Wraith Squadron

user posted image

Wraith Squadron, also known as the Wraiths, was a hybrid New Republic starfighter/commando unit developed in 7.5 ABY by Wedge Antilles. The original Wraith Squadron was largely made up of wash-outs and misfits, which gave the unit a number of psychologically and emotionally unstable pilots, albeit experienced members of the military with useful commando skills. The Wraiths were designed to fulfill the mission responsibilities of both a traditional starfighter squadron and a commando unit—a revolutionary concept in tactics for the New Republic, and one that its founder felt was an essential development for the New Republic.

History

Following the conclusion of the Bacta War, wherein Rogue Squadron had undertaken an independent guerrilla war to overthrow Imperial Intelligence Director Ysanne Isard's regime on the world of Thyferra, Wedge Antilles and Rogue Squadron returned to Coruscant and New Republic Defense Force service, with each member of the squadron reinstated to their former positions. However, Antilles' experiences in both the Battle of Coruscant and the Battle of Thyferra had impressed upon him the need of a new starfighter unit with different tactics. In a meeting with Admiral Ackbar scheduled by Antilles, the veteran starfighter pilot outlined his idea for a new type of unit: a squadron that would be equally adept at commando-type missions on the ground as well as starfighter missions in space. Antilles wanted the pilots in the new unit to have a full range of intrusion and subversion skills, as well as the equipment needed to pull off planetside missions rather than having to call in another unit to deal with a problem on the ground. Antilles also hoped that the commando/pilot squadron would formulate new tactics and methods for conducting military operations, providing what he saw as a necessary tactical innovation for the New Republic military.

The Wraiths first saw action against Admiral Apwar Trigit, which resulted in the destruction of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Implacable and the death of Trigit following a prolonged campaign that started with the Wraiths' seizure of the modified Corellian corvette Night Caller. Following Trigit's demise in the Battle of Ession, they continued to mount a number of often unorthodox covert operations against Warlord Zsinj. At one point, members of Wraith Squadron posed as a pirate group in an attempt to become employed by Zsinj. They were successful in that aim, which allowed them to assist in the destruction of the Executor-class Star Dreadnought Razor's Kiss. During this time, Garik Loran assumed command of Wraith Squadron from Wedge Antilles. Afterward, they returned to more normal fleet service in a lengthy campaign against Zsinj, culminating in the Battle of Selaggis, an engagement made possible by a double agent from Wraith Squadron who was stationed aboard Zsinj's flagship, the Iron Fist. At Selaggis, the Wraiths helped scatter Zsinj's forces, believing they had destroyed the Iron Fist and largely defeated Zsinj himself.

Their success was such that the unit was then moved from Starfighter Command to the New Republic Intelligence Service. Wraith Squadron continued to play a vital, if unique role in the military into the Yuuzhan Vong War, during which its members jammed yammosk war coordinators, flew covert missions behind enemy lines, crafted a psychological campaign by helping Jaina Solo impersonate a Yuuzhan Vong deity, and infiltrated Coruscant. After the New Republic government transitioned into the Galactic Alliance, the Wraiths served the reformed government through the Swarm War.

After the Swarm War, and the decades that followed the Wraith Squadron began to fall by the wayside. The pilots weren't as good, the soldiers not as unstable, the Wraith Squadron began to operate as a normal squadron. It was deemed by the Head of State in 82 ABY to be an unnecessary unit, and Wraith Squadron was disbanded. It was of no matter anyway, they had lost touch with what made them the Wraiths.

However, after the Sith-Imperial War, General Ramis Markham of the Galactic Alliance Remnant began to see that the GAR needed something more than it's typical soldiers, more than it's typical pilots. It too had lost sight of what had made it possible. He spent many years researching and lobbying to have this new unit re-instated, but the GAR had neither the time nor the manpower to allocate to the formation of the Wraiths.

In 138 ABY, General Ramis Markham became the leader of the GAR. One of his first acts was to reform Wraith Squadron, a collection of pilots with commando skills who could do all the dirty work that the Alliance needed. Neither NAVY, nor ARMY, their only superior officer was General Markham.

Organization:

The Wraith Squadron was always lead by one Commander who was dubbed "Wraith 1" and an Executive Aid who was usually of a Lieutenant rank. Most others within the Squadron were Flight Officers, although this was usually not due to being a rookie in terms of skill, but rather being attributed to some sort of black mark on the pilot's record. At most there were only 13 Wraiths, some times less.

In addition to the standard rank and file of a squadron, each Wraith also had the skills of a Commando and a specialty for planetside missions. These specialties were as follows:

- Medic
- Demolitions
- Impersonation
- Sniper
- Slicer
- Infiltration
- Vehicle (non-starfighter) Pilot
- Tactician
- Unarmed Combatant
- Communications Specialist

What Does it Take to become a Wraith?

To become a Wraith, you need two very vital things, guts and loyalty.

You need to have guts because you will be doing all of the things that the rest of the Alliance refuses to do, you will be doing the dirty work sometimes, and you will almost always be doing the most dangerous missions that the Alliance has to offer. Its a thankless job, and much of what you do will be blacked out when it comes to official documents until far after the time of glory has passed. The Wraiths are not meant to be the heroes everyone admires, they are not Rogue Squadron, they are the unit that gets the job done regardless of the odds. You need to have the guts to survive the odds and to look at death in the face many times before the day is over to serve with the Wraiths.

You need loyalty, loyalty to the Alliance, loyalty to your comrades and loyalty to yourself. Never let the enemy bend your will, or tell you that you are anything other than the greatest of soldiers. If you're a Wraith, you are. The Alliance is trusting you with its greatest needs, its greatest risks, you need to be loyal to that Alliance and complete your mission for the sake of millions of citizens. You need to be loyal to your comrades, men and women who are your second family and when it comes down to the wire have your back when no one else does. You rely on them to protect your life, just as they rely on you to protect theirs.

There is one more thing you need to be to be a Wraith, a badass.

The Application Process to become a Wraith:

You must have an approved profile within the Galactic Alliance or Jedi to apply for anything that has to do with the Wraiths. With that being said, you cannot actually submit a profile to be instantly approved into Wraith Squadron. Should you wish to design a character for Wraith Squadron, or get an existing character into Wraith Squadron lead on.

All Wraith Squadron members must be approved of by Wraith Leader, Arden Markham, before they are admitted into Wraith Squadron. So you must fill out a form and PM it to him. This is a link to his profile, here.

This is the form to PM him:

CODE
[b]Application for Wraith Squadron[/b]
[i]Character Name:[/i] (Input name here)
[i]Age:[/i]
[i]Species:[/i]
[i]Gender:[/i]
[i]Profile:[/i] Put a link to your profile here if it already exists, if not just state that you are creating a character for Wraith Squadron
[i]Specialty[/i] Choose one off the list a few posts above, if a specialty has been taken it will [i]italicized[/i] on that list.
[i]Why you think you would be a good part of Wraith Squadron:[/i] Include a few paragraphs about your character, their strengths/weaknesses, brief history, personality profile.

If Zakkeg approves of your character or not, he will let you know. From there you will have to set up an RP with him, where he recruits you into Wraith Squadron. This is just a formality but it gets character development between the unit started and begins some cohesion.
