David vs David
The matchup we all expected is here at last. AI chose to use a theme tonight - a D vs D boxing match, complete with announcer and boxing analyst. They also provided a manager and a trainer - Clive Davis and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It was amusing enough but I was beginning to think they were taking up too much time to fit in all the performances (that IS what we're here for, isn't it?). And indeed, the show ran long - my DVR shut off before Ruben got halfway through his "Celebrate Me Home" (with which they ended the show, complete with video of the eliminated idols and others).
In the opening sequence, they panned the audience where the eliminated Idols from the Top 12 were seated together, and there was Jason Castro in the front row ------ yawning. Of course. LOLOL He did say he was a chronic yawner. Or maybe, as manipulative as this show is, they asked him to do that. ----- Nah. He was just yawnin'. Love ya JasCas! You're the coolest cat around. (See - "Memory" was a good choice for you after all!)
David Cook - Clive's pick for Cookie was "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2. This was a good song for him. Liked the song, liked him singing it. It wasn't a perfect vocal - there were a few minor gaffes in there - but he really sold the performance and that's key. Very nicely done. Good start to the night.
David Archuleta - Clive chose Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" for Archie. This is a great song, done many times times on Idol. Most notably, Clay Aiken sang the crap out of it in Season 2's Wild Card week and it made people sit up and take notice. Bo Bice also did a great version of the song in Season 4. And now, young David adds another fantastic version of this song. It was really good, and by the end it was phenomonal. I did think that Randy and Paula were a bit over-effusive in their praise - tone it down a tad, please! I wondered if they thought louder was better. Simon brought the hysteria down while delivering his praise as well. I thought David was going to pass out when Simon told him it was the best he had done all season.
In round 2, the Idols chose a song from the Top songs in the songwriting contest for the winner's song.
David C - "Dream Big" - DC picked up the electric guitar for this one. I am trying to critique without putting a lot of emphasis on the song itself, as I think that isn't really fair, but that's hard to do. This was OK - his vocals were good but it wasn't very exciting for an upbeat tune. I liked it better on the second listen than when I first heard it, but as a voter, I wouldn't have had the chance to hear it a second time and that can be a factor. I thought Simon had an interesting boxing analogy - he said it was lightweight. I would go more for middleweight.
David A - "In this Moment" - Again, not a great song but it was melodic and David sounded great. It had a very nice ending, and he was very connected to this song. He sang "Nothing can take this away from me", and while Simon seemed to think that meant he was saying no one could take the crown from him, I am quite sure he meant that no matter the outcome, his being in the finals is something that can't be taken away from him. I think he outdid DC in this round as well. I'm not sure DA can handle another round of praise, so now I almost hope he blows the last song so he won't collapse from hearing it.
Round 3 is contestant's choice.
David C chose "The World I Know" by Collective Soul. This was very nice vocally but I was surprised by the choice of song. I certainly don't fault him for choosing a new song per se, but this one just did not have any punch. I thought his last song should have been an attention grabber, and this wasn't. This was another performance that I liked better on the second listen, but since we vote after the first time, I was actually disappointed with this choice. As a rocker, he should have gone with an in-your-face, I'm-kicking-your-ass-Archuleta type song. Any other time, this song would be great. I told my friends at the time that he should have done "Billie Jean" again, with even more oomph, and he would have left a hugely positive impression on the voting public. Simon then said the same thing, citing either "Bille Jean" or "Hello". So - I wasn't alone.
David A chose to reprise "Imagine". This was a very smart choice. This song put him in the forefront from very early in the competition. And this night, he changed it up from the first time and it was even better. It was stunning. (Oh, crap - Paula said that too.) And -- he stayed on his feet after Simon told him it was a knockout.
David Archuleta absolutely came into the night with the desire to win and he laid it all out there. David Cook seemed to be coasting to me. He did, in fact, remark at the beginning of the night that in his opinion, the competition was over already. I didn't think he was in fighting form, and I don't think he has been for a few weeks now. In the end, David Archuleta did, in fact, have a knockout performance night. He did not rest on past good performances - he seriously brought it, and I would like to see him win. But at this point, a lot of minds are made up and the night's performances don't matter all that much. I do think that David Cook will win. But does it really matter? Bravo to them both.
And BTW - in an interview today, Simon was hedging on his "knockout" verdict for Archie, so this tells me that, in fact, David Cook has won. Because Simon will not be wrong. And he likely knows already who the winner is. Just sayin'.
