Zangetsu (Cutting Moon): Ichigo Kurosaki's blade

Unlike most shinigami, who can seal their zanpakutô after releasing it, Ichigo's zanpakutô is always in its shikai form. For that reason, Zangetsu has no release command. The shikai form of Zangetsu resembles an over sized, though more elegant, cleaver blade without a hilt, instead it has a makeshift handle formed by some cloth wrapped around the tang. The sword is as tall as Ichigo is, 1.74 meters, and has a black blade with a silver edge. Ichigo carries his zanpakutô on his back by the cloth wrapped around the tang. When not in combat, the cloth extends to cover the rest of the sword and falls away when necessary, shrinking back to a manageable size. The cloth can also be used to swing the weapon like a flail and toss it at opponents, but this is rarely done.



The bankai of Zangetsu, named Tensa Zangetsu (Heavenly Chained Cutting Moon), is considered completely out of the ordinary for any zanpakutô. Unlike most bankai forms, which usually create some sort of massive creature or effect, Ichigo's bankai actually shrinks his sword down to a daitô (Japanese long sword) with a black blade, handguard in the shape of the manji (which is the kanji for "ban," meaning "full"). The cloth wrapped around the hilt is replaced by a short chain with a broken link, similar to that of a plus spirit. In addition to his sword, Ichigo's robe is replaced with a long-sleeved, ankle-length black coat with red lining that is closed at his chest, much like that of Zangetsu himself. As explained by Byakuya Kuchiki, Ichigo's bankai is a compression of his power, rather than a vast expansion as other bankai are. This hugely compressed power enables Ichigo to move at speeds exceeding those of flash steps, and gives him matching agility and reflexes, allowing him to use his natural strength to its limits. With enough usage and acquired height, Ichigo can even appear as though he is flying. Ichigo's initial inexperience with controlling his bankai led to a serious drawback; the force of his compressed spiritual power caused all of his bones to crack, gradually decreasing his speed and power over time..



Zangetsu's special ability (in either form) is the getsuga tenshô (Moon Fang Heaven Stab), which in shikai form fires concentrated energy blasts from the tip of the blade in the shape of a blue crescent moon. It can be fired with or without a swing, giving Ichigo the advantage in bladelocks, where he can simply fire a blast to break the bladelock. When used with Zangetsu's bankai, these blasts are black with a red outline and their path can be controlled.

Suzumushi (Pure Insects): Kaname Tōsen's blade

Suzumushi's regular release command is cry, which has the automatic effect of projecting a high-pitched tone over a wide area, overloading the hearing of anyone in range and knocking them unconscious.

Suzumushi's second release command is smash his limbs, which changes Suzumushi into its Benihikō (Crimson Flying Locusts) form. Suzumushi vibrates momentarily and, after Tōsen moves the blade around him in a circle, a trail appears from the sword's path. The trail turns into hundreds of blades that rain down on his opponents.

Suzumushi's bankai, named Enma Kōrogi (Enma Cricket), creates a large, black dome centered at Tōsen's location and anchored to the ground with ten rings. Anyone within the dome loses the ability to sense anything around them, what Tōsen called Mumyō (Ignorance) which in the anime is represented by the characters under its effect being in black and white, while anyone currently in the dome but not suffering Suzumushi's effect being in colour. The only sense they retain is that of touch. The weakness of this technique is that which makes Tōsen immune to it: Suzumushi itself. Anything touching Suzumushi's hilt is immune to the dome's effects, so anyone able to grab Suzumushi recovers their senses.

Senbonzakura (Thousand Cherry Blossoms): Byakuya Kuchiki's blade

Senbonzakura's shikai is triggered by the command scatter. In its shikai, Senbonzakura's blade separates into thousands of slender tiny blades, which then fly away from the hilt. The release can be negated before it completes. While the blades are too small to see normally, they reflect light in such a way as to appear as cherry blossom petals. Byakuya can control the blades at will, allowing him to shred opponents at a distance and break through almost any defense. While Byakuya can control the blades with his mind alone, using his hands allows him to do so more effectively, making the blades move almost twice as fast.



Byakuya's bankai, named Senbonzakura Kageyoshi (Thousand Cherry Blossoms's Grim Scenery), is essentially a much larger version of Senbonzakura's shikai. To activate it, Byakuya drops his sword. The sword passes through the ground and two rows of giant blades rise up from the ground behind Byakuya or surrounding the enemy. These then scatter into millions of tiny blades. The number of blades is great enough that Byakuya can use them for defense and offense at the same time. He commonly forms them into large masses of blades to crush opponents. Like with his shikai, its attack is triggered with the phrase scatter.

