieves and thugs outside.
Looking to the side he could see his broom was still a few feet from the door, and a shadow was coming toward it and him, and by the sounds of it it was female. Staying as still as he could he just listened, praying that the noise would attract anyone that could help him. But the footsteps of the female were getting closer, soon she would be upon him. A silent tear slowly slide down his cheek as he thought of what would happen to him if this band caught him. He would be dead...and then his poor siblings would surely die. Looking up in fear as the female passed by where he was crouching he gulped...
Savorak almost burst out laughing once he sent his weapon crashing through the door. Under any other circumstances, he would've done that, but,
heh,
it was just too similar-hilariously close to how he first met up with Durran...
...
He sobered quickly-when he did 'catch' Durran, Durran almost killed him in the disasterous fight that ensued.
Damn that Durran and his skills. Durran made it a point to at least become a half-master in everything, and oft goated about his ablilities or at least tried to make you do the same things.
Especially his herblore-the craft of natural flora to create posions and the like.
Posion, thats what really made him so damnably difficult to fight.
Durran'd use a mixture of both posion and its antidote to slow the poison's effect until the most pivital point, durring the most heated part-the middle. When you made damn sure you're going at it with just the right amount of energy, bam!
You're floored by the posions.
Oh, and did I mention he uses far more than just one mixture?
Mayhaps you best look into as why his spearblade is so long. (and hollow)
But thats the past, and, as members of the Church say, "To dwell to far in the past is just another way to die." Sadly, it was too true. Some members, paticularly the older ones, were so wrapped up in research that they went insane or forgot what it truly meant to be an upholder of Myor.
Which explains why they are no where as solem and..what is a kind way to say it......tactful like other priests.
Now was the time to block Selena, who was obviously lying, and trying to excape.
Two things other priests would condem one for, but Durran could only shake his head in pity. She was a terrible theif.
Savorak blocked the door with his gigantic sheild, which was almost as tall as she was and was embazoned with the symbol of his faith. He wagged his mace under her nose, "Now now, little girl, you'll not be getting past me. I'm sure you recognise this insigna*, so you best respect me and my cause."
(*OCC: Just say you do.)
"Now, you'll pay one way or another. There shall be no excaping of punishment, which we Myorians are quite famous for. Speaking of payment," he motioned to Korro (who carried the money).
Korro neatly counted out several silver pieces and left them on the counter, "There, that'd be more than enough to pay for the damages. And...heya Marr, whatcha got there?"
Marr and Durran showed up, both of them were searching around the store, and now their paws and hands were filled with various equipment and other items, their faces alight with boyish glee.
Marr giggled, "Lookie here, its everything we need!"
He was right: There was enough dried food to finally get Marr to shut up, enough flint, rope, hooks, knifes, lockpicks (M-'what's lockpicks doing in a store?' D-'Shh'), axes and other survival gear to make Durran drool (which is is), boots and polish and hammers to finally get those annoying dings and scratches of Savorak's armor, and enough clothes to make Korro bounce around with delight, whom love nothing more than an extensive and varied wardrobe.
Durran laughed too, "Now, where's that keeper?"
Marr frowned, "Yeah, I didn't see one yet."
Korro waved a paw, "Oh, there's always somebody at a shop. Either its the owner, or some hired paw cleaning up. I should know, I've done it myself. And," His little face started to turn a slight shade of pink, "Well, I used to be..well..I used to be the most..err..dastardly assistant ever, and, ah..uh..no one could..urr..rip people off as good as I could, to put it nicely." His face now was alight with the rosey color of embarassed pride.
"So..we're in luck then, right?" Marr asked his friend.
"Most likely, I feel there's someone else around." Korro confermed.
"Please?!?" Durran asked, and niegh a second later the two squirrels joined in the pleading.
Savorak took a deep breath and sighed, "GODS, I do not know how I put up with you three!! Fine!! Tell that kid behind those shelves that we'll buy it, and tell him that we'll be staying until noon tomorrow, in which we (eyeing Selena) will repair the door.
And I will personally speak to the proprieter myself."
Which, was automaticly would be a one sided debate if it came to it.
Knowing how imposing a Myorian Church member was, a Prelate at that (The second most prestigous rank in the Church), and in full armor, with one of the most feared **voices ever...
No contest.
