I hope to organize a chess tournament which would be held mid June. The date is not set because I hope to get more people aware and signed up for the tournament.

Don't be shy! this isnt ALL about who is the best, it's about getting to know people! Don't let your skill level scare you away from this. I am personally particularly crap at chess and im going to play!

Just getting the word out. I will post the website we will be playing off shortly. In the mean time, feel free to leave your mark here if you want to play and feel youll be around. The tournament will likely start on a weekend, and each match will be played so that both players are responsible for keeping contact with one another.

I suppose to help with that, if you are going to leave your mark here, also please leave a way to get a hold of you, whether its IRC or an email address etc.

I hope this goes well! Have a good day everyone!

The last time I played - my opponent and myself fought basically to a draw, each losing all pieces bar kings, and I believe one solitary bishop remaining for myself.
I declared myself winner and threw the board after they moved from check to check and refused to admit it was an illegal placement.
This was following approximately an hour of circling our remaining three pieces in a wary dance.

Ahh, good old primary school ;P

Right, ive found out a way to do this so its not messy! People who wish to register: please read this entire post.

First of all i would like to give recognition to shenron, he acted as a good sounding board and let me talk to him about this, and also supplied some of the ideas for the setup of this match. Antjie and Unkn0wnGenius were helpful too in clearing up some misconceptions i had about time zones. Thanks everyone!

Again i would like to emphasize that this is about community, may we all get to know one another a little bit better through this fun filled event!

The rules for this tournament are set up in order to make things run smoothly. There are no secrets, i will tell you why a rule is set as it is if i feel it will be helpful. Here is the OFFICIAL set up and rules:

1) All members wishing to play in this tournament must sign up here. This is because we want players to be active, that way theres not a big chance of half the tournament going dead because people arent here, yes? Active members will surely show their presence in both the channel and the forums to SOME degree.

2) Members who wish to sign up must sign up by posting below. Please include a list of times during the week you would like to play and convert it to GMT. I will try to match people up that want to play at similar times, but that is not always possible. YOU are responsible for meeting with your match once you recieve it and setting up a time together.

Example of signup:

I want to play at these times:

M,W,F: 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Sa,Su: 8:00 am - 10:00 am

I live in Central USA timezone which is GMT -6:00 therefore my times are:

M,W,F: 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm GMT
Sa,Su: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm GMT

Please mark your times GMT so that i know you have converted. Also make sure you mark am/pm and if there is any ambiguity please use 24h system (eg: 3:00 pm = 15:00)

Thanks!

3) The first round of the tournament will start on June 15. each round will last a week, and all games not played during the time given for that round WILL be considered a DRAW and NEITHER player will advance to the next bracket set. Seems a bit harsh maybe, but a week is PLENTY of time to play your games! This is done to keep the tournament rolling, and if you are dont set a time to play with your match its your loss. Hopefully the 1 week rule will also make it easy to deal with national holidays etc too!

4) Players are responsible to look HERE for their matches. I will try to post round 1 matches here maybe a week before the start of the tournament, but keep looking!

5) The games themselves can be played at:

http://gamescene.com/Multiplayer_Games_Lobby.html (Requires Shockwave)(Reccomended for the less computer savy)
OR
http://www.freechess.org/ (Requires Java?)

You can always decide to play elsewhere with your match, i suppose there are other places if you really want to google them.

6) All Matches are best 2 out of 3. Scores should be reported as a post here after each match is completed. The scores are taken on the honor system and both participants should make sure they agree with the score that is posted on this forum. Disputes will be dealt with for the most part, but if the score cant be determined, both participants will be held back from advancing to the next round. PLEASE BE HONEST!!!

I think i have laid things out well enough. Check back on this thread for more information. For now, the thread is open to offical signup! All people who wish to sign up please make sure you understand the information above, find a site to play at and get comfortable with, and leave your times below this post

(sorry, for those who signed up with me verbally or before this post, your sign up is not valid.)