Byakuya's bankai has several forms, achieved by arranging the blades in different patterns. They are activated by saying the name of the technique followed by the name of his bankai. Each form presents a different advantage, such as increases offense at the expense of defense.

Byakuya's attack form is Senkei (Scene of a Massacre), which unites the scattered petals into complete swords that form four rows around Byakuya and his opponent. In this form, Byakuya abandons the defense potential of his many blades and concentrates on killing the enemy. While Byakuya can control these swords as he does his regular blades, he usually attacks with just one in hand. After immobilizing an opponent, he can call in the other blades to hit them while they're trapped. He can also use all the blades at once for one immensely powerful strike.



To overwhelm the defense of an opponent, Byakuya can use Gōkei (Pivotal Scene). This aligns every blade in a spherical formation around his opponent, which collapses into them from every possible angle, leaving no blind spots and no chance to escape.

Finally, when Byakuya is weakened, he can use Shūkei (Final Scene). This condenses every one of his blades into a single sword, drastically increasing its cutting power. The blade appears bright white, earning it the name Hakuteiken (White Imperial Sword). Byakuya also grows pure white wings and a halo-like circle in the back, both made of chakra.



Sode no Shirayuki (Sleeve's White Snow): Rukia Kuchiki's blade

Sode no Shirayuki is released with the command dance. In its released state the blade becomes completely white and a ribbon forms from the pommel, earning it the recognition as the most beautiful zanpakutō in Soul Society. Sode no Shirayuki utilizes ice to attack, each of its three abilities being labeled as dances by Rukia. Some No Mai, Tsukishiro (First Dance, White Moon) denotes a circular area around Rukia's target and freezes everything within the circle from the ground upwards until it reaches the sky. Tsugi No Mai, Hakuren (The next dance, white ripple) fires a massive wave of ice from Sode no Shirayuki's blade. San No Mai, Shirafune (Third Dance, White Sword), her final ability reserved only for when her blade is broken, reforges her zanpakutō with ice particles, piercing through any object in its path and freezing anything in the vicinity.



Nejibana (Screw Flower): Kaien Shiba's blade

Nejibana's shikai command is uncoil the liquid heavens. Nejibana's shikai is represented as a cross between a trident and a ji (a Chinese halberd) with a crystalline appearance that has the ability to manipulate water. Like the ji it bears a horsehair tassel, although it is blue instead of the traditional red; similarly the two side blades are straight with concave edges as opposed to the usual crescent blade. During Rukia's battle with Aaroniero, Nejibana's described as having the ability to use the shockwaves it creates in conjunction with trident attacks to "crush and split the enemy in two." Kaien's techniques and form are also revealed during the battle, and are described by Rukia as "a trident technique reminiscent of dancing."

Benihime (Crimson Princess): Kisuke Urahara's blade

The shikai command of Benihime is awaken. In its shikai, Benihime's blade becomes a bit wider than that of a sealed zanpakutō and the hilt curves, adding a crimson ribbon and other elaborate decorations around it. Benihime has two known special abilities, one for offense and one for defense, both of which are activated by the command sing. Benihime's defensive ability forms a polygonal blood mist shield in front of Urahara. Benihime's offensive ability fires a crimson-colored energy blast.



Ashisogi Jizō (Ksitigarbha's Killer Head): Mayuri Kurotsuchi's blade

Ashisogi Jizō's shikai command is rip. n its shikai, Ashisogi Jizō transforms into a deformed trident with curved, serpentine blades and a guard shaped like a baby's head, all mounted on his sword's normal hilt. The weapon spews a poisonous vapor and when Ashisogi Jizō stabs an opponent, the poison cuts off the nerve signals that control limb movement, effectively causing paralysis while allowing the victim to still feel pain. During the Bount arc, it is shown that healing the stab wound doesn't immediately remove the inflicted paralysis.

Ashisogi Jizō's bankai, named Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō Golden Ksitigarbha's Killer Head), returns Mayuri's zanpakutō to its sealed state and produces a giant caterpillar in a red cape with a grotesque baby's head and a silver halo. The creature breathes a poisonous derivative of Mayuri's blood which is lethal to anyone who breathes it, aside from Mayuri and Nemu. Mayuri can change the composition of the poison, making any potential cures only viable in one instance. Mayuri has physically modified Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō itself so that it would change into a liquid and return to its sealed state if it were to attack him, implying that it is sentient as well as organic, reminiscent of Captain Retsu Unohana's Minazuki. Numerous blades can also extend from its chest, allowing it to run through opponents.

