Gold Dragons:
Golds are the largest dragons ranging from 38-42 meters in size. They are the "mothers" of the weyr and do not chew firestone as it makes them sterile and unable to clutch. Queenriders instead use flamethrowers when fighting thread. Golds are natural leaders by birth and command the entire weyr. No dragon will disobey a queen, even if it goes against their rider's orders. They are more intelligent then the other dragons, boosting not only in size but endurance and speed. While they're speed is nothing compare to the lighter blues and greens, queens can reach remarkable speeds during a rising.
Queen candidates must have a stable, strong sense of confidence and leadership. Afterall, they may end up running the weyr some day. Gold also tend to be difficult and strong willed so a tough girl is needed to handle the giant dragons. Golds will ONLY impress heterosexual females. They will rise 1-2 times a year producing clutches of 5-30 eggs. Bronze and browns are the only males able to catch them though Bronze usually win. The oldest queen makes her rider the Sr. Weyrwoman and the dragon who catches her queen will make their rider Weyrleader. Queens born later are Jr. Queens. When a gold stops rising, she will step down and the first of the Jr. Queens to rise will become the new Weyrwoman.
Bronze Dragons:
They are the largest male dragons in the weyr, ranging from 35-38 meters in size. Bronze have the best endurance and strength, making them strong fighters during threadfall. They also have the best flame but cannot turn as quickly as their lighter counterparts. Bronze dragons tend to be level headed and wise though sometimes stuck up doing tasks that they find demeaning to their rank such as errands and giving rides. Their riders are usually good leaders and able to think on the spot as they may become future Weyrleaders.
Bronze dragons always rise for the queens, usually catching them though a rare brown may slip past them. They can also mate with greens but their bigger size makes them harder to keep up with the agile fighters. Bronze dragons will ONLY impress heterosexual males.
Black Opal
Obviously the male of the duo, Black Opals are vastly different from their fiery sisters, often quite callous and cold, though with a hint of rebellion in them that shows when they are being bossed around. They are truly only loving of their own riders and a select few who gain their trust, but once you have the support of a Black Opal it is unwavering and for life. Their hides bear a base coat of pure black, but like Fire Opals, they spark with rich color of deep-sea blue and bright flame red, deeper and darker than the color of their sisters. They are the size of a large brown to small bronze (30-36 meters), and built far far more powerfully than the Fires, thick legged and heavy chested, often with oversized wings and more muscular bodies which means they are much slower in the air. But they have more than enough stamina to go an entire Threadfall and, through some quirk of their genetics, possess a double set of the flame-shooting muscles that most other dragons do, meaning that their flame can go twice as far, or at shorter distances, be twice as powerful.
Though a Black Opal -could- catch a Gold, it is rare just as a Brown Catching one would, and considering a Black Opal's usual demeanor, such a pairing would not be looked well upon. Black Opals tend to Impress to males akin to their own personality and would never Choose someone who is outgoing, leaving those people to their quick-flighted sisters. Instead they choose those that are the deep thinkers, who carefully weigh all the options, who know when to retreat and strike again another day if needed. They can Choose Heterosexual or Bisexual males, and any sexuality of females.
Brown Dragons:
Browns are the second largest males with a size of 30-35 meters long. They can create a good flame and turn better then their larger bronze counterparts. They are sturdy and have great endurance. Browns tend to be laid back and wiser then the others, except for the queens. These dragons are trustworthy and dependable, often the most loyal to their riders. You can always rely on a brown dragon.
Browns are strong enough to compete in a queen's flight however it is rather rare to have one actually win the flight. Instead they prefer to fly the wily greens. Browns will usually impress heterosexual males though bisexual is not uncommon. It is extremely rare but sometimes they may impress females.
Carnelian
Roughly the size of a medium to small brown, Carnelians are the tanks of the weyr. Gifted with stocky, powerful bodies, they have some of the greatest staminia, even rivaling bronzes. Their hides range from a rusty gold red to white, tan, and crimson patches. No Carnelian is alike and they have the most variety when it comes to markings and shades. They are strictly male dragons but impress to either male or female riders.
Carnelians are your typical gentle giants. They tend to be quiet and rough around the edges. They enjoy silence and time to think, rather than playing about like hatchlings. Even young Carnelians are serious for their age. They like to have work and be useful. Not the most conversational of dragons, these big guys are more likely to express themselves through body language and growls alone. Carnelians are big humble guys and follow rules strictly. They won't hesitate to bring order or dish out punishments. Despite being smaller, they don't fear taking on a bronze or brown. Carnelians usually pick candidates who are closer to them in personality. You will never see a hyper candidate impress one of them. Hard working people and just general gruff kind of candidates are more their favor. They are highly intellegent dragons and enjoy anything that makes them think.
Carnelians can fly any level of wing during Threadfall and can easily last the entire time. This makes them highly valued Wingseconds and even beating out bronzes for Wingleaders. They are mature at oen turn and can chase any female dragon. Carnelians can only come from VERY lucky gold mothers or a gold and Carnelian mating.
Fire Opal

The distaff gender between these two, Fire Opals are vivacious, outgoing, rebellious, and certainly not your sit down and stay at home type. Their coloring is just as noticeable as their personalities are, a base coat of shimmering white, but enhanced by the subtle flavoring of brilliant red and hottest-flame blue. They are about the size of a small brown to large blue (25-31 meters), but built far more for speed than agility, their appearance almost vulpine compared to the more equine-like dragons, and their headknobs are often slightly longer than most, giving them an excellent telepathic range and a firm grasp on speech even when young.
Fire Opals are unable to last through an entire Threadfall, but their speed and agility is invaluable in the higher Wings and their recovery time is very rapid, meaning that they are often called upon at the end to 'mop up' any remaining Thread. They tend to be quite excitable and fiery tempered, and though their temper flares hot, it can also be quickly banked and rarely does a Fire Opal get out of control. Though they are usually born sterile, there are the occasional few who are able to bear young, and when they do it is usually a mix of low ranks and opals. They mature at a turn and a half, though those that are fertile will take longer, anywhere from two to three turns at the most. Fire Opals tend to Impress to females of any sexuality, though bisexual and homosexual females have a bit more of a chance, and very rarely will Impress to homosexual males, and will oftentimes Choose those who call to their own personalities. Oddly enough, most Fires get on with Blacks pretty well..
Blue Dragons:
Blue dragons are the smallest male dragons ranging from 25-30 meters in length. They are also the most common males in the weyr and the second most common in the entire weyr. Blues tend to be more caring and pick up on emotions better. They are more empathetic and in turn, make excellent Search Riders.
They have great speed and manuverability but they lack the stamina to last an entire threadfall. Instead, the will switch with another shift to take over so not to exhaust themselves. Blues will never fly a gold because they simply cannont keep up with the endurance pressing race. Instead they chase the greens. Blue dragons will impress male candidates of any orientation. It's not rare but female candidates of any orientation can also impress blue dragons.
Green Dragons:
Greens are the only other female dragon of the weyr ranging from 20-25 meters making them the smallest dragons. They are the fastest and most agile of the dragons however like the blues, they must take shifts during threadfall so not to exhaust themselves. Since greens do not produce good clutches, they are allowed to chew firestone which renders them sterile. They are the most common dragon found in the weyr and make up a lot of the fighting wings.
Greens can tend to be overprotective and loving of their riders. They are flirtacious and sometimes have a sharp, nasty tounge. They get very disgruntled near their risings which occure three to four times a year. They are usually caught by blues and the occasional browns. Bronzes can also catch them but its not often seen. Green females can impress females of any orientation as well as males that are bisexual/homosexual.