(**Actually, in most non-violent cases, Myorian members speak in rather plain, calm voices and will not show any ammount of anger, scorn, or any emmotion really. Thats the last thing you want from one of them.)
Any Myorian could get a simple commoner to belive whatever they would say, and nobles, if this properiter was one, was not much of a challenge.
A few bribes-which from a Myorian, usually meant broken bones-would certainly settle the matter.
And, being a Prelate, a adventuring FiendSlayer, he had the authority to do that.
Mostly because no one wants to question one.
Selena winced a little as Savorak smashed the door to pieces.
‘Great! That’s all I need now. For the whole town to wake up! Who do these fools think they are? I should have just left when I had the chance. Now I have to wait until they leave me be…When ever that is…’ She thought to herself.
“I am not a little girl!” She hissed at Savorak, “…And get that thing away from me.” She said backing up a little. “Respect you and your cause? What cause would that be?” She asked tilting her head, looking at him, although she couldn’t care less what his cause was, as long as it had nothing to do with her.
‘Punishment? Who do they think they are that they think they can go around and do whatever the hell they want!? She thought to herself. Although she had a few choice words she could say to them, she choose not to. Right now, the odd were against her and she didn’t really like playing against the odds.
A hardware shop. Most things could have been useful to Selena, but now she couldn’t do anything with an audience watching her. A good opportunity gone. Wasted. She was hating these four more and more with each passing minute.
She sighed, glaring back at Savorak. It was clear that he was the leader out of the four. He must have been drunk if he thought that she was going to help clear up the mess that they caused. No problem…All she’d have to do is sneak out of there while no one is looking.
Such as now. With everyone looking around the shop and the other three pestering Savorak, Selena could easily slip out un-noticed, or so she thought.
And with a slight grin on her face she slowly eased herself back towards the door and back into the night.
As the large party spoke amongst themselves it seemed that he was wrong. They were just a group that were traveling and needed supplies...though why they had broken down the door was still a mystery to him.
Quickly wiping his face clear of any tears he straightened up and stepped out from behind the shelves to slide the silver into the stores money bag after making a note of how much there was on the table and what they were purchasing. He did this in silence, as the strange group were still talking. Slipping the bag back into its small safe and locking it he slipped the small key and twine back over his wrist and hid it under his sleeve. Looking up again as he was down he set his paws on the counter.
"If you want to stay I certainly wont argue, just please try to cause as little damage as you could....I'm in enough trouble as is now with the door gone." Looking out the window as the moon dipped lower in the sky he stifled a yawn. "The owner of the shop should be in about six hours, he likes to get in early to make sure that nothings happened. I sure hope your good at explaining things or ill probably get far worse then being fired."
He said as his face drooped, it was clear from this kids clothing and appearance that he wasn't that well off, but he was at least pleased that they were offering to help explain what happened her so all the blame wouldn't be on him.
Savorak grinned as the young rat explained.
"Well now friend, you have no need to worry, for I am a member of the Church of Myor-a religous sect focused upon the absolute destruction of evil! We have developed some sort of...noterity for our brutality, one can say.
As our kind say, 'Soft words and loud prayers are nothing to us. The only prayer we need is that for your eternal damnation."
He chuckled, "I will have no problems dealing with this man. Many do respect us...or is it fear?" Another short laugh,"This girl however, is an entirely different..."
Savorak's jaw dropped a bit. She excaped! He was about to whirl upon Durran, but he too, was gone.
'Takes a thief to know a thief, and only theives can keep up with themselves,' he said once.
In short, Durran was probably chasing after her.
Someone like that could be of use to him...
---
Marr and Korro, the two squirrels, also noted that the theif was gone, but neither one thought much of it, considering Durran was out too.
Marr was busy worrying about the supplies they just bought, and how exactly were they gonna carry all this around.
Korro, on the other hand, was much more interested in the rat behind the counter.
"Well hiya! So...you work here then? Mhm, I was in your spot not to long ago meself, well, till this guy," He thumbed back to Marr, "Found me and took me along. Ya'see, these guys are kinda famous!"
That one," he pointed at the huge armored figure standing at the door, leaning of a shield just as big as he was, idily running a gauntleted hand over a mace.
"He's known as Savorak Myor. He's part of a Church that's dedicated to demonslaying. They're really brutal and scary, which is why no one messes with them. Each one is super strong and fearsome. That symbol on his shield? That's the insigna of his Church.
