Oboe, a beatifull instrumet, why oboe is so dificult and awsome

OK the oboes have been insulted in the clarinet section on this website so this topic is to show how awsome us oboe players are and why we are one of the best instrumets in the band.

1. It is really hard to play our instrumet. We can get dizzy playing it because we take in so little air that we have to exhale and inhale during our breath while the other instruments just have to inhale.

2. Our instrument sounds cool. Not like a duck. It has a sound that no other instrument can match. The clarinets somtimes sound like flutes when they get in to the high register but none of the other instruments sound like the oboe or even resemble it in the slightest.

3. We have to mess with our reed all the time. We either are working on it or have to open it or have to let it soak in water before we warm up so that we dont break it. We also have to be more careful with our reeds then the clarinets or saxes because if our reed breaks, It costs about the same amount of a box of clarinet reeds.

^Ok,we know you love the oboe,but we all have our own opinion.IMO,oboe is much like the clarinet.Oboe is like,the distant cousin of the clarinet.It's not the same,but they are pretty much equal in the level of skill it takes to play and the level of practice to maintain it.

Ok the oboe looks like the clarinet but is really different to try to play it. The embasure is different. The notes are different. And the amount of air is different. You cant even tounge the same on the oboe as you tounge on the clarinet. I agree on the skill level and all but the oboe is completely different from the clarinet besides what it looks like.

Actually they are a lot alike.Every woodwind instrument is radically different,but the oboes have roughly the same part as the clarinet most of the time,and there is the fact that they use reeds,and there is the fact that they have more than three valves.

Also,if you think that oboes are so distant from clarinets,then stop trying to compare them.It is impossible to compare unrelated things.Just like you can't compare the quality of an apple to the quality of a grape.

Did you read the topic Dennis? its OBOE a beatifull instrument. If ther are any bassonists on the site They can write about their instrument in their topic. But this is a topic for the oboe.

Oboe is actually extremely different from clarinet. We have similar parts to the flutes, not clarinets. They sound nothing alike, they use different fingerings, and the music is in a different key. Oboe is also MUCH harder to play. Oboe/French Horn is considered the most difficult instrument, while clarinet is somewhere in the middle.

And we sound pretty.

I said that the oboe and the clarinet were different.But they still require the same skill level overall.And I can say that French Horn is just as hard as sax.When I switched to French Horn it was not much harder than sax,if at all.I think it's sort of impossible to say "this instrument is harder"or "This one is easier" because all of them require the same amount of concentration,practice,and time to learn.

maybe its just a bad experience from our honor band over here that makes me dread the oboe sound.
I love all instruments equally!

Im agreeing with oboequeen on this one. But I do have to say that the oboe can be really FRUSTRATING to play, especially after you break your first reed. And oboe is REALLY hard to play. trust me.

Well maybe it is,but so is playing with four mallets.Anyway,IMO oboe can't be any harder than any other instrument.If it was there would be no good oboists in the world.

Bando, try to play the oboe for a week or more and you will understand.

I've picked up an oboe before,and it isn't much harder than,say,trying to use adequate air playing a bari sax.I actually did pass out once from trying to do that.I never said it was easy.But you act as if you think that oboe is ten times harder than the other instruments.You've played clarinet for 4 years,so it's probably not that hard to get good tone.But you've been playing oboe for ,what ,a month?

Oboe is just not my instrument. Ive been playing it for a month and Im still not very good(i mean Im not as good as I should be, Ive been taking private lessons and I still struggle with a middle G). Plus I have a curse. I always break my reeds. It doesnt matter whether its clarinet or oboe. I will either break them or get the wrong quality of reeds so that the instrument is impossible to play and , if you do get a sound out of it, sounds like a duck.(trust me my oboe teacher even said that the reed i got sounded exactly like a duck)I just always have bad luck with reeds. So you see Bando, the oboe is acuallyt ten times harder for me to learn that any other instrument.

A month is not very long to play an instrument.Think back to Beginner band when you were learning clarinet.You were probably just as bad,but you didn't realize it cuz everyone else was bad too.GIve yourself more than a month.

I'll give myself until my scholorship money is used up to decide whether or not Im good at oboe. Thanks for the advice. Ive been comparing my oboe skills to much to my clarinet skills. Ive had six years to work on clarinet while I havent even been playing oboe for a year!!!

yea, that was what happened to me, and still does. i still think my bari skills are bad, but my teacher is always saying that my bari skills are better than my clarinet skills hands down...idk..but im really trying to pick up oboe before i graduate.

Well if you play clarinet and oboe you are going to have to choose between the two. I am giving up oboe because it interfears with the clarinet.
