Title: Postal Service Standardization
Snefaldia - January 11, 2008 08:49 PM (GMT)
No, this has nothing to do with that silly little band. As is my habit, I come up with interesting proposals that might have practical use in real life but are either already implemented or useless in NS.
The idea I have in mind is standardization of mail service. I'm thinking standard mail headers, postage for everyone without having to buy pesky extra stamps or credits or things like that.
I know where to start; and that's with addresses. The problem I keep running into is that nations likely have different systems of municipal incorporation, making it difficult to create a unified address system. Postage is no issue.
Any thoughts before I churn out a draft and post it on Jolt?

I see no reason for international mandates on internal postal delivery. If you want to do this to help standardize international mail only, you might have something, but you'd still have category issues...

Yes, it was intended for international mail delivery; but I was pondering why it shouldn't affect all postal service. It would make everything easier, wouldn't it?

Wouldn't you make the argument that it would ease barriers to commerce? After all, standardization of mail means you don't have to worry about buying postage stamps from other places? Extra stamps would be a thing of the past after all...

Free Trade would be the one, because it "reduces barriers to trade and commerce."
I'm going to start on a draft this week.

But what about the philatelists. Won't someone please think of the philatelists?

Because internal mail is something that's none of the UN's business?

I don't really buy the NatSov line; we've already standardized weights and measures, so why not the post as well?

See, that's the thing. Internal weights and measures shouldn't have been standardized. Metric System constitutes the worst kind of meddling of which the NSUN is capable. International weights and measures, sure, I can see it, but there was no reason whatsoever to force all nations to convert internally. I equally see no reason why domestic mail need be monitored by an NSUN mandate. International post, yes, but domestic? No freakin' way.
:auss:
I couldn't even imagine Auss, the champion of international standardization, endorsing such unnecessary micromanagement.

This is one of those matters where it's not only a NatSov issue, but a "why should the UN bother with this?" issue. Standardize international mail? Sure, I could go along with that. But why does the UN need to regulate domestic mail?

Good points all; I'll restrict my focus to international mail.