Maybe you've heard of his kind, but either way, I'm still scared of him."
"That other guy that ran off, that's THE Durran Oro, the real one! Famous guy! Don't ask why he's with us, caz I don't know.
He's does a bit of everything, which is why he's famoss I guess? He's a really nice guy though."
"The other squirrel's Marr Davvo. He's so neat-o! He was a knight a long time ago, but not anymore. He won't talk about it, so don't ask."
"As for myself, I'm just Korro Vann; just a lucky kid who got mixed up with these guys. I've got nobody left, so I guess I'm okay.
What about you?"
---
Durran's heart thumped in his chest, as if it was trying to break out and breathe itself. It has certainly been a long time since he felt the wind race alongside him.
The inky shadows, the soft footfalls of his own running, the pearl in the sky lighting his way.
It was perfect.
Just as it was seven years ago.
A true master of in arts of stealth, guile, and one of a more darker purpose.
Suffice to say, no one could steal away that spark that lay trapped in mortal flesh.
He rounded a corner and waited. Not much later he checked his dripping spearblade. He smiled and stepped in the middle of the street he was on-right in front of the other thief.
He smiled disarmingly, leaning on his spear, "Well now my fellow lurker in the dark, we can't have you skipping out on us now, can we?" He made a point by training his weapon on her.
"Even cloaked by blackness, I can still fell you no matter what move you chose to take. Now, we shall settle this."
He pulled out a whistle with his free hand-the same whistle used by guards at night.
"If you chose to run away, I will call them. When they arrive, they will find a thief.
I suggest come with me, sister of the night, or I will kill you myself."
His features lit up, even in the dark, "Don't think you'll get away from me. I too am one of the night. One of the..." He flicked his spear around, spraying whatever was on his spear around, "Darker sorts. I would follow me, if I were you."
Selena smiled to herself as she started to slow down after getting and running away from those creeps, who ever they were.
However she skidded to a halt when she came out of her own world and into the real one and stopped dead in her tracks as she saw someone step in front of her.
”Not you again…” She said with a sigh as she looked up at Durran.
“Why can’t you just leave me alone…I’ve done no harm to anyone. Only thing I’ve done to you was walk away on you.” Selena said to Durran, as she pushed his spear aside and away from her. “Now Now. You don’t see me pointing a weapon at you so you can put yours away.” She demanded.
“You’ll really call on some…guards…to come track me down, in which case you won’t need them anyway because you’d kill me if I leave you…” She said rolling her eyes.
“If you are indeed one of the night, then why not give your own kind some slack and just leave me alone and not get in my way or involved in my business?” She asked him, slowly walking around him. Though she could make a run for it if she so choose to, she decided not to. She did not know what Durran was capable of, nor was she about to find out if what he says is true.
“Now are you going to let me go in peace or do I have to kill you so I can leave?”
Faclan only nodded as both the human and the squirrel spoke to him. Although he was already terrified of this man, due to the fact that he almost destroyed the store front, he had to take solace in the fact that at least he was part of a church. So he should be respectful and polite...hopefully.
Turning back to the squirrel he managed a weak smile as he spoke about the strange party. He had to admit that they at least seemed well prepared, though he wondered what they actually did. Demons and evil creatures Fac had always hoped were just stories...but if there was an entire church dedicated to their extinction, it seemed much more then that.
Doing his best to push the thought from his mind he bit his lip slightly at the squirrel, needless to say he was ashamed about his situation in life and what he had to do. But at the same time he was happy that he still had some of his family left, he couldn't see how this squirrel was so happy with having no-one left. But he still managed a smile as he started. But even before he had finished the first sentence he had broken eye contact with the squirrel and was looking at the counter top.
"I'm just someone who is unlucky I guess. If you were wondering why I was so worried about the door its because I'm all my little brother and sister have left....No more parents or anything. So I can't let anything happen to this job, its all I have left to support them." Sniffling slightly he wiped his eyes on the back of his paw before continuing. "Sorry, its just hard to talk about my life sometimes."
Korro nodded sagely and folded his arms like a omnisent mage, "Hmm, I think we've got an answer to that!"
Savorak looked up, dreading whatever answer this little squirrel had.
Whatever was so simple for Korro, usually ended up being some huge task for the rest of them.
'Small wonder why I never get anything done here' He thought.
Marr, loathe to dishearten his little friend, asked, "So, what's your plan?"
