Title: Heroes
Description: And what makes a good one...

I figured this forum needs some action, so I'm going to post a counterpoint to another topic already existing. What makes the heroes so good?
If you had to write a story, what would you need to include in a hero (or multiple)? Any particular personality traits that need to be expressed?

For one thing, they shouldn't be perfect! Heroes need to have a flaw, even if it's one that they dont' need to work through.

I definitely agree with that, and I have to add the additional stipend that EVERY hero (or character in general) has something that at least 75% of your audience can relate to.
Whether it be a specific fear, reaction, appearance, speech habits, or just some ideal that people can identify with; that makes the characters more than just blocks of text to the reader.
To that end, every hero must have something that people can at least get to in six degrees...
More on my take later.

I find many things can combine to create a great hero. In fact one of the thigns that makes a particularly good one these days is having grey morality which basicly means that the hero is not a paragon of goodness and virtue and will do some times questionable things for a good reason (your milage may vary)

Having a strong protagonist that goes through good character development is a must in developing a hero. Now, I will say that this protagonist does not need to see the world in black and white either.
Every person alive has some fault, whether it's just ignoring sage advice, causing havoc as a child, making horrible choices as a teen, or engaging in bad habits as an adult, or several other faults. So the main hero should have some too. I don't mean just one, although it usually makes for an interesting development should they have a crippling fear and have to try overcoming it...
But as Gigo was saying, the character needs to have some moral substance. Whether those morals are good or bad is up to the creator! They should not be the same person going in as they are leaving the course of your story (unless you have serialized it, or are making episodes with a focus on them somewhere).
Any other thoughts? I'm sure I'll think of something...