Hōzukimaru (Demon Light): Ikkaku Madarame's blade

Hōzukimaru's shikai command is grow. Hōzukimaru's shikai is unusual in that Ikkaku slams Hōzukimaru's pommel into its sheath to activate it when saying the command phrase. Once activated, Hōzukimaru takes on the form of what initially appears to be a naginata (spear) with a wax wood shaft. The pommel also has a red horsehair tassel. While it does technically function as such, it is also a three section staff, which surprises opponents when they first attack. Ikkaku uses the command split to separate the sections, after which the sections can independently reconnect and separate again at will.

Hōzukimaru's bankai, named Ryūmon Hōzukimaru (Dragon Crest Demon Light), keeps the three-section theme but loses its naginata properties. Instead, it's merely three oversized weapons connected by an equally large chain. Ikkaku's two main weapons are a Chinese Monk's spade and a standard Guan dao. Both have a traditional horsehair tassel at the hilt and a long cylindrical weight for a pommel. The pommels are connected by a heavy chain to the center section, which resembles an axe-like blade with a parallel handle forged into the blunt end and a dragon crest on one side of the blade. Despite all three weapons being of ridiculous proportions, Ikkaku wields them easily. Ikkaku usually holds one blade in each hand and lets the central portion float behind him, though he will occasionally spin the entire configuration about using the center handle as a pivot. Ikkaku's bankai, like his shikai, is also quite unusual. Aside from the increase in power, his bankai offers no special abilities and no special defense properties. While quite capable of injuring opponents, the weapons are easily damaged. To make up for this, Ikkaku's bankai gets increasingly more powerful as the fight drags on. After he performs his bankai, the dragon crest will slowly fill in with crimson dye as Ikkaku's chakra pressure rises. It fills faster when he spins Hōzukimaru with the center handle. When the crest is completely filled, Hōzukimaru is at its full power. However, the force of unleashing so much power can leave his zanpakutō's edge brittle afterwards.

Fuji Kujaku (Wisteria Peacock): Yumichika Ayasegawa's blade

The shikai command for Fuji Kujaku is bloom. In its shikai, Fuji Kujaku takes the form of a sickle-shaped blade, or falx, distinguished from the khopesh by the cutting edge being located on the inside. A hinge at the hilt allows Fuji Kujaku to split into four identical blades. Although Yumichika doesn't admit it to his 11th Division comrades for fear of being hated, since 11th Division zanpakutō are generally used for direct attack, he has a kidō-type sword. By using the command sakikurue (tearing deviate) , Fuji Kujaku flares up and takes the appearance of many peacock feathers, after which it drains the opponent's spiritual power, allowing him to beat even lieutenant-level fighters with apparent ease.

Haineko (Ash Cat): Rangiku Matsumoto's blade

Haineko's shikai command is growl. In its shikai, Haineko dissolves into ash, which Rangiku can then control. The ash can cut through objects as easily as a sword would, similar in principle to Byakuya Kuchiki's Senbonzakura.

Hyōrinmaru (Ice Ring): Tōshirō Hitsugaya's blade

Hyōrinmaru's shikai command is sit upon the frozen heavens. In its shikai, Hyōrinmaru itself remains the same, but gains a crescent-shaped blade attached to the hilt by a chain. Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. The slashes created by Hyōrinmaru gives off an immense amount of chakra which overflows from the tip of the blade, creating a flow of ice vaguely shaped like Hyōrinmaru's dragon spirit. The dragon flies at opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps with it.

Hyōrinmaru's bankai, named Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (Great Crimson Lotus Ice Ring), causes ice to flow from Hyōrinmaru onto Hitsugaya, forming into two large wings and a tail. Ice also forms into a dragon's head around his sword hand, encasing it up to the hilt; which is in the shape of an eight-pointed star. His left arm is covered fully until the wrist where it then spans into claws, leaving his hand and fingers free. Hitsugaya's feet are encased in ice in a similar manner to his right hand. Additionally, his wings are capable of folding around him to serve as ice shields. The wings can be used by Hitsugaya to fly. Three "flowers" of ice, shaped similarly to the lotus shaped guard of his zanpakutō, are also created behind Hitsugaya with four petals each, which melt away as Hitsugaya attacks. Hyōrinmaru's bankai has two known special techniques. The first is Ryūsenka (Dragon Hail Flower), which freezes any enemy Hitsugaya stabs, locking them into a cocoon of ice and freezing them to the core. Once frozen, Hitsugaya can shatter his opponent. The second is Sennen Hyōrō (Thousand-Year Ice Prison), which forms a multitude of ice pillars using the moisture in the atmosphere. These pillars then envelop the enemy.

Tenken (Heaven's Sword): Sajin Komamura's blade

Tenken's shikai command is roar. In its shikai, Tenken creates various body parts of a giant to copy whatever body part Komamura moves; for example, should Komamura swing his sword, a gigantic disembodied arm wielding a sword appears and does the same thing. Tenken's bankai, Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō (Heavenly Punishment of Kokujō's King) brings forth the entire giant. Like in the shikai, the giant copies every movement made by Komamura.

