QUOTE (doubledown11 @ Mar 25 2009, 10:58 PM)
If you liked Beck, I suggest you watch:
Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pi2XSmlOPg

In fact if you are foolish enough not to have watched "All About Lily Chou-Chou" despite me lauding it in multiple posts as one of the greatest movies ever made.. WATCH IT NOW!!

immediately if you haven't already.

You can thank me later
wink.gif

despite its cliché ending (last 3 episodes or so), Mahou... was amazing. peaceful and beautiful and...
but the story doesn't matter that much.
you were right, the few musical moments are perfect, when the main characters wander in the streets or when they go to live houses, god! the settings/athmospheres... i can't find other words than sweet, nostalgic, warm. i don't know. it makes you want to be there. they achived to capture that special moment when the summer night falls slowly and people start going out in the streets, city lights under a pink/peach sky slowly fading to blue...
i wish i had a larger vocabulary to express my exact feelings.

and All about Lily Chou Chou, alalala i won't even try to talk about it. it was... wow. too good for words. i was very impressed, it's one of the first japanese movie i see that impressed me that much. the actors are so damn good. and ti like the melancolic pace(with Taste of Tea).
well at least i don't want to soil it with my simple words. so let's stop here.

thanks.
and THANKS.
it already made my weekend

happy.gif

EDIT: i couldn't help myself adding stuffs... really i'm mesmerized *_*

Wow!
I'm glad you liked my recommendations.
After reading your appraisal of Mahou Tsukai, I want to finish watching the series. (I've only seen the 1st 4 episodes.)

All About Lily Chou-Chou is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Maybe my favorite.
The use of BBS entires typed across the screen is a creative and unique narrative. It may be annoying at first but you begin to filter out what's filler and concentrate on the important details. And the BBS entries are vital to fully understanding the significance of and reasonong behind particular scenes in the movie.
the soundtrack is amazingly lush. How can you go wrong with Debussey and Salyu?
Aoi Yu who I already consider the greatest Japanese actress of all time has her first role in this movie.
Shunji Iwai is one of the greatest writer/directors in cinema today.
Almost all his films are masterpieces.

Since you liked Lily Chou-Chou, I highly recommend that you watch Hana & Alice next:

This movie moves at a VERY slow pace but the absolutely breathtaking scenes near the end make it all worthwhile.
Aoi Yu won Best Actress for her role in this movie.
After watching this film you will realize why I (and Roxy) have fallen in love with Aoi Yu. wub.gif
Hell, Chatmonchy is her favorite band, how can you NOT love her?!!!
Anne Suzuki is also great in this movie.

Aftre Hana & Alice, watch Rainbow Song.

This movie was ghostwritten by Shunji Iwai and stars Ueno Juri and Aoi Yu.
I cannot overstate how masterful Iwai is in taking seemingly insignificant scenes & details and molding them into an ending that will leave you completely stunned with awe.
This movie is all about the ending and EVERYTHING that happens before no matter how insignificant it may seem adds to the gravity and emotional impact of the incredible ending.

Oldboy is also highly recommended.
http://community.livejournal.com/tobenaits...093.html#cutid1

It is one of the greatest Korean movies of all time. BUT it is extremely twisted and depressing so save it for later b/c it will take you some time to get over the shock.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Ravik,
Thankls fpr the Shangri-La OP.
The OP makes the series seem pretty generic. Nothing like the epic grandeur of Last Exile. Hopefully, the anime itself has more substance.
And hopefully, people wanting to know more about the show happen upon or forum by mistake. laugh.gif

i've seen Oldboy twice when it came out!!! 4-5 years ago? don't know much about Korean movies but this one is a great one, Korean or not.
and it didn't shock me... it's just the kind of movies i LOVE! ahah perverted mind. you make me want to see it again.

Rainbow song seems great because there is Ueno *the girl i'd like to look like* Juri in it tongue.gif

currently watching Hana to Alice. i'm in the middle.
i admit Aoi Yu has THE face and attitude, but Anne Suzuki is so cute too, in a completely different way of course. she's not as gracious and good looking as Aoi Yu, but i really like her.
i'll wait 'till the end of the movie to decide which one i like the most.

But nothing can beat All About Lily Chou Chou...

ahah i don't spend my days watching movies. i'm just on SPRING HOLIDAYS!!!

I'm trying to get back into anime and follow by season, so I've picked up a few. So far I'm watching, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, K-ON!, Shangri-La, and Higashi no Eden.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, I had to pick up because I really liked the first series. Nothing much else to say really, its looking quite good so far.
K-ON! is cute and of course it has to do with music/bands so that's good enough for me. The animation is really smooth. Its a nice light hearted one with some good laughs. There was a nice DMC part on ep.1
Shangri-La seems interesting. I wasn't really feeling it on the first episode. Gonna probably need to watch a few more to see if I'll keep watching.
Higashi no Eden looks pretty awesome. I just watched the first ep and was liking it quite a bit. Some Bourne-esque stuff going on, which is always a good thing. The show is pretty stylish too, plus school food punishment on the ED.