If you need any help or have any questions please feel free to ask me or someone else for help!

Thanks!
-Mike

I can play:
Monday - Friday: 0700 - 1200 GMT
Saturday - Sunday: 0700 - 1400 GMT

edit: And can probably play at different times as well, but might be difficult as I work as well :]

My availability depends mainly on the dates. I'm working on my graduation and therefor won't have a lot of time till the 13th of June(Which is when I need to hand in the report) and then a few undefined days after I've got to defend it. After the 13th, I'm pretty much available all day, except those undefined days.

I hope we can play on a server that allows watching, I like to play chess, but observing (ur possibly future opponent) can also be nice!

I'm probably available to join...

M-F: 01-07 GMT

S-S: 20:-07 GMT

I also won't be available for the 15th-18th as I am traveling. A good site to play is at www.chess.com - you'd need to sign up, but you are able to watch other people's matches there as well.

***Update***

At this point in time the start of the tournament is (fairly) quickly approaching. Could everyone who wants to sign up do so by friday? smile.gif I will probably make the matches then, because we have an irregular set of people (not 4, 8, 16, or 32) and so SOME people will probably have 2 matches this first round! ohmy.gif

It is vitally important that all registered users be sure they have SOME way to play chess online. I've found a couple people with whom the listed sites dont work so well. Try the sites i listed in the other post with different browsers perhaps if its not working for you.

If they dont work for you, there are a few places around where a download is needed or a quick sign-up..... your match of course will have to grab the same software or service. While this isnt the best option, its how it has to go sometimnes eh? smile.gif

That being said ill cover two options really quick here. MSN games seems to have a live chess option if you google that, but of course you have to have MSN messenger or MSN Live, whatever the new fangled vista supported stuff is called now (*Drifter runs Win2k) rolleyes.gif Also, there is a ~3MB client you can download from Chess.net at http://www.chess.net/play/cnfw-lite.html (note that this is windows only) ....... you cant talk to anyone with this program except the "Guides" without paying, but you can play a game with eachother if you know the other persons handle (its in the titlebar!) and you poke around with the options. dry.gif

That being said, grab a few friends to sign up if you like, again ill probably kill signup on friday. Get used to a site youd like to play on and get warmed up smile.gif

Good luck to everyone and i hope you see this tournament as a fun and enjoyable competition. smile.gif

Thats all for now, contact me with any questions etc as always smile.gif

LET THE GAMES BEGIN! wink.gif

I'm releasing the bracket now becuse it is Friday in Greenwich, and therefore officially the sign up is closed, ye? That being said, i have a few quick things to say before i open up to the eyecandy that is my cheap html made bracket. laugh.gif

The rounds being 1 week long is all interesting now, as we have a strange number of registrants, 11. Since this is not a nice number like 4, 8, 16, or 32, it means that the first round is staggered, and some players will have to play two opponents this round. Hopefully a week is still enough. I hope we can eliminate it to the "Final Four" this week, but well see how it goes.

Additionally, I rethought the rule about both players being eliminated if their match isnt decided by the end of the week. It doent seem fair if someone signs up and then doesnt show. The other person, blameless, would not be allowed to continue. Therefore I suppose that i will rule that if a player is unable to even contact their match by Friday, they should come to see me that day if possible. If someone goes missing entirely and their opponent shows up at the end of the week, they will advance due to a "technical win" . Is this fair? smile.gif

All that being said... Please would you post your win/loss ratio on this thread after you play your match? and whichever person did not post the score, post that you agree or disagree. Keep in mind that each match is best 2 out of 3. If someone wins the first two games you are NOT required to play the third.

Examples of score post:

Drifter 1 - Xeolyte 2
or
Drifter 2 - Xeolyte 0 (in this case Drifter won the first two and the players decided not to do the third game.)

Just make it clear how many wins each player scored. As always, contact me if you have questions etc. Thats all.

And with that, here is your bracket! Good luck everyone, and have fun! biggrin.gif
