Personality: Before War Games: Val is a depressed young man, who struggles to understand his personal feelings; a case of teenage confusion. He often tries to cheer up, and often succeeds, yet he eventually returns to a habitual sadness. His mood determines how outgoing he is; sometimes he's open, sometimes he's completely silent for hours.
After: Val's time in MÄR Heaven has changed him. He's become a stronger and more outgoing person, driven by resolve to defeat those who wish to disturb the peace.
Physical Description: A thin young man with moderately tanned skin and sharp green eyes. Wears a black turtle neck long sleeve shirt with a zippered tan vest with a fur collar; brown sneakers, baggy black jeans with a brown belt. Over the time he's spent in MÄR Heaven, his black hair has grown out.
History- Part A: Val was an ordinary high school senior on Earth before being transported to Mar. He was heralded as a straight-A student, one who could easily get into any college he wanted. But there was a problem with motivation and procrastination.
Val sat in front of his television screen with a dull blankness, drool beginning to drip from his lips as he forgot to close his mouth. Just another hour, he thought. Then I'll start my homework.
The clock struck nine; he turned his head in horror to behold the perplexing numbers beaming from the digital device. It's that time already? Christ, there's no way I can finish the work now. Okay, I'll try again tomorrow.
He never got around to it during his whole weekend, and the test on Monday turned out to be much harder than he expected.
Val greeted his friends with the usual wave. Sitting down for lunch, he flicked his close friend Adam on the nose and growled. "You forgot to tell me what the homework was, dude. Now I'm up to my armpits in Economics garbage."
Adam rubbed his nose gingerly and muttered before eating, "What is up with the nose-flicks?"
The fact was that Val was reserved about the way he touched people, which made him seem more shy and afraid of people than he really was. He was simply uncomfortable with touching. Most people secretly wondered whether he became this way because of some traumatic event or if it was a psychological defect.
Val ignored his friend's grumbling and asked his other friends, Nick and Heath, if they wanted to come over to his house to play video games. They politely refused, since they had already fallen behind in their work because of similar invitations.
A stack of books and paper sat on Val's desk as he sat in front of his computer monitor this time. He forgot about his minimized research link, his eyes now focused on a downloaded TV episode he found on the internet.
Several days passed. Val began hitting himself; his brain was melted and his work was piling up. The stress was growing quickly, and he reflected on how he got himself into this situation. He thought, "Stupid homework. It's so pointless; I don't care about frickin' geometry. I'm never going to use it anyway..."
He ranted for hours, hours better spent on work. Upon realizing this, he began to panic. He finally decided to stop wasting time.
After days of stressful panic and last-minute worries, Val broke down. Tired, he laid down on his bed and just said aloud, "I wish I didn't have to deal with all of this. I want to escape this depressing existence. Just let me out of this cage..."
He fell asleep. When he awoke, he was lying in a field of wildflowers, stretching for a large distance in each direction.
"Where am I?"
History- Part B: Confusion sweeped over Val as he gazed across the fields. What is this place? Why am I here? How did this happen? Am I dead? No, I was asleep, I'm sure of it. Am I dreaming?
"It has to be a dream, there's no other explanation," he croaked. "I'll wake up any moment." He tried to fall back asleep, but he was too shocked to close his eyes. It all seemed way too real to be a dream.
He thought, This is like those TV shows where the main character gets teleported to another world for some reason...
"My God! Is this for real? Crap... what am I going to do now?"
He wasn't going to get any answers by just sitting around, "Even though the flowers smell nice," he mused.
He wasn't carrying any food, so hunger manifested very quickly. He resolved to do what he would do if he were playing a video game: find the closest town and stock up on supplies. He eventually came upon the town of Pazu after walking several miles. He quickly noticed a restaurant with the name on a large, eye-catching sign and walked right in. A driplet of drool fell from his mouth as he gazed at the menu.
He enthusiastically engulfed his food, and was dumbfounded when he realized he had no money. He was promptly thrown out, his face buried in dirt outside.
"Ouch..."
He pulled himself together and began wandering the town. "I need money, huh? Well, what kind of work do they offer..."
His prayers were answered when he found a mercenary request posted in town. Val got the mission; it called for the retrieval of a lost accessory in a dungeon. He entered the dungeon, and found a ring with a prism in the center and eight holes on the sides. It looked like an ARM, like the ones he had seen on sale in town.
After leaving the dungeon, he tried to return the accessory to the client for pewter, as he didn't know how valuable the ARM he had was. When the client saw what he had, he refused to take it. It turned out that the man had only misplaced his accessory and had already found it; this ARM wasn't the one that he was looking for. Thus, the ARM became Val's property.
Since then, Val has heard of the Chess Pieces' evil, and has joined Team Mar to fight them. He still searches for the reason he was brought to this world, and what he wants to do with his life.
History- Part C: The events leading up to the War Games and up to the Crystalis invasion had tested Val to the best of his abilities. He has yet to find a way back to Earth, but now he feels closer than ever.