Higashi no Eden is by far the best anime series this season out of the ones I've seen. I like how the main character even namedrops Jason Bourne's name in the 1st episode. The female cop letting him off the hook due to difference in "size" was hilarious. The attention to detail having the setting situated in DC was phenomenal. Also the voice acting for English speaking characters was spot-on... unlike Back.
Honey & Clover was one of the best anime series ever made and with the same animation team, a more action filled plot with espionage, AND the brilliant move to have School Food Punishment provide music for the ED... this series is a slam dunk win.

user posted image

My only gripe is that the characters look so close to ones from Honey & Clover that you forget you're watching a spy/terrorist anime and not a slice-of-life romantic comedy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I watched the first 10 minutes of Shangri-la and had to stop because it was so bad. So many outlandish yet stereotypical characters. The transvestite engineer in Gurren Laggan was hilarious and awesome... the transvestite characters in Shangri-la make me want to punch my monitor. Seriously, what is the deal with the pudgy overly effeminate boy wearing white-face? Who the FOLK thought this would make an endearing character. The only reason I would watch this anime is to see if this character gets a stray boomerang to the face. laugh.gif
I sooooo should have listened to Ravik's "fishiness" detector.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

K-ON! is not bad. You can never go wrong with KyoAni b/c at least the animation will be state of the art. Again the attention to detail is excellent in this anime. I love how they try to be as accurate as possible when they have their characters play instruments.
The 2nd episode was more engaging than the first. You get to see the girls enter a guitar store where Yui falls in love with a $2500 Les Paul.
I would like it if the humor had more bite/sarcasm (i.e. something along the lines of Lucky Star). Unfortunately, this anime is geared towards younger kids and they don't include much in terms of inside jokes that only adults would get. The DMC spoof was hilarious though.
I'll continue to watch this as it spurs me to think what Ecchan and her crew must have gone through as a 6-member Chatmonchy in high school @ Tokushima.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modnar said that FMA: Brotherhood was a continuation of the original BONES anime but that is soooo not the case. The fact there were so many characters that were alive who are supposed to be dead clued me in on that fact right away.
Basically they're telling the same story AGAIN all the way from the beginning but they will stay much closer to the manga this time around.
HOWEVER, the 1st series took 51 episodes, Brotherhood will only be 13 episodes long. blink.gif I'm skeptical as to what this series will achieve. It's the same animation group, half the storyline will be the same...
I think the main reason why they did this is b/c the manga is still ongoing and this way they'll able to continue the story with subsequent series. (The way they diverged from the manga in the original series there's no way they could continue it based on the manga)

I said it was most likely following the manga story line but even if it followed the anime plot, that I wouldn`t mind...

Anyways, you serious about it being only 13 eps!?
Hopefully this means it will be done in sections, eventually ending up where the manga finishes.
Based on the pace of the first two eps It`d be impossible to cover the origins of all the characters etc. in 13 eps so I imagine either they`ll make this a 50+ long series or make it in sections/arcs.

I`ll certainly be following Higashi no Eden, especially since Kenji Kamiyama was behind much of the ideas in GiTS Stand alone complex

Watching FMA
The new series has jumped right up to awesomesauce level as soon as it diverged off into the manga plot.
It's currently at episode 17 and the pacing of the episodes are now perfect imo.
I admit if you've seen the first series then the first episodes may have put some off but I assure you the episodes after about no. 10 do not disappoint.

QUOTE
Ten years ago, an inscrutable and abnormal territory known as Hell's Gate appeared in Tokyo, altering the sky and wreaking havoc on the landscape. The heavenly bodies disappeared, replaced by false stars. During this time, people who possess various special abilities emerged. Kept secret from the masses, these individuals, known as Contractors, are able to murder in cold blood. Various nations and organizations around the world use Contractors as spies and assassins, often resulting in violent battles for information. Each fake star has a corresponding Contractor, and they vibrate when their Contractor's power is being used. As such, Contractors are usually identified by their star's Messier catalogue number. However, their abilities are gained at the cost of their humanity. They are implied to lack human emotions which includes no aversions to murder, and they are regarded as extremely rational and logical in their decision making. Contractors are thus named because of their need to always complete a remuneration or payment each time their power is used (ex. eating flowers, breaking fingers, drinking blood). It is not entirely clear what happens to one if he or she fails to complete the remuneration. Contractors are described as being psychologically compelled to complete their remunerative task.

Dude, I just watch ep 19 and it was pure awesomeness, great fights, the best episode by far. I agree the show started off slow (esp b/c I saw the first season), but the eps get better as the go on.

DtB was great. I loved the first season can't wait the second. After the first season I knew there just had to be a second, it couldn't end like that .