"We take him with us-"
Everyone's jaw dropped-that was unexpected!
Even worse, that pause meant he wasn't finished!
"I...I..don't.." Marr tried, but the shock froze his tounge.
"Then," Korro continued, "We let his brother and sister stay at Mr. Durran's home!"
...
'Well, it was a solution,' Savorak mused after his senses returned, 'Durran has amassed a huge ammount of wealth and personal rites to land and persons, his 'home' being the epitome of that.
Durran's home was in truth a small castle-fort nestled in the mountains to the north of here. There he had a full three score of veteran solders under his command, with a expert staff, and every facility one could think of.
Food, water, weaponry, training, everything could be found here.
Durran has the smarts to purchase all the land surrounding the castle up to a full leage away, and included a few farms and a iron mine as well. Timber was easily access, and food and raw materials were plentiful.
In short, it was self-suffient in every sense of the word.
A fine solution was to send Faclan's family there.
Durran's retinue was more than competent to verse them in the high class arts, with emphasis on theology, alchemy, and stealth (Durran's favorite subjects)
and his solders could easily hold his home for months.
Given a few years, Durran's home could turn anyone into a sophisicated member of soceity. It would be a smart move....if Durran gave his consent.
"Er...well Korro-" Marr edged on.
"Well what?" Korro asked him dangerously.
"I...nothing Korro." Marr faultered.
Savorak groaned. It was going to be a long day.
-----
Durran laughed aloud. What nerve!
"Little girl. Don't test me. I come to offer you something! Wealth, power, status, whatever it may be, I offer you. If you were not so difficult and let fate play her cards uninterrupted, things would have been much smoother. I must play my trump card now, instead of allowing each other to know one another better."
Durran stepped aside. "I understand you, what you are, your own position in this life. I have been there. I shall do the same thing my master did. I offer you another life. I offer you a new life, in which the world will bow to you. I offer you freedom from the wretched life you life now."
He moved past her, "If you want to take it, follow me. You will ask, but I shall not answer. If you wish not, then go, and stay out of my sight.
This is all I offer you little girl. A new life. Take it now, or leave it forever."
"Really? Because just a minute ago you were offering me death..." Selena said rolling her eyes at Durran, watching him.
"May I ask why you offer me these things?" She asked starting to follow him, not really wanting to, but curious to see what she can get from him.
Stepping in front of him, she looked up into his eyes. "Who are you, really?" She asked, crossing her arms at her chest, as if not going to let him pass unless he answered her question. "And if I choose not to, then stay out of my way. Simple as that." She added with a shrug.
The nerve of him. What makes him think she want’s what he has to offer. Knowing her luck, it was all just a scam to take her in and get a reward out of it. Everyone was the same, so why should this one be any different.
Fac's head zipped up to look at the squirrel as he suggested that they all move to live with the group. He was silent as they bickered about the idea, his mouth only slightly agape. But he seemed to finally come to grips with the only nice thing someone had said to him after his parents died and his face quickly turned into a huge grin. "You would really do that? Just help us out like that?.....wow....Thanks you so much!" He said as he reached over the counter and hugged the squirrel, small tears sliding down his face. His younger siblings would finally be safe and have food, this squirrel had saved them...
Savorak couldn't help but smile at the younger boy's reaction; Durran might of offered that anyway, so all was good.
"Good, very good, problem solved," He mused quietly with himself, "But that gives me another problem, and another headache."
He frowned. He had no idea what this kid was capible of that would be usefull to the group. Durran usually handled the money, Marr was trained to use the varied equipment neccisary for their travels, and Korro at least had bit of magic that undoubtly made their lives a lot easier.
He shifted his armor around; he knew what his purpose was.
A warrior priest, a knight, a...whatever Durran was-a theif, rouge, whatever, Savorak wasn't entierly sure-and two young street kids, one of which could do magic.
What a motely crue.
--
Korro patted Fac's back kindly as he returned the embrace.
"Ha, I did the same thing when Marr took me with him. It'll be all right. Savorak's a bit scary, an' Durran's..." he paused, trying to find something that could descibe him but failed, "Scary too, but they're both really, really nice people. Marr's the best though-trust me."
Marr nodded, "Yup. Though the goin's not gonna be easy. We're all pretty much following Savorak there. Durran's with us..just for fun I think, and I'm with him because I owe him. Korro's with me no matter where I go, so that means you'll be with him."