Zabimaru (Snake Tail): Renji Abarai's blade

Zabimaru's shikai command is howl. In its shikai, Zabimaru transforms into a segmented blade with a pick-like protrusion on each segment. The segments are connected by a stretchable thread, making Zabimaru more useful as a whip than an actual sword, though it can serve as a regular sword just as easily. While Zabimaru can be stretched to incredible lengths in its whip form, Renji has a limit of three consecutive attacks before having to bring the segments of Zabimaru back together for recovery. Renji can also use his chakra to separate the segments and surround an opponent with them, allowing him to execute a one-shot omnidirectional attack called Higa Zekkō (Broken Baboon's Fang), but it is damaging to Zabimaru and leaves Renji defenseless.

Zabimaru's bankai is Hihiō Zabimaru (Baboon King Snake Tail) and transforms Zabimaru into a massive version of its shikai form resembling a skeletal snake. Zabimaru gains many more segments, which are much larger than in its shikai form, and also gains a snake-like head about the size of a small car. Renji is also slightly transformed, gaining a fur cowl around his neck. Unlike its shikai, Zabimaru's segments are held together by Renji's chakra, allowing him to separate and reattach them at will. The segments themselves are extremely tough, making it extremely difficult to destroy Zabimaru. Even if a segment is damaged, Renji can simply detach it and reform Zabimaru. Zabimaru itself, in bankai form, does not literally "cut", Renji usually catches his opponent with the snake-head of his weapon and smashes his opponent into the ground with it. The head has also proven capable of inflicting heavy damage through biting. Zabimaru also gains a special technique known as Hikōtsu Taihō (Baboon Bone Cannon) after Renji becomes more adept with using his bankai. The technique fires a dense blast of spiritual energy from Zabimaru's mouth. He can also use a much more powerful higa zekkō, where all the segments detach and sharpen using spiritual energy.

Tobiume (Flying Plum Tree): Momo Hinamori's blade

The command for Tobiume's shikai is snap. When its shikai is activated, Tobiume's blade straightens and produces several jitte-like prongs along its length. In this form, Tobiume acts as a focus for Hinamori's chakra, concentrating it into energy bursts capable of cratering floors and breaching walls. Hinamori can also compress her power into massive energy balls and toss them from the blade's tip.

Wabisuke (Miserable Man): Izuru Kira's blade

Its shikai command is raise your head. When activated, Wabisuke's shikai bends the blade into a square hook. In this form, Wabisuke doubles the weight of whatever it strikes. The ability affects both inanimate objects and living beings. Though a seemingly pointless ability in sword combat, the effect is cumulative. With a second hit from Wabisuke, the weight will double again and so on, exponentially. Thus, after seven or eight blocked attacks, his opponents are unable to lift their own swords. Once Wabisuke's effect becomes noticeable, Kira's opponents often fall to their knees with their heads bent down, as if in apology, thus the name of Kira's zanpakutō.

Shinsō (Divine Spear): Gin Ichimaru's blade

Shinsō's shikai is triggered by the phrase shoot to kill. In its shikai, Shinsō's blade glows white and extends at high speed to impale Gin's opponents. In addition to making it a deadly long-range weapon, the extending blade also carries tremendous force without affecting Gin, making it useful for dislodging heavy objects. Once extended, Gin can maintain the blade's length and swing Shinsō in wide arcs, attacking multiple targets quickly and simultaneously.

Suzumebachi (Hornet): Soifon's blade

Suzumebachi's shikai is triggered by the command sting all enemies to death. In its shikai, Suzumebachi shrinks into a stinger that is worn on the middle finger of Soifon's right hand. When Soifon stabs someone with Suzumebachi, a butterfly symbol called a hornet's crest spreads from the point of contact, its abdomen acting as the center. If Soifon stabs the same location again, her opponent dies, regardless of how powerful they may be. The crests are maintained by Soifon's will and are impossible to remove unless she wills it. In the anime's Bount arc, Soifon explains that Suzumebachi's ability is caused by a type of venom it secretes, which also acts as a handy counter-poison as well; however, in using it this way, she must stab herself with her weapon, making her as susceptible to its original effect as her enemies.

Ryûjin Jakka (Flowing Flame Blade): Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryûsai's blade

Ryûjin Jakka's shikai command is reduce the whole of creation to smoldering ashes. It is the oldest and most powerful fire-based zanpakutô, and has greater attack power than all other zanpakutô in Soul Society.When released, Ryûjin Jakka and the area around Yamamoto is consumed in flame. The sheer power of the flame can disintegrate almost anything the sword is waved at.
