Frightening though it sounds, albeit without all the dead goatherders or frightened royal kitties. (Or the abysmal UN resolution, the loophole-wanking, or Rono catching a flight to Arradan so he can get high off the fumes. Whatever.)

Taking her cues from fictitious psycho-regimes! Ain't America grand? laugh.gif

Well, in all honesty it's more a case of life imitating life, because I based my thing off Bhopal (which, thankfully, this NC thing seems much less severe than) - but when I read about it in the paper, and it described fire as spiking through the facility, I made the connection too - I swear it was almost the same words I used!

The Foley thing does seem to be a bit blown out of proportion, though.

Now, bizarrely, the person whose resolution I'm trying to repeal imitates me:

QUOTE
Emergency Powers Act
Category: International Security
Strength: Significant
Proposed by: We can not hear you

Description: Recognizes: That often governments can not often help people in times of disaster due to long bureaucratic processes that require a legislative body’s ruling.

Determining: That it would be ethical for the ruler of the country to bypass such measures in times of catastrophe.

Giving a country’s ruler emergency powers during a crisis would allow for decisions to be made much more quickly. This would reduce loss of human life during a large storm/ earthquake/ fire/ or war situation.
During these first three instances if the leader of the country or the legislative body of that country most follow this due process to grant emergency powers:
1.) The plea for Emergency powers must be made.
2.) An emergency meeting of the countries legislative body must be brought about to make a simple vote on whether the leader should be granted emergency powers.
2A.) A this vote must be passed by 90% of the representative body or the plea will be rejected. Also the president may refuse Emergency powers granted to him.
2B.) If a leader wants Emergency Powers but cannot obtain them he may make an appeal to the legislative body that will allow a revote if the leader can obtain a 51% approval from the legislative body.

During the time when a countries leader has emergency powers, the leader may make decision without the approval of the countries legislative body regarding ONLY to the current disaster at hand.
If the legislative body agrees by a 2/3 majority that the leader is abusing emergency powers than that leader will have his emergency powers revoked. If a serious infraction is made a U.N. hearing will begin and the countries next in command will rule until a hearing decision is made. If the leader is stripped of his leadership a democratic election will then begin as set by the country’s standards. If the leader is not stripped of his leadership he will return as leader to his country.
A leader may also give up Emergency powers when he/or she feels that they have successfully dealt with the current situation at hand

In conclusion: The Emergency Powers act will save much undue loss of human life if passed. Please think of the citizens, the welfare, and safety of YOUR NATION

Death cat?
Intuitive nursing-home cat predicts residents' deaths
By Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours.

His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

"He doesn't make too many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die," said Dr. David Dosa in an interview. He describes the phenomenon in a poignant essay in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Many family members take some solace from it. They appreciate the companionship that the cat provides for their dying loved one," said Dosa, a geriatrician and assistant professor of medicine at Brown University.

...And arentcha glad NSUN nations wouldn't have this kind of problem? (well, sort of):

Wisconsin court tosses assault charges against accused grave robbers
Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. - Three men who dug up a young woman's corpse to have sex with it after seeing her obituary photo cannot be charged with attempted sexual assault because Wisconsin has no law against necrophilia, an appeals court ruled Thursday.

A judge was correct to dismiss the charges against twin brothers Nicholas and Alexander Grunke and Dustin Radke, all 21, because lawmakers never intended to criminalize sex with a corpse, the District 4 Court of Appeals said in a 3-0 ruling.

At issue is a provision in the sexual assault law saying criminal penalties apply "whether a victim is dead or alive at the time of the sexual contact or sexual intercourse."

The appeals court said the law was ambiguous but the most reasonable interpretation was that it does not ban necrophilia. Instead, the court said, the law was meant to make sure prosecutors could bring sexual assault charges in rape-murder cases in which the victim ends up dead.

Sudden gravedig after nearly two years' peaceful repose...

Life imitates me, again.

(Although, admittedly, my story was itself an "imitation" of that lady who found Mary in a cheese sandwich. tongue2.gif)

Bit of a fat Jesus. And a very stubby head. And no legs.

I wonder if anyone's ever calculated the probability that, of the billions of snack products consumed each year, a few wouldn't sort of, if you squint a bit and use some imagination, resemble familiar figures.

Once I went out with a girl, that if you squinted real hard, looked like Bo Derek. smile.gif

QUOTE (billboard.com)
After weeks of controversy and uncertainty, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry is scheduled to sign an executive order tomorrow (April 28) that names the Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize??" as the official rock song of Oklahoma. Flaming Lips main man Wayne Coyne tells Billboard.com the entire experience has been at times exciting and disappointing, and in quintessential Lips fashion, always surreal.

This of course is a reminder of when Golgothastan's president named everything after that Icelandic band (what's its name?).

It's not a bad song, I'll admit; my money's on Michael Ivins knew what he was doing when he wore that hammer-and-sickle T-shirt in public. It's not like the band gets press for much else these days, and the opportunity to throw a few indulgent F-you's the Republicans' way only made it all the sweeter.

Weinermobile crashes into Wisconsin home

It doesn't mention the road-rage incident with a Mary Kay Cadillac, but you totally know that's what caused the crash!