The warpriest clacked his mace against his armor in agreement. "Precisly. I am on a personal mission for both myself and my church. I am constantly on the move, abiding my the rites of my church-my being. As such, I am hunting down a paticular, a very dis-illusioned soul, one who's power is a viable threat to us, and everything we stand for."
Savorak's grip on his mace tightened in anger, "He was one of us, a Myorian warpriest. He hunted every being of evil with comendable zeal. He went too far though, as to actually kill other humans-and other things-even slightly tainted with evil. Even your kind."
"We, as warpriests, accept the fact that even though we represent a higher power, we are not of that-we aren't above our fellow man. We're not perfect, and we can fairly say that there is evil in us as well. This paticular warpriest has gone as far as to cast out all of humanity, declairing us all beings of inherit evil that must be destroyed, in paticular our own church."
Savorak huffed, "In short, an insane heritic who must be killed."
---------------------
"Fine."
He tried everything he had, every trick. Threats didn't seem to work, and she wasn't drawn to wealth and other meaningless promises.
She kept questioning him, not trusting him for a second.
In short, a strong spirited woman, who had a good head on her shoulders.
A perfect normal girl, if not for the circumstances.
Which made getting her to join him a hellua lot harder.
"I am the Durran Orro. I am seen by the world as a kind and noble fighter, and I have many who exemplify me as the epitome of human's greatness. Children imagine themselves as me, younger adults want to be like me, and older folk see me as a hero."
He shrugged, "I can honestly say I've earned that respect. I started as an adventuerer, who just listened to his consious, and did what was right. Eventually, I had many great and powerful lords calling for my service, as I kept by what was right and upheld the right of the world."
He smiled, "What's what they knew. I wasn't the perfect herioic knight. I did some minor evils, stealing little trinkets and breaking in houses in my free time, learning the arts of stealth. I don't fight like Savorak does. I must utilise steath and illusion to bring victory. How did I bring down Damos the Berserker, he who kept and entire city under his great bloody boot? Poison, long before we fought."
"How did I rid a castle of an evil lord? I slew one of his personal servants, one who was very intimate with that man. I posed as that girl, and then slew the man in his private chambers. Then, I played as that lord, using the late lord's might to rid the land of my enemies. Once the last corrupt lord in that area fell, I personally invited everyone of higher status to a great victory feast, and poisoned and killed every single one, leaving only the 'pure' those unfourtunate souls who had nothing-now had everything."
Durran laughed,
"Amazing what a bit of trickery can do. What I need is your assistance. No, not as a protoge, but an ally. That priest who broke down that door at the shop-he needs my help. I fought alongside that man before, and I have no intentions of bringing him anything but success."
"He's hunting someone, but that paticular someone has many great and powerful friends, ones with much influence in this world. I need a partner to help me deal with them, simply put. And if you become famous or wealthy as you help me, so be it."
Durran frowned, "I have influence too, being myself, but not enough to deal with the priest's prey. I need your help is all. If you accept, then go ahead and follow me. If not, then go and live your pitiful life, but do not be overly surprised if you awaken with a knife in your heart," He glared at her, "I can't have my reputation ruined, either as a nobel warrior, or ruthless killer."
Selena rolled her eyes. “You say you earned everyone’s respect, yet you tell me all these things that everyone doesn’t know about…your darker side, as it were. You didn’t earn any respect, they are just fools for believing in your words.” She said in a huff.
“…If you’re so great, that what help could I be to you? Bait? I don’t think so. I want the whole story before I even begin to think about helping you and what my part will consist of.” She said with a grin. “If I leave, you won’t be able to find me again to drive a knife in my heart.”
Selena leaned against the side of a building with my arms crossed against her chest. “…So out with it…Mr. Mighty-hero-and-thief.” She said, watching him. “…And don’t leave anything out…” She said. He was lucky enough she just didn’t leave already. But seeing as they spoiled her fun for the night, she may as well get some enjoyment off them while they are around. Then once they leave, it’s back to business. She doubted that she’d get anything done with them around…and following her asking for ‘help’ What ever their version of help is.
Why should she even help them? All they did since the moment they said her was cause her trouble and grief. Besides, she works better when alone. And doesn’t like team work or partnering up with anyone.
In her eyes, it was ‘Me, Myself, and I’
